View Full Version : Dialogue between Desmond and Jack
LockeLove 09-22-2005, 08:25 PM Forgive me if this has been posted before. I have been trying forever to log onto the site! Lots of activity I see...anyway..
I was discussing LOST with my boyfriend on the phone (dorks, I know) before and he brought something to my attention.
First off we both knew that stadium running guy was bound to be hatch guy. You could tell by the hair and also ..why would the introduce him if he wasn't going to be important.
Desmond said to Jack "see you in another life." This is a pretty obvious foreshadowing. But the comment that my bf picked up on might not have been so obvious. When Jack was running up the steps he tripped and stadium running guy said something to the effect of "trying to catch up with me?" and then I think something to the effect of him not being able to. Of course this is also foreshadowing to Jack "catching up" to Desmond on the island.
Yes, not really thrilling but I tell you light bulbs went off when my bf said this. I wish I was super sleuth like some of you and could make better connections!
ptmarion 09-22-2005, 08:31 PM There's also the interesting line "You run like the devil is chasing you."
When re-watching, I'm almost certain Desmond's advice first says "You have to lift HER up," not, IT as Jack apparently hears. Can anyone else with the episode taped/saved give back me up here?

And the funny thing is that Jack was trying to pass him up. The look on his face told me that. For me, that reference made me think more of Jack and his father. Always in competition with each other. I wonder if Desmond, not being a doctor, was still somehow connected to the hospital and that's how he knew Jack's competitive streak ... and that Sarah had recovered (or did he have something directly to do with that? If he is a scientist ... and did work in some capacity with Jack's hospital, he might have been able to do something to Sarah after Jack finished with the operation).
I love sleuting!
LockeLove 09-22-2005, 08:34 PM It would be cool if someone had a transcript up.
I also forgot the mention in my original post that in a way Jack has run and caught up with Desmond. Remember that last season Locke kept telling Jack that he was destined to be on the island. So Jack is destined to meet up with Desmond. Of course I'm on the edge of my seat trying to figure out what this all means know!
LockeLove 09-22-2005, 08:43 PM That is true about Desmond being a doctor, or at least studying to be one. Could this be another "mirror"? Except Desmond is the bad, evil "doctor"?
bucki4life2003 09-22-2005, 08:43 PM i believe he says HER.....dont have it saved but i will back you up on that until proven wrong :)
lostinSLC 09-22-2005, 08:44 PM I heard him say "lift her up" too. I am positive. When I get hoem tonight I will watch that part again.

If i remember correctly, DesmonD was catching up to Jack, and that made Jack turn on the heat and pick up his pace so DesmonD did not catch him...

Definently, ive watched that part several times and he absolutely said "you have to lift HER up"....the first time.
I thought it was significant that Desmond mentioned studying to be a doctor, not sure of his exact quote though. Any thoughts on this?
Also, it has been crazy trying to get on to the 'Lage since last night! I'll be pretty bummed if it stays like this. Here's to hoping that something can be done to allow everyone on. I was not even able to get on and "Watch Live" with folks, which is one of my fave things on this board. Sigh.
BigBlueEyes 09-22-2005, 10:51 PM I back up whoever said that Desmond said to lift HER up. I'm sure thats what he said.

Looked to me like Desmond was ahead of Jack when Jack noticed him. But it might have been the camera angle. It was low and angled so that the aisles slanted to the right, which might have made Jack look like he was ahead.

I'll have to play that scene over again. I thought he said "it."
Peffe 09-23-2005, 03:42 AM Did no one have on closed captioning?
I'll have to start watching it with CC on...
waltisfuture 09-23-2005, 03:59 AM It's quite common Catholic vernacular to say that you're going to "lift up" your trials and tribulations to God.
See you in an other life.

I think it's here that I posted a bunch of links that could be related to "Desmond." One that I didn't include was one about a Desmond Tutu (I think that was his last name). He was a priest! And many theologins have a PhD after their names ... a.k.a.. Doctor!!
But Desmond is Scottish not Irish. But the Scotts may have the same saying since they are Celtic, too.
Joe_Banana 09-23-2005, 04:07 AM It's definately 'you have to lift it up'. The accent makes it confusing but you can tell if you listen closely.

Hey, I think you're on to something...
If Desmond could have done something to fix Sarah's back and paralysis behind Jack's back, then he could have done the same thing for Locke when he ended up on the island. Two people with spinal injuries that miraculously recovered, and Desmond was the common denominator!
I've read mention of cloning, which can be done with stem cells, which can also be used to fight paralysis. I think there's a link here.

Well, we don't know yet what caused Locke to be in the wheelchair. We don't know it had anything to do with a spinal injury. Only time will tell on that revelation!
