I thought they looked like maraschino cherries to me. I also don't think Jack's hands were injured, Naughty. He wrapped his hands because he was about to slide down the rope. The significance I can see is that Jack wrapped his hands, Locke didn't (hence, Locke was bloodied, Jack wasn't).

1.) Walt appeared when Shannon heard whispers. If the Others manifest on demand, it may mean that Shannon heard whispers because she happened to be in the area the Others were passing through with Walt. 2.) The dome was a geodesic dome, and coated in what looked to be algae. Not sure if that's a connection to the biosphere experiments in the 60s, but here's info on what the Soviets did in the 1960s (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BIOS-3).

3.) Probably fairly obvious, but the quarantine notice was on the inside of the hatch. This tells me that it was warning the people inside the hatch to avoid whatever was outside, not the other way around.

Well, then you may like my wild theory of the week, which I'll just throw out there... The Others may end up finding out that Walt is not quite as special without Vincent, so whatever they kidnapped him for, they need Vincent too, and that may get them into trouble.

yeah im not quite sure what i sw, i was just note taking as fast as possible. what I THOUGHT i saw was blood on Jacks hands (significant allusion) then he wrapped them to use the cable. i couldnt tell if the blood was from his hand, or it was Locke's and when jack first touched the cable, got it on him and then wrapped them.

guess i'll see later when i watch it again.

Sorry, I haven't read through all of these yet, just wanted to give my list of observations before work.

Start w/ a guy, first impression is a flashback of Sawyer, find out later it is Desmond, thought it might be Alex for awhile. He's exercising and eating a protein shake, takes steroids or medicine? Song playing "Make your own kind of Music" by Karen Carpenter.

Flashback scene - Jake meets Sarah after her accident. Makes a choice, she lives, other driver dies.

Charlies and Sayid are back at the caves again. Shannon is looking for Vincent, he got loose.

Kate looks at back of door. "Quarantine"

Shannon goes into the woods to look for Vincent. She sees Walt all wet. He is wispering.

Find out another fact about Hurley to add to his bad luck. The Chicken place where he worked was hit by a meteorite. We also know for sure that he was a patient in the mental hospital.

Wow, even though I read the summaries from Hawaii I was blown away.

The quarantine sign shown in the ep. is black letters on white background, the one in the promos is white letters on red background, why 2 different signs?

I think we have found the source of the compass malfunction, some powerful magnet in the hatch tunnel that yanked at Jack's Halliburton key.

There is a globe in Jack's office at the hospital, you see it behind (that jerk) Kevin's head when they are talking about Sarah's operation.

Teresa falls up the stairs, and so did Jack at the stadium.

Desmond says he's training for "a race around the world", Jack is doing a tour de stat (?) running the stairs around the stadium, and there is a globe in his office. It will come back around. Running shoes in the hatch tunnel.

Desmond didn't know they were about to blow the hatch, he was caught off guard. If he's been spying on them he's been doing a lousy job. Also he seemed to be starting his day, with artificial light. So he is awake at night.

When Shannon sees Walt he's wearing a black shirt with a white stripe on it. This is a negative image of the shirt he was wearing when he was abducted which is beige with a black stripe.

Desmond has electricity, running water, fresh air, fresh fruit.

In the hatch there is more than one bunk, several overalls, multiple guns. This place was set up for more than one person to live in. Yet the mirrors looking down the tunnels and the periscope, or whatever that was suggests a security/monitoring system that would allow one person to keep an eye on several tunnels from one location.

There is an octagonal or hexagonal(?) symbol on the red cabinet that Desmond opens to get a vial of the yellow stuff he shoots in his arm. You see it again on a wall or column when he's panning around to look at the mirrors. He has a logo with a similar, but not a match, shape on his shirt in the stadium.

Jack drank from Desmond's water bottle. Sarah thought he smelled even though he'd taken a shower.

Jack's bedside manner does suck! Would you tell a patient you were out running up stairs for the hell of it right before you tell her she's going to be paralyzed ?!

Add Shannon to the list of people who have heard whispers and had visions/hallucinations on the island.

Desmond is a "hunt and peck typist", did anyone figure out how many and what keys he typed on the computer in the opening scene?

There were books or magazines on the table in Desmond's breakfast nook. Lots of record albums.

The computers, record player, lava lamp, music would lead you to believe the hatch habitat was provisioned in the early 70's perhaps (I'm sure much discussion will go into exactly when) but the flashback in the stadium could not have been anywhere near that long ago. So when was it built/provisioned and when did Desmond take up residence?

Edit: Jack's conversation with Desmond in the stadium is similar to the one he has with Locke in White Rabbit. Jack is afraid of failing and the other person asks him to consider that something beyond his logic might be real. (hallucination of his father and a miracle cure for Sarah) In both cases Jack ends up succeeding despite his lack of faith.

Yeah, I was kind of guessing on the time by the position of the hands on the clock, 2:30 makes sense with the hands reversed from what I thought they were. I'll rely on you guys with HD to sort it out. The one time that is clear is when Adam Rutherford is pronounced dead at 8:15am.

Screencaps, where should we start? I've seen some in other threads of the octagonal logo on the red cabinet where the vials are kept, but that logo is also seen on at least 2 walls or columns when Desmond is using the scope thing to look at the mirrors. Its also on his jumpsuit and on the side of the computer screen. He also has an interesting logo on his shirt at the stadium that I saw a blow up of, looks like a phoenix in a pentagon.

I wondered what the books were on his breakfast table. Anything from the interior of the hatch will be interesting. All his consoles with switches.

Somebody mentioned sometime last week after the Hawaii premiere that the opening sequence reminded them of American Psycho.

Edit: another thing I just thought of. Jack pulling the piece of steering column out of Sarah's chest, like he pulled the shrapnel out of the marshal's chest.

You can see the logo on Desmond's shirt pretty clearly in this shot.

Yeah, let's talk about that....It's a Feng Shui symbol, but the Yin Yang symbol should be black and white. This one is only black. BTW, the octagonal shape reminds me of the place where Michael was standing in Brian's house where the ceiling was in 8 sections.

Interesting observation about Brian's house. The symbol also reminds me of the South Korean flag. I'm trying to find a website reference, but I know I've seen octagonal symbols similar to this tacked above doorways in Asian neighborhoods. Probably the Feng Shui thing. I think it would be really interesting if this somehow ties in to Sun, perhaps her father's company.

Somebody get Sun into the hatch to see this symbol and Sayid to hack the computer system!

I had gone back and re-watched the beginning and wow they did reverse the film, I wonder why? I know they are aware that we pick apart the show and that was a deliberate reversal. Someone in editing actually had to reverse the digital film, it's not like they are still running film and made a mistake by putting the film in backwards! I was trying to make a map of the bunker and this just causes all sorts of problems.:frown:

At the very beginning, when Desmond gets out of bed, he appears to be sleeping on the top bunk of bunkbeds. Makes me wonder if there's someone else down there with him.

Desmonds shirt symbol is the coat of arms of the the Scottish clan of Dunlop (Dunlap, in some instances).

That introduces both chinese philosophy and medieval heraldry/chivalry into Lost.

Well seems Desmond is a Dunlop. You dont see people using crests unless they are associated to it.
Then u can assume he is wealthy, as The Dunlop's family own two major businesses:
Tires, and Sports gear, especially golf, and host several famous...u heard it Golf Tournaments.

A few thoughts and observations.

I haven't seen anyone mention the diner like booth in the eating area of the hatch, it looks like it would seat at least four. Also most of the hatch seems to be painted red.

it looks to me like the the symbol on the wall, where the yinyang would be in the chinese bagua, is instead a globe. like the sillouhette of the continents on a globe. this would go along with Desmond's comment about getting ready for a (what was it, race? trip?) around the world. It's the 8 bagua's around the world, literally.

The washer and dryer in Desmond's hatch look brand new while most others look to be 70's or 80's era. His computer reminded me alot of the commodore 64, which was one of the first home computers in the early 80's.

Desmond injected himself with one of those guns you see used alot for innoculations or antidotes in movies, particularly ones involving the military or government science experiments. I don't know if those are like that in real life, but I think that would go along with the quarantine sign posted on the inside of the hatch.

There were a bunch of bottles of paint by the wall with the graffiti on it, inside the hatch.

Shannon's father is named Adam, like the Adam and Eve in the cave. Are they hinting at something about who she is and her importance much the way that Jack, who so far doesn't believe, is the son of a Christian Shepard?

I think that Walt appeared to or was calling to Vincent, who went to see him, and when Shannon and Sayid came looking for him, he was trying to lead them to Walt. To me the whispers seemed to be coming from outside Walt. It seemed Walt was trying to speak but he couldn't make sound, and was drowned out by the whispers.

I gave up myself on trying to figure out what Walt was saying. It reminded me of the whispers at first. Drove us insane.

i think desmond's apt is surrounded by light emitting area to keep his circadian rhythm going correctly with the UV sun he needs being down in the basement.

This may just be me overthinking Lost a bit much, but I was thinking about Jack's father telling Jack that people need to be provided hope in this episode. This was also the same thing Locke said was in the hatch.

Jack told his father that he would not provide false hope to people, and when he opened the hatch, he stayed true to that... he didn't go back and tell the survivors that everything would be OK in the hatch. He started by first telling them that Plan A didn't work, and all they need to do is survive for 3 hours... not exactly my idea of a pep talk.

Before the crash, however, Jack later met Desmond, and while it was a strange encounter, Desmond was telling Jack that HE needed to be hopeful, that he needed to wake up to the miracles and wonder in the world around him (at least indirectly). When Jack went to see Sara, he got a first-hand lesson in the need to be hopeful and amazed at the world around him.

Now, on the island, Jack has once again given into his dour personality, ignoring the wonder and mystery around. But, in the hatch, he has once again met Desmond, who, despite holding a gun to Locke's head, is a significant reminder for Jack. Might even help Jack get over the petulance that could potentially harm the survivors in the long term?

Perhaps, Locke was right... perhaps hope WAS in the hatch after all.

Sayid also didn't want to take away people's hope in the pilot episode, after they heard the transmission, he didn't want to tell everyone the transmission had been playing for 16 years and one rescue had come.

In the Stadium the scetion Jack is running up to is GG (Greater Good?)

Perhaps, Locke was right... perhaps hope WAS in the hatch after all.

Yeah, exactly. He corrected himself because (and I'm sure this will occur in the episode) it will be pointed out that it is a meteorite and not a meteor. Meteors never strike the earth since they become meteorites at that point.

Sort of like how you can never find uncanned Sardines - they aren't sardines until they are in a can.
