I'm betting that she is elsewhere in the hatch.....maybe even hiding. I don't think Desmond knew she was there.

She did disappear. Maybe he has her tied up since he's got the gun on Locke? Maybe she's hiding and he didn't get her? Or maybe she's in on it?

Watch the episode with closed captionings. When the music turns on, the captioning says that Kate is screaming for Jack.

I was watching with closed captioning, and I'm not sure it was Kate screaming for Jack. I think it may have been Locke trying to get his attention over the music. My closed captioning didn't say who was screaming.

i totally thougth he grabbed her...first the rope got tight and it had pulling (which i took to be someone grabbing her) the it got loose(he got her)... but i think that when locke came down he found kate and that she wasnt dead so when jack came down he said she was ok

He did say that she was ok. You also have to remember he belives in fate. He might not know that for sure.

I just got the feeling that when he said she was ok that he had seen her and knew that she was.

okee ... it was kinda of fast, but this is what I saw:

Jack looks around the corner and sees Kate lying on the floor unconscious, he goes over to her, checks her out ... I think he says something like "You'll be okay" (not positive, though) ... it cuts to the burning raft where Sawyer pulls up Micheal and does CPR, then back to the hatch where Locke and Jack are tending to Kate ... Kate is waking up, looks kind of confused, then she says "behind you" and they turn around and Desi is lurking over them with his rifle ... then Desi says something like "are you the man.." dunno if he's speaking to Locke or Jack, though ...

I too watched with closed captioning and at an elevated volume...it was Kate yelling for Jack, otherwise it was a bit "screamy" to be Locke.

My first thought- Desmond, single guy, has been living by himself in this little private dungeon when in drops a female- and a pretty one at that! Of course he grabbed her! Even if he weren't a lecherous type of guy it would have been like Christmas for the Lonely Man!

Um... yeah but she came from the "quarantined" island... he obviously sees them as threats as he got into his arsenal prior to checking out the situation.
