View Full Version : The Numbers
Tattoo 09-22-2005, 03:19 PM Could it be that they correspond to Elements on th Periodic Table,
4-Beryllium 8-Oxygen 15-Phosphorus 16-Sulfer 23-Vandium 42-Molybdenum
The could form a chemical compound plagueing the island. Or, The magnetic Rock on the island ( Jacks Key being drawn to it) may be made of it. Maybe the island generates a gigantic magnetic field that caused the crash. Or maybe the hatch is made of a metal with these elements as a remedy to the magnetic field. I know for a fact that Vandium and Molybdenum are used in strengthening steel. Magnetic fields can cause hallucinations(MKULTRA), could this be the "illness"? Locke could have got his mobility back because the magnetic field effected the neves in his spinal column.
Or does 108 point to a new element discovered on the island.
I don't know, am I off the mark here? Has this been discussed?
connrick 09-22-2005, 03:48 PM I hope I dont get booted off because its too full...............
I like your line of thinking here. That magnet part last night was shocking you might be onto something here.
Nice catch. This could certainly be on the right track.
pinchy11 09-22-2005, 04:26 PM 108 is all the numbers added up.
schwartzcaster 09-22-2005, 04:46 PM I'm going to put this into spoiler mode. Just to be safe.
I've thought for a while that the magetic field on the island may be the cause of Locke's recovery. I have friends who wear magnets taped to their back for back problems.
I think you're really on to something. But I think the magnetic field is manufactured. Notice that there was a sound of machinery when Jack leaned into the wall. I think the entire Island is surrounded by a magnetic field , probably carried around the Island by the cable that Sayid found. Protected from the outside world for some reason. Perhaps the injection is to protect against long term exposure to magnetism.

I realize they add up to 108, what I'm wondering is is because we see it for the first time in this episode (and in the hatch) I was wondering if the hatch is set up to isolate or even manufacture (Mine) this element ( the periodic table lists only about 104 elements). Could it be this element is alien in origin(meteor). What does this have to do with Walt? I don't know. Is Desmond in cahoots with the others? I dont know. Is this show awesome for making me think about it (obsess) to this level? Most likely.
JAZZYJ 09-22-2005, 05:38 PM Out of everything I have read thus far your theory is the best sounding, I like it Tatoo.
baryonyx 09-22-2005, 07:27 PM Interesting. I brought up something similar (http://www.thefuselage.com/Threaded/showpost.php?p=148645&postcount=19) months ago related to the elements, and was wondering if a magnetic field was responsible for the crash back on IMDB some time ago. Combining our ideas, perhaps the magnetic field is a containment field for something (perhaps some nuclear experiment, perhaps the creature, perhaps something else), and needs to be very powerful. Could very well be hassium, element 108.
Though why element 108 would be a good question... it is not one of the elements that would be in the island of stability.

There is a 108th element.

It's located at the bottom of the first big chart...

That chart's a wee bit (OK, almost a decade) out of date. :) Element 108 is named hassium. It is an extremely unstable element, falling below the first of the postulated islands of stability (114-116) and far below the hypothesized most stable superheavy element (126).

jmatte 09-22-2005, 09:12 PM And, of course, the numbers are printed on the Medication that Desmonds injects into his arm.
Desmond opens a gun "safe" where his guns are. It shows the last two numbers of the cominbation...
23 and 42.
And sorry for the out of date chart. I havent taken chemistry since 1994 =]
back then 104 was as high as we learned....

It's OK... just trying to be slightly funny and failing. :)
dms1973 09-22-2005, 10:32 PM I heard a theory on the numbers while listening to a morning talk show on the radio. Heres what this person had to say.
A mathmatician named Russo wrote a book about how every person on earth has a twin. The numbers come in because Russo said that there were a certain number of degrees of seperation between twins, they would be a maximum of a certain number of years apart in age, they would live on earth simultaneously for a certain number of years, etc etc. If I understood correctly all these conditions that exist between these twins and the numbers associated with them are the numbers that we are all so concerned over. Probably worth investigating if someone has the time.

1990 for me was the last year I had chemistry. I was using my textbook as a reference. I guess things have change huh.
The whole twins thing doesn't exite me that much. How does that explain Locke being able to walk again?
kajah 09-23-2005, 03:01 AM in reply to that theory on the radio: that has been proven to be a hoax.
hellotzp 09-23-2005, 04:39 AM just submitting this for fun; it's either a cool coincidence or a clever writer bending data to fit the numbers mythology, but made me grin ;-)
First line from a Zap2it article about ratings numbers for the show --
"More than 23 million people tuned into the season premiere of "Lost""
