bacolvin705 09-22-2005, 09:54 AM Why would Charlie say to Shannon, "There are no others" when he himself was captured by one of them?????
Why did Shannon say that looking after Vincent was the only thing anyone ever asked her to do. Sayid asked her to help him translate the French stuff on the papers he took from the Danielle.
Quiksilver13oi 09-22-2005, 08:44 PM 1. Charlie was kidnapped by Ethan. Ethan isn't neccessarily an other or any of those pirate wishperers so yea
2. I think she meant that it was the first responsibility she had ever had to do. Translating the French papers was more of a choice on her part, now shes responsible for Vincent
draver 09-22-2005, 08:53 PM I think it's preety safe to say Ethan was working with Rousseau all the time and not with The Others... Tho who knows...

belshep 09-22-2005, 10:25 PM Charlie has had no proof that Ethan was an 'other' - he never heard the whispers, either. That's why I think Sayid didn't agree with Charlie when he told the crowd at the caves that there are no 'others' - Sayid has heard the whispers, so he is still suspicious.
darkstar21 09-22-2005, 11:23 PM What if Charlie feels that Ethan may have been the only one of the others and he knows he killed him.
After all he knows of no other proof of any one else
houdini11 09-22-2005, 11:29 PM Of course, Ethan's name, Ethan Rom, is an anagram for "Other Man", so there's a good chance he was an Other. That and Tom Cruise's cousin. Hard to tell which fact is scarier.
JesSickUh 09-23-2005, 12:09 AM Maybe he meant it as there are no others coming for them at the moment. That it was just a distraction to take the baby.

But there're two kinds of Others nevertheless... The Others, as in the evil Walt-snatching ones... and the *other* others, like Rouseeau and Desmond...

liz_lost_fan 09-23-2005, 08:48 AM theres no doubt in my mind that Ethan id an other...
Ethan was super strong, and even Jack and Locke were beatin down by him, and he would've killed all of them if they hadn't had guns, so theres no way a pregnant Claire could escape him... unless DAnielle kidnapped her from Ethan (for entirely different reasons) and Claire escaped from HER...
has anyone seen Along Came a Spider?? kinda along those lines...
Lockefan 09-23-2005, 09:46 AM Ethan is as other as they come, babies! I thought Charlie's comments and the vehemence of same were strikingly puzzling, too. The way I explained it to myself was that, well, okay, he thinks Danielle is bloody NUTS and is convinced that she lit the fire and created the black smoke herself as a way to clear the camp and get a clear shot at Claire's baby, Aaron. Charlie is still so upset with Danielle snatching Turniphead (Aaron), that he reacted passionately like that, saying "there are no others!", meaning, "there are no others coming tonight, it was all a trick by Danielle, clue in, people!" He was frustrated that everyone seemed so panicked when, in his mind, it was all a ruse staged by Danielle. Soooo...he might not have really meant that there are no others, period, just that there are no others coming to get us TONIGHT.
Still...it did strike me as oddly adament or something, the way he reacted. It was like, chill, Charlie. First time I ever was on Shannon's side about anything *lol*, as I agreed with her when she said "You can't know that!" U go, girl!
bacolvin705 09-23-2005, 10:18 AM Thanks for your insights!
belshep 09-23-2005, 11:16 AM Draver is correct - there are multiple groups of 'others.' After Walt was kidnapped, I stopped believing that Ethan was connected to the Walt-kidnapping Others (for lack of a better name) because he took Claire instead of Walt. If he was working with that group, he would have known that the target was Walt and not Claire's baby.
So, there are several possibilities: 1) he was working on behalf of Danielle, who also thought that Claire's baby was the target, 2) he was once part of the Others but became separated for some reason and misinterpreted their message about 'coming for the child', just as Danielle did, 3) he was not connected to the Others that took Walt, but to another group of others that have a different agenda or 4) he was working on his own and wanted Claire and/or her baby for reasons we haven't discovered yet.
shes_a_lost_cause 09-23-2005, 11:26 AM Or maybe Ethan and the others had it wrong at first? Maybe, they thought it was Claire's baby that was "special" and after seeing Walt and observing him, they realized that it was Walt they needed not Aaron. So they went after Walt. It makes sense that they would think it would be the pregnant woman's baby that they needed because that was how they took Alex.

That's a good point and a real possibility. But what do you think is the characteristic or quality that makes someone 'special' to the Others? Do you think it's just age or something more? How would they know that an unborn baby would have whatever it is they are looking for?
Lockefan 09-26-2005, 01:59 PM I think they took whatever they needed from Aaron (for the time being) while he was still in vitro. I think they need something from children, such as stem cells, in order to make whatever it is they are making down there that can heal spinal cord injuries such as Locke's and Sarah's AND/or (and I'm really wedded to the following theory) they need the stem cells in order to make their antidote to whatever biological agent is out and about, prancing around the island, AND/or for one or both of those PLUS something(s) else. I think that they somehow erased Claire's memory of her time with them because otherwise (no pun intended with "other"wise  ) she would have known too much about what is going on and also she would have been fighting mad that they did something so invasive to Aaron, and she might have gone after them with a mother's wrath, which could take down even a strong other like Ethan.
I'm with my fave, Locke, who opines that each of the Lostaways was brought to the island for a reason (except, imho, maybe Hurley, who is the only one that it does not seem everything and everyone was working with the precision of German clockwork to get onto that flight and, in fact, it seems that everything and everyone was working against him getting on that plane...except for that very last woman at the gate, whom he hugged *lol*....I think Hurley might have been an "oversight" by the others as far as this grand plan and he therefore could be the key to foiling them, if foiling is in order). I think that both Aaron and Walt are important to the Others, both for the reason I went into in my spoiler-fonted blurb, but also maybe for other reasons to do with how "special" they each are in different ways. Walt apparently has some sort of ESP powers and Aaron, per the "psychic" is somehow very unique, whether for good or bad we don't know. Then again, in the case of baby Aaron, the psychic could have been an other and a full-of-it one at that, no more psychic than a pet rock and just trying to work a big con on Claire to get that baby on the plane.
TWO MORE DAYS until LOST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think we are going to find out WAY more in the second episode of the season than we did in the premiere!!!!!!! The teaser said "In just one week, the fate of all the Lostaways will be revealed", which to me says we will find out about our raft folks next week, too...even though I read a post in the spoiler section at one point saying we don't see them until 1/3 of the way into the season...hmmmmm. ANYWAY, we are certain to find out at least a glimpse of what in the HECK is going on on this island, when Desmond and Jack continue their conversation!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Brother!!!!!! I can't wait! Make your own kind of music, sing your own kind of song!
ahaer 09-28-2005, 04:46 PM Why would Charlie say to Shannon, "There are no others" when he himself was captured by one of them?????
Some possibilities:
1) Because that was not the original Charlie????? (as in Invasion of the body snatchers)
2) Because he has been mind-altered in some way by the others/island (like claire)
3) Because he was on heroin and refusing to deal with reality
4) Because he was trying to calm Shannon down
