View Full Version : Desmonds Possible Origin (SPOILERS!)
Quiksilver13oi 09-22-2005, 02:36 AM did anyone else think Desmond could have came from
the beachcraft? i mean he does have an Irish accent. Irish people can normally be associated with Catholicism and we don't know too much about Desmond yet so he could be a drug dealer.
just a thought
Mr.James 09-22-2005, 02:39 AM I myself would doubt it, pretty sure that the guy from "OZ" has something to do with that plane. Desmond looks like he knows what hes doing there, like hes there for a reason. not like he happend to crash land on this island.
ScaredofPolarBears 09-22-2005, 02:41 AM he seemed to have more of an australian accent rather than an irish one.
ilgandy 09-22-2005, 02:50 AM It seemed more scottish. I mean this is kind of a loose comparison, but in the movie Rushmore there is a scottish guy who says "brother" all the time and Desmond called Jack "Brother". So yeah, its not like Scottish people are the only ones who say brother, but thats what it reminded me of.
Nacho 09-22-2005, 02:59 AM i thought it was an australian accent. i know because when i heard it i thought that the flash back was in australia... then i realized that was a stupid thought
ilgandy 09-22-2005, 03:03 AM Desmond could be part of some kind of experimental group of psuedo doctors from australia. Perhaps thats why the plane that went down was from australia.
JohnQPublic 09-22-2005, 03:21 AM Desmond.
Anagram for Edmonds.
Also for Odd Mens (or Odds Men).
That's all I got name wise.
shanzy288 09-22-2005, 03:25 AM Are we sure Desmond's name ends with a "D"? If not and his name is Desmon, scrambled up it spells Demons.
Balguro 09-22-2005, 10:41 AM Are we sure Desmond's name ends with a "D"? If not and his name is Desmon, scrambled up it spells Demons.
That's what I was thinking...
Peach 09-22-2005, 06:48 PM His accent sounded Scottish to me-- in fact, he reminded me of Billy Boyd (so if Charlie shoots him, how ironic would that be?!?! However, I thought he said "mate" once and I thought that was an Australian phrase.
it's a Scottish accent. It sounds nothing like an Australian accent. >.>
mikec12321 09-22-2005, 07:20 PM no clue on what kind of accent it is, sounds like it could be from any where that people posted, but i dont think thats very important. but when desmon(d) was training in the stadium and jack hurt his ankle, he told jack that you need to elevate his leg, maybe he was some kind of scientist or doctor. and he also was talking about miracles with jack, and how they can happen, and right after that the lady miraculausly was not paralized and could move her legs,. these are just thoughts tho.
and my thoughts on desmond, he definitly doesnt seem like a bad type of person, i can definitly see him siding with the plane crash survivors, i mean take a look at his shelter, the hatch door was extremly well built and protected and took 3 sticks of dynamite to blow thru. after that u see inside his shelter, he has crazy video cameras and devices all over to see thngs, and an arsenal of guns, hes definitly got a good defense built up to protect him from "something" the others maybe?
2 more things
1. did any1 see in the begining desmond injected himself with some kind of medicne or drug? any1 know what it was or have ideas on it? im thinking maybe an antidote, reason being the crate said quarantine on it which means restraint on a person for having a disease.
2. and did any1 notice things in his home, they were very modern, if you saw it, the camera passed by a washing machine and a dryer, and they wernt old at all.they were a light gray or black and had that circular space shuttle look and looked like a brand new kind, kind of like the ones in my house that my parents got like 2 years ago, except these looked even newer, so ifi m right thgat might mean desmond hasnt been here very long.. but idk just a thought
CusickFan1 09-22-2005, 07:26 PM Desmond is indeed a Scottish character, accent and all. And that info comes directly from actor Henry Ian Cusick himself, and he should know. lol
btw, I'm his official site webmaster. (Hi!)
And, before anyone asks, no, I don't know anything other than he's a recurring character. Drop by his web site to learn more about Henry ... henryiancusick.com. :)
flora 09-23-2005, 02:38 PM My guess was either southern Scotland or northern England...glad to know someone's done their homework to clear that random bit of trivial bewilderment in my mind. Good job, CusickFan1.

And he takes the shots to keep him human. I think I've been watching too much sci-fi stuff.

I'm certain it wasn't a random bit of trivia that Desmond is Scottish. When they cast these parts, they look for very specific types. At this point I obviously have no clue as to why his being Scottish is significant, but I'm very confident that it will turn out to be significant.
My guess at this point is to show that this DHARMA organization is an international group, drawing its members from all over the world.
granulated 09-26-2005, 11:17 AM The accent is DEFINATELY Scottish.
Why is it that Americans are generally terrible at recognising accents !?

Nice to meet you, CusickFan!!!
I had a hard time placing his accent and I was engaged to a Scot and visited Scotland many times to stay with friends! I don't know, something just sounded a bit off about his accent. I actually thought he might be a Scot who had lived in the States awhile because he spoke much slower and drew out his words. The language over there is rapid fire and sometimes you wonder if it's even english! LOL! ;) It's much much harder for the average American to understand.
Hmmm, I wonder if it's a mix of Scottish and South African? I had a British friend who grew up in South Africa that sounded a lot like that. The language had kind of an "uptilt" to it - very friendly sound. Her speech reflected UK style but also African influences like Afrikaans. And saying "brotha" would fit right in with her type of speech.
Meh, just rambling!
soopafresh 09-26-2005, 11:31 AM The vowels give it away, and the vocal inflections. Desmond has that sing-songy Liverpudlian/Southern Scotland dialect.
Compare that to Claire (an Aussie) who prounounces words like - "Blake Smoke" or "She took my bye bye !"

Maybe because we don't hear them all that often. I think it would be the same as asking you to discern between a Minnesota accent and one from aother part of the midwest (say Kansas). Or Texas versus Alabama. Or Boston vs. NewYork. If you hear them all the time you can recognise them, if not its all Latin.
The accent is DEFINATELY Scottish.
Why is it that Americans are generally terrible at recognising accents !?
There was a study done a few years back, and something like only one out of every five people from the U.S. have actually been to another country. When you're surrounded by nothing but your own accent, you tend to focus only on it.
I've got some mates from Manchester that always get asked if they're Scots when stateside. On the other hand I've got a few mates from Belfast who swore Desmond was an Irishman. It's all relative. If the actor says he's a Scot, I'll go with that.
