Did everyone notice when Jack bent over to look closer at a part of the wall and there was a humming sound and his key started to lift up and move towards the wall. Thats a pretty strong magnet, what would that be for? Locke said his compass didn't work anymore and Sayid was having trouble with his (?)

Might have something to do with it. Also I keep thinking about the oceanicflight815.com reference to "magnetic" north.

I noticed that. Not sure what a magnet would be doing there, unless it has to do with the "security system"

Yep, totally saw that. If there was a strong magnet on the island, it would definitely explain why the compass wouldn't work.

Speculated days ago that there was an EMP field.
Here's a post with a link to what I said.

Could the "security system" somehow be focused sound waves? hmm

Could the magnet with the key be what is attracting or pulling in the airplane and Danielle's ship? If it gets to close it is sucked in be "The Island".

Seems likely, but it begs the question of why? To what end? (Mind you, I don't have answers, just the questions!) I agree, by the way. ;)

i think that it is a magnet and that would explain the compass but what i dont know is why is there..... i htink that is the big question

That would explain the metal, but not the Black Rock.

Maybe the magnets generate energy somehow that powers the inside of the hatch?

Maybe the magnet has something to do with the fact that Locke can now walk. I don't know the science behind that, but it was just a thought that came to me in addition to all the above theories.

I think that magnet is a big part of the answer to some of our questions.

Is it used for energy to power the island and hatch? A weapon that destroyed the Oceanic airliner? As a cure for ailments (Locke)?

I have allways been a fan of steam power for the security system...maybe the magnet plays a part in this?!?

Electro magnetism I believe is used in military bunkers because it has some effect on bacteria and viruses... Could be connected to the quarantine written on the bunker.

That would explain the metal, but not the Black Rock.

It was a mining ship. People have speculated that they were mining on the Island but I think it is now more obvious that it was mining elsewhere and carrying its payload back to wherever when it got caught in the Island's magnetic field, probably during a storm. With whatever ore it may have been carrying it was sure to been very "attracted to the Island."
