View Full Version : Shannon's Whispers
When Shannon came back to the cave, she stated that he heard whispers, and I think she even said she heard lots of whispers. Were there whispers to be heard when she was looking for Vincent (as we heard with Sayid last season)?
If she heard whispers, that would make her the third of the Lostaways (that we know of) who have heard whispers--Sayid, Sawyer, and Shannon. What does this mean?
And if there were no whispers for us, the viewers, to hear, does this mean that Shannon--exhausted, hungry, and still mourning her brother--imagined them?
miss emme 09-22-2005, 12:57 PM Oh there were whispers I heard them couldn't make out what they were saying tho.
Madge 09-22-2005, 01:24 PM What was Walt trying to say to her? I couldn't quite make it out.
wavenest 09-22-2005, 01:25 PM "Don't press the button, the button is bad" or siomething similar. It was said backwards
Guinevere 09-22-2005, 01:54 PM The only whisper I could make out before Walt showed up as "Shannon..." Like Sawyer's whispers, everything else wasn't as "loud" or clear.
i_love_dmjgmfna 09-22-2005, 06:59 PM Yeah, all I could make out was "Shannon". Thanks for the info on Walt. I had no idea what he was saying.
Here is an mp3 of the "button" whisper walt says.
I dont hear the word "Dont" in front of "Press the button".
In fact I hear "Press the button. No button's bad"

Aurora10 09-22-2005, 07:25 PM Oh-ho-ho...so scary. I'm surprised I didn't have nightmares last night. I didn't hear "don't" either.
everybodyhateshugo 09-22-2005, 08:43 PM I think that Walt is saying "Where's the button...don't ??????? ???? way." I slowed the backwards audio clip down.
Obsessive much.
icecrystal1972 09-22-2005, 08:47 PM How freakin' cool was that!!!! I just love you geeky types! That gave me serious goose bumps.
Kinda off topic, but do you guys think that the reason Vincent went missing was because he knows Walt has been taken and is trying to find him?
Thanks!
flora 09-23-2005, 02:28 PM When I watched the episode, I put the captions on and was delighted that for the first half of the episode that the captions came up on screen before the dialogue! (I guess something happened to the closed captioning during the second half because it got all screwed up!) So...it said "Whispers" a good 5 to 10 seconds before the whispers actually started. I turned up the volume really high and the first "whisper" is clearly Walt's childlike voice, then the other voices pop in after.
What I found really interesting (aside from Walt speaking backwards, soaking wet, with water coming out of his mouth- I joked that maybe the "sickness" was profuse sweating and that's why Walt was so wet!!!!)- is that when Shannon returns to the camp and argues with everyone about what she saw, she immediately equated seeing Walt in the jungle and the whispers to the Others though she hasn't had any encounters with them before. How did she know about the whispers being associated with the Others? Sayid *could* have told her...but I doubt it. He seemed even shocked when Sawyer asked him about the whispers he heard, like he didn't even want to acknowledge that he heard anything strange at all!
Dr.Funbags 09-23-2005, 02:32 PM Uhh, because its a freaky deaky night in the jungle - If I heard whispers all around and being told that the only "other people" on the island are "the Others" I'd prolly say that I heard the "Others" myself.
scuzzlebutt 09-23-2005, 02:48 PM It sounded just like Boone saying "Shannon" to me, right before she saw Walt! Freaky!

Wow, it's really interesting if it was Boone's voice. I definitely heard "Shannon" but couldn't identify the voice at all.
But if it was Boone, it ties in with Sawyer hearing the whisper "It'll come back around" in the voice of the man he killed (the shrimp stand owner, I can't remember his real name). Now, if we can determine that Sayid's whispers were also spoken by someone he knew who is now dead, we'll have a pattern.
Unfortunately, I can't decipher anything at all in Sayid's whispers...anyone have better ears?
BurningStar4 09-23-2005, 05:57 PM Walt is definitely saying "Press the button, no button's bad", at least that is what I hear clear as a bell.
Lost_In_Louisiana 09-23-2005, 06:08 PM Someone posted that they heard the whispers say, "She's here" when Shannon is looking around trying to locate the sounds.
I can't make them out and it's frustrating me!!!

It would make sense that Sayid hears his friends voice. Hassam/Essam? Has noone deciphered his yet? I recall reading it was the others talking? Do you mean, at the beginning of the whisper's they hear someone from their past, and then it becomes the "others"? Diary Girl heard the whispers too.
Lost_In_Lousianna, I haven't seen that posted before, very interesting. It fits in with what Sayid/Diary Girl ??? (can't recall) heard in the whispers. The others arguing about showing themselves, or asking for help. Are they seperate from the hillbillies, and they are trying to help? They brought Walt to Shannon?
MadisonFire 09-23-2005, 06:26 PM There is something to be said for who is whispering.
When Sayid heard the whispers, I couldn't understand them. Perhaps because they were in Arabic?
When Sawyer heard the whispers, I heard "It'll come back around." Which is what "not-Sawyer" said after he shot him.
I tried to hear who was saying what to shannon and need to go back and try again, because I thought the last voice I heard was Boone and it sounded like he said "It's not heaven" but I am quote sure that is not it.
Anyway it seems important not only WHAT they are saying, but WHO's voices they might be.
EDIT: ok and in the time it took me to post this, after stopping midway to go and pick up my kids, I see I am not alone in what I thought. lol
kingpause 09-23-2005, 06:27 PM "Shannon's Whispers" is a good name for a really bad emo band.
belly0fdesire 09-23-2005, 06:46 PM I heard the "it'll come back around" also.... and I definitely hear Walt say "Press the button", but i'm not so sure the second part is "no button's bad"... the first part is clear as can be, but I still have some question for the second part. Also, these whispers came from Walt, while the whispers that Sayid and Sawyer heard came from the forest... I'm sure that has to mean something. After Walt said what he did, there were other voices coming from the forest as well.. not just from Walt... can someone post the other whispers here so we can analyze them?
belshep 09-23-2005, 06:48 PM Yes, maybe Sayid's whispers are in Arabic which is why I can't understand any specific words. What I was trying to figure out is if all the whispers were voices of the dead.
Lost Sailor 09-23-2005, 06:54 PM Check this out, transcripts of the Sayid and Sawyer episodes of the whispers. http://www.lostlinks.net/whispers.htm

I run a coffee house where bands like this may come play. I whisper about them when they're around and yell bad things at them when they're whining and screaming into the mic...

Thank you grish2001 for pointing me to this resource!
It seems like Sayid's whispers were in English and from living people, which answers my question about the dead.
Lost Sailor 09-23-2005, 07:39 PM That site also translates Danielle's map and has Hurley's comic book translated too. The gist of it is: The map has a formula that has something to do with electomagnetic radiation. Could this be the power source? And Hurley's comic book is about super heroes and an alien. The alien uses mind control and does so by typing into a computer! Interesting huh?
Lost Sailor 09-23-2005, 07:42 PM But the last voice says it's Frank Duckett who says " It'll come back around" Isn't that the guy Sawyer shot? Unless Sawyer is remembering that part.

Yes, this is what confused me - Sawyer heard the voice and words of a dead man (Frank Duckett) and Shannon seems to have heard the voice and words of the dead Boone. So, I was trying to determine if Sayid also hears the words and voice of a dead person he knew. The link translation indicates otherwise, but it's possible that this translation is incomplete and Sayid's whispers really do include Arabic whispers from someone dead.
I'm thinking that if we can figure out the common aspects to the whispers, we might be able to figure out where or who they come from.

There was a magnet inside the hatch which I think was the power source? It was pulling Jack's key remember?
debispretty 09-24-2005, 02:01 AM Thank you, Thank you,Thank you. we have been trying to figure out what Walter said
to Shannon. That whole scene freaked me and my girls out.( don't think my youngest will be sleeping alone for a while) We think that the dog is gone because Walt is
gone, Walt has some powers to bring things to him (the bird hitting the window in season one) So is the dog comming to him the same way?
Well now that i've seen the dialogue that Walt had with Shannon i'm dying for someone to figure out what the whispers to Shannon were like they figured out Sayid's and Sawyer's. I'm really hoping its Boone's voice, that'd rock.
Daphne 09-24-2005, 04:54 AM I thought it was Boone's voice, although I think there was more than one voice whispering.

Same here...I would really like t osee the whispers transcribed. That would be freaky if it was Boone's voice she heard!
:)
Michael Orteig 09-24-2005, 05:47 PM After listening carefully with sound way up over and over again, I am still not sure what I heard... but it sounds like
I (eyes) see you ... ... I (eyes) see you(r eyes) ... Shannon
echo is strong, so I may have screwed up... I' am only sure about the "Shannon" part...
also, smthg seems weird about these whispers... somebody tried to play them backwards?
qorzm 09-27-2005, 04:46 PM Has anyone figured these out yet???
elfdream 09-27-2005, 05:31 PM I'm impressed that Shannon came right out and said she heard whispers. Among the castaways only Sayid and Sawyer have heard them..and they won't talk about it.
qorzm 09-27-2005, 07:47 PM seriously guys
we extracted the whispers and easily figured out what they said the last 2 times?
has anyone done this yet??
rachael100 09-27-2005, 07:51 PM ok, does anyone have a sound clip of the entire encounter with walt?? like as soon as she gets lost untill siyid find her? if you do could you post it here or send me a private message with it?

Couldn't it have been like, press the button. No button is bad? Instead of what everyone else thinks which is press the button. No! Button is bad! (Emphasis added by me.)
Meaning that he wants someone to push the button.
standing on the beach 09-27-2005, 09:26 PM i think the real question is, what button? why is the button bad? and don't forget, walt had the premonition about not opening "that thing" as he called it.

I'm guessing the "execute" button that we see Desmond pushing in the hatch... you know, the one Locke warns Jack not to push? I wonder what it does!
Quiksilver13oi 09-27-2005, 10:13 PM i found it funny how all the characters who have heard the whispers so far all have names that start wiht S

Exactly. It could easily be "no button is bad" as in "press ANY key..ANY ONE!! None of them are bad"
ChicaFrom3 09-28-2005, 01:28 AM i found it funny how all the characters who have heard the whispers so far all have names that start wiht S
Meaning, of course, that Sun will hear the whispers next.
Then Sceve.
We all know there are no coincidences on Lost.
theconundrumm 09-30-2005, 10:58 AM a friend thinks Shannon's whispers are: "can you see it... they're coming....i want to see it.... it's right in front of you"... and cant agree or disagree personally... and as for what Walt says... i thin it's more along... "where is the one... the one who is mad?"
