I actually screamed when I opened up Calculator earlier and added those numbers up.
Kristin1617 09-22-2005, 01:36 AM This is what I've found so far (notice the word Jin????):
One of the scriptures of Buddhism, “Hannya Shinkyo” describes “When the six aspects of kon 「根」 (eye「眼」, ear「耳」, nose「鼻」, tongue「舌」, body「身」 and spirit「意」) touch the six aspects of jin 「塵」 (color「色」, voice 「声」, smell「香」, taste「味」, touch「触」and justice「法」), the six kon create three worldly desires of good 「好」, bad 「悪」 and peace「平」, and become eighteen worldly desires, which is Sepai. Then another three worldly desires; pain「苦」, pleasure 「楽」and abandonment 「捨」touch the six kon to make another eighteen worldly desires, which added up to thirty-six (Sanseiru). These thirty-six worldly desires are related to the past, present and future, and then it becomes one hundred and eight (36 x 3), which is Suparinpei. In Japan , we have the tradition of hitting big bells in temples 108 times on New Years Eve, which is supposed to get rid of our 108 worldly desires and to remind us of Buddha’s spirit for all the people.
Kristin1617 09-22-2005, 01:39 AM And from another site:
The sounds of temple bells, which ring one hundred and eight times at each temple at the turn of a year, are supposed to renounce one hundred and eight worldly desires in our minds. When our worldly desires disappear, we can greet a new year.
The worldly desires are separated into six classifications: visual, auditory, olfactory, gustatory, tactile and emotional. Each classification of desire is divided into three sub-classifications: lust, mediocrity and vice. Each of these three sub-classifications are further divided into two aspects: infection and purification. Last of all, each divided element is composed three timeframes: past, present and future. This brings the total variation of desire counts up to one hundred and eight. (6 × 3 × 2 × 3). People in old times made a pun playing with the number 108. (The number 108 is also made up from 4(Shi) × 9(Ku) × 8(Ha) × 9(Ku), which are continuously pronounced "Shi-Ku-Hakku"in Japanese. When put into Chinese letters,"Shi-Ku-Hakku" homonymouly means being in troubles and hardships. Therefore, 108 worldly desires are considered to be 108 sufferings.)

Right when I saw 108 on the wall, I knew it was the numbers added up. Perhaps 108 is THE cursed number...And all the other numbers are just brought together, to the island, to form the actual horrid number...108.
I saw this on this page discussing the number 108 and Buddhism (http://www.luckymojo.com/buddhawalnut.html), I found this particular line interesting:
"Among some sects of Buddhism, there are said to be 108 human beings who could have achieved nirvana or buddhahood, but have chosen to reincarnate on Earth to serve suffering humanity."

All Buddhist malas are 108 beads, not just Shoshu. (Though sometimes they have "spacer" beads, but they don't count.)
