In the beginning there was an eye. Jack's eye to be exact. Since the first episode many an episode has begun with the close up of one of the cast away's eye, usually signifying that it is that person's flashback episode. Yet not every character's eye has received a close up, for instance our leading lady Kate has had three flashback episodes with not one of them focusing in on one of her beautiful eyes. Sayid, Charlie, Hurley, Michael; as of yet neither of these four have had an eye close up either.

Since almost everything on this show has some meaning behind it, I am going to assume there is something here as well.

Could it be that the people whose episode began with their eye are the ones who are or will ultimately be infected with whatever makes the people sick on the island? Keep in mind also that Sayid hasn't had an eye close up and Danielle (the "French Woman") some how seemed to know he wasn't "sick".

Eye M Sick indeed.

That's weird. Interesting, but weird.

Was that Jack's eye in the beginning or Desmond's? I thought it was Desmond's...

It was Desmond's eye for the season 2 premiere. Jack's eye opened up the very first episode of Lost.

I didn't think about that, but I don't think the theory holds up too well since it seems to be only those two. Though there is some reason someone would make it coded like that instead of simply putting "I am sick". The only think I can think of is that the writer on the wall had a lack of education or the sickness somehow affected his brain.

If I recall correctly (I swear I say that in every thread), In season 1 it was Jack's right eye, and Season 2 is Desmond's left eye. Perhaps this is saying that Desmond is Jack's opposite, or their just really similar, like maybe Desmond was a leader figure in a group that ended up there previously. Anyway, thats just a theory but I definitely admit there is some kind of connection between Jack and Desmond whether it be something simple like they are both infected.

This makes a lot of sense. The eye opening scenes have to mean something, and so far we haven't figured anything out for them, other than who's eyes they are, but no significance.

How can you see sickness in the eyes, and what would cause it to show there?

Great theory!

Actually let me clarify. There has been more than just Jack and Desmond's eye shown at the beginning of an episode.

Here is a list of all the people who have had that infamous eye shot; Jack, Locke, Sun, Claire, Boone, Jin, Sawyer (as a kid), Claire's baby, and now Desmond.

Kate, Sayid, Charlie, Hurley, and Michael all had flashback episodes as well, but theirs never had the eye shot as of yet.

Shannon and Walt still haven't had a flashback episode so they are up in the air.

There is something to this I know it.

Maybe the eye is a metaphor for looking deeper into something or someone...
Maybe the reason we don't see Eyes for Kate, Sayid, Charlie, Hurley and Micheal is because he haven't looked deep enough into them yet?

I always thought the eye was meant to signify that we would seeing things from that person's perspective, via their flashbacks. Think about how differently the scene in Sun and Jin's bathroom can be interpreted when viewed from their two perspectives.

Yes, sickness can be seen in the eyes. If the whites are yellowed that is a sign of jaundice, or other illnesses, for example.

Speaking of eyes, doesn't Desmond's eye seem a bit red and irritated - his eye really is sick

I have no idea if this has ever been mentioned or it's just my crazy mind, but there was an episode where they showed the Oceanic Airline symbol, and I swear it looked like an 'artistic rendition' of an eye. I believe that the episode was Hurley's number episode. Just thought I'd throw it out and see what everyone thought....

I remember seeing some threads about eyes a while back. Someone mentioned that they thought Ethan might have the sickness. They posted images of him from after he became violent and the whites of his eyes had a kind of blueish tint or blueish veins in them. Pretty weird, considering how many episodes open with an eye opening, and the eye on the painting in this episode, and the way the Oceanic symbol looks like an eye.

YES - it was Michael's eye shown in that flashback episode.
He has a small dark dot next to his pupil and it shows very clearly in that eye sequence.

Interesting, isn't it, that Walt, who I believe knows more about what is happening or what will happen than anyone else, hasn't had his eye shot... Perhaps because he doesn't need to open his eyes or have them opened because his already are.
