I've had it stuck in my head since last night!

LOL me too! I was gonna try to figure out what it was today... thanks :)

A lot of people are thinking its 'The Mammas and the Poppas' but it was done as a solo project by Cass Elliot.

She had a great voice....

i LOVE Mama Cass.

This song (among others by Cass / Ms&Ps) is also used to great effect in the British movie from the mid-90s called "Beautiful Thing".

The entire time Jack was walking around down in the hatch I was just like.....what the h*ll is going on here, it was the craziest thing I ever seen in my life.

I think the Carpenters did a cover of Cass's original. I believe that was Cass singing on the program and not Karen Carpenter. They both had very distinct voices.

Or perhaps the other way round..Cass could have made a cover of their song...

I know what you mean. It reminded me of that scene in Silence of the Lambs, when Jodie Foster was wandering around the freak's apartment. Gave me the heebie jeebies.

I agree. It sounded really creepy, like something from a horror movie.

Today at school...my Song of the Day was Make Your Own Kind of Music. I was sining it all day and had it stuck in my head all night...the sad thing was I could only remember ONE line!

Definately reminded me of a horror movie. I was literally curled up on the couch thinking, "What the heck is going on?!" The whole scene with Jack in the hatch was by far the creepiest thing I have seen on Lost!

I thought it was poetic (or prophetic perhaps) that the song seems to deal with images of solitary. "Make your own music" and so on. I don't think that song was picked by accident but I don't know what it means either. At this point I'm convinced EVERYTHING has a meaning.

I was struck by how loud the song played and that it is a very bold hint (though I know not of what!) in addition to placing the album in a historic context.

My mind bounced from the song title to "The Mamas and the Papas" to Mama Cass herself: overweight, died choking on food, a bold and "all or nothing" individual...

Still unsure why this anthem of individuality was chosen... but it wil be for a purpose...

What a great choice of songs for someone who is confined to a solitary existence, forced to press a button every 108, "Make Your Own Kind of Music" is a veritable anthem.

Of course... since I'm an agoraphobic telecommuter who hasn't set foot out of his apartment in over nine months, perhaps I just identify with Desmond's plight a little too much.

(a side note-- Interestingly enough to those who commented on Desmond's waking up when it's still dark outside; It's AMAZING how fast your schedule asynches once you no longer interact with the outside world.)

I love this show.Probably none of this was Desmond's music, probably wasn't even Kelvin's, the albums may have been left from the original team that was in the hatch. It was very appropriate to set the mood of the episode.
