I just noticed this on my second viewing:

Check out the washing machines in these shots:

http://iwontheinternet.com/junk/lostwashers/

They are the exact same model as the Pewter finish of GHW9400P available here

http://www.whirlpool.com/catalog/product.jsp?src=WASHERS&categoryId=115&productId=218

Here's a shot of them in the pewter finish as pictured:

http://www.whirlpool.com/catalog/product_feature_detail.jsp?parentCategoryId=113&categoryId=115&productId=218&featureKey=SF21913

Which means Desmond/whoever can't have been there for 16 years without contact, as this style of washer (particularly with the colored leds / buttons) is very recent for whirlpool.

HOLY SCRAP

Question is.. are they a working washer and dryer? You need energy, running water, and gas or electric heater. Right? Where's it coming from?

I think there have been different people, or groups of people, living in the hatch for specific periods of time and this has been going on for decades. The hatch contains items from different eras, so each group probably brings items from their time when they arrive. That could explain why relics from the 60's or 70's (record player, Mama Cass LP) coexist with the very contemporary washer/dryer. Why they didn't upgrade to CDs is another question!

Desmond has LOTS of energy down there. He's playing records and washing clothes, not to mention doing who-knows-what with his elaborate computer system.

I dunno.. I find it kind of weird to have a dryer in an underground bunker. On aside..wouldn't someone smell the dryer sheets through the vents? Okay okay bad joke. I just know I can tell when the neighbors are drying their clothes!

I think it is a washer AND a dryer. They make models that look the same. Front loading and top loading. I guess so they match. OT, but I really do like those machines!

My guess is that the Whirlpool PR department had them placed with the Lost production company, and they've used them a couple of times now as props.

I work for a company that does this - you see our product all over the place on TV. I think the slightly retro look of the product worked as long as you don't look too closely at the buttons and LED.

I think a show that has the attention to detail to have the numbers on a vial, typed into a keyboard, in graffiti on the wall, and on a safe's combination has the attention detail not to throw any old washer in there if they are going for a late 70s / early 80s period look.

r4stl1n

There are many ways to acquire vintage washers and dryers for use as props. Surely the front-loaders of old were around in the '50s, not the '70s and '80s. They began using the porcelain white (and green) cube washers and dryers in the late '60s.

The washer and dryer in this scene are obviously placed there to showed he has been given modern appliances, and that someone is still funding this "experiment".

Also, we can clearly see the Tide bottle and the fabric softener have the fairly new caps that drip back into the bottle. Those came out in the mid '90s, IIRC. Who keeps replenishing that stock?

Nice American-style 220v outlet the dryer is plugged into, not European. Another hint there.

Thanks for the captures, charlesv! :D

edit: in the sidebyside piccie, you definitely nailed it. Nice!

I have that washer and dryer - It's a whirlpool duet in pewter - front loading and relatively new. My husband noticed it right off and we thought it was odd with all the "old" stuff they were pointedly showing. Seems to me, that Desmond's had some sort of outside contact recently.

Great machines by the way - can wash extremely large loads, if anyone's interested.

Down to the last detail, that's a Whirlpool Duet like the one Finn and I have. On most shows, I'm sure you could wirte that off as carelessness by the prop guy, but I'm sure the makers of Lost know we will be watching closely. I'm pretty sure these washer/dryers are there to show that this habitat has been refurbished recently.
Maybe Desmond just really likes the late sixties/early seventies but isn't satisfied with their stain removing capabilities.

During this scene, look at what the bottles are sitting on.....a very old looking washer/dryer pair. Looks like what we had when I was a kid, in the 70s. White, boxish, faux chrome knobs. The new pair could be a rplacement for the old pair, meaning, someone is keeping him supplied with more than fresh fruit and eggs, etc...

I don't buy the product placement thing.

I mean, no, I do buy it. I completely believe that Whirlpool is an advertiser and paid Lost to insert a shot of their washer/dryer in there. It's product placement. Yes. I agree.

I do NOT buy that it's an oversight on the prop guys' side. There has to be a meaning; there are dozens of ways they could insert the washer/dryer into the show without implying an anachronism (flashbacks come to mind.) The production team knows how obsessive we fans are, and they knew we'd catch. I don't think they'd insert a modern washer/dryer into a scene with 80s decor unless they meant it.

I'm absolutely convinced it means something beyond the advertising meaning.

Yes, they work. There is a shot of the clothes going around in the dryer and Desmond washes his bowl in the kitchen sink. With all of those computers and the lights in his living areas and the halls, it's not strange that he has electricity, too.

Maybe and maybe not ... take a look at the stuff on the shelves over the washer & drayer. You'll see 2 bottles of Downey fabric softner and one bottle of Tide laundry soap (the concentrated kind). Ture, they are turned so you only see them from the side but they are quite reconizable even that way!

Does it matter if he got them within a year or so? We don't know how long he's been down there. We don't know if he's on his own or if someone is delivering these items to him. We don't know if they even work because the close up of the clothes spinning in the dryer doesn't reveal the machine (not from what I saw).

We need to remember that this is just the first eppy. There will be more to reveal more. Maybe Desmond replaced Ethan after he was killed. That's a big island and it appears there is more than one hatch ... so it would be very easy for him to have arrived and gotten down there with none of our lostaways even knowing it.

Ok, We know that these shows have tons of professional consultants that help them get the details right. So, we need our own! What kind of injection system is he using? Is it a NEW technology or an OLD technology. Also, what kind of medicine, real or imagined, can or should be injected in this manner? I remember getting my smallpox vaccination in the 60s and it was an air-type injection. (Hurt like h**l too!) But, that's the only injection I've gotten or seen that was needle-less, that was air-injected. So, that makes me think, what type of medicine could this be? Not simple steroids, that would have a needle. Where are our experts here?

Just a side note.... I've had shows in the past that were *must see* shows. But, I have never gone over a show with a fine tooth comb, second guessing every *little* thing that happens in it! I Love This Show!!

about this ad / prop guy stuff...

Really, I think the average viewer is getting pretty quickly that he is viewing a "vintage 70's" flat during the first scene.
Also, the average viewer WON'T miss that something as big as these wash/dry machines don't fit in the picture. They are clearly late 90's designs, minimum... It shocked me first time I saw the introductory sequence...

So, I don't think Lost team would screw up with this kind of details... which means that the underground facility was refurbished recently.

Where would Desmond get his cherries if he had no contact with the outside world since more than 16 years, anyway?

I was thinking on the cherries, too. But then I realized that outside of his underground home there is light coming in from two huge windows (covered with venetian blinds). Since that light cannot be from outside, he might have a hothouse underground with special lights that help plants grow. But the washer and dryer truly shows us that he has had outside contact within the past decade. Also the laundry supplies are clearly modern-day.

I was discussing this on another board since last week myself with mixed reactions.

#1 There is no doubt that these are new washer and dryers. Several links can be found to support this. There are older front load washer/dryer combos, but they would also be made in a time that push button controls were not the norm. Also, when Desmond is doing pull-ups, you can make out the digital feel of the controls.

#2 It is important to the show because it is important to know how long he has possibly been down there or how long it's been before he had physical contact with the outside world. If those are purposefully placed, new appliances, then the time in question is no longer than a year or so (at least that's when I remember seeing those models in stores).

yea their definitly new washers, i have the exact same ones except in white, the buttons match up perfectly, and we got these like 2 years ago when they had just come out, and i know that the grey/black model is the newest kind, idk when they came out exactly but probly the last year. and im guessing that maybe since that guy is in quarantine, theirs someone sending or delivering him stuff every once and a while. and maybe that stuff he injected in him could be a medicine to prevent the disease a little, or keep him alive, or maybe that stuff was some kind of drug that makes him likereally strong and jacked u p, kinda like steroids but maybe better?? idk? i mean take a look at eathan, he wasnt that big but he kicked the sh*t out of jack, and killed a few people, maybe thats what he was using, maybe some formula with the numbers or something crazy that i cant even begin to explain, maybe like u can harness the power of the numbers to use how u want, and one way is to make this super formula) prevents him from dying from his disease, makes him strong, drugs ihm up or something)

At one time Whirlpool manufactured appliances for Sears. I don't know for sure if that's still true today, but it's possible the Kenmore model is the same product as the Whirlpool model.

Front loading washer, top loading home.

Perhaps he should have spent his Desmond-dollars on a security system instead. One that has cameras 'outside' the confines of his own quarters. The door only opens from one side, yet he scattered all the cameras on 'his side' of that door. Narcissist, or just some bored guy shooting his own home videos?

From the looks of the appliances, this show's gonna be over as soon as Best Buy makes another delivery.

Maybe they just prefer vinyl. ;) I've known people who have access to CDs and CD players and still have extensive record collections and use record players almost exclusively. Why? Dunno. But there you have it.

I am not a techy person, but could it have to do with the magnetic field that appears to be inside the hatch? I know, for example, that magnets and computers don't typically work and play well together.

snshn
09-28-2005, 10:45 AM
I think there have been different people, or groups of people, living in the hatch for specific periods of time and this has been going on for decades. The hatch contains items from different eras, so each group probably brings items from their time when they arrive. That could explain why relics from the 60's or 70's (record player, Mama Cass LP) coexist with the very contemporary washer/dryer. Why they didn't upgrade to CDs is another question!

I think you're right. Did they ever reveal what the crazy guy(who Hurley got the #s from) did before going crazy? Maybe he (or the guy he got the #s from) was in that hatch previously and having to type the command into the computer every day drove him nuts, especially if the command did somthing bad or strange or whatever.

MightyFulkron
09-28-2005, 10:53 AM
I think the reason he has a recent washer dryer and such a crap security system and what not is because of the large magnet in the hatch (the one that lifts Jack's extremely masculine necklace). I'm not a video expert, but I'm pretty sure that would mess with most video equipment, so he has to rely on mirrors and the such (also explain the 1970's computer and reel to reel data banks in the geodesic dome part). But I totally agree that in a show with such atention to detail they wouldn't get lazy with the washers.

Actually Desmond says he has been there for 3 years, Danielle has been there for 16 years, and the OTHERS have been there the longest of whom knows how long that's been...

Nice catch on the makes of the dryers, and yes can definately see a bottle of what appears to be possibly *Tide fabric detergent..*. whatever it is, the washing detergents and fabric softeners are in the new style bottles. Also i don't beleive fabric softener use is something done back then either, from my konwledge it's only recent times that this practise started... and those are clearly fabric softener bottles on the machines...

I like the catch of the Ping Pong Paddle, if you notice in that shot the ping pong ball itself is on the coffee table. Anyone can play with one on there own though, you don't need the whole table to create some kind of fun with one. *i've even seen tables that split in the middle to play one person with the other side raisd like this L*

And Backgammon, i've plade many a backgammon game by myself as an only child isolated in the Rural areas of Australia. So it is plausible, however he seems pretty interested in the magazine next to his breakfast, as it's read most of the way through, and looks pretty new and glossy unlike the older style magazines which have less gloss 20 years ago like... *allowing for going back passed danielles arrival time frame* .:)

Also the painting in that shot, i think is on another thread as discussed as looking like a painting of a tornado, but could be someone painted a picture of the blacksmoke on the island too?? http://www.thefuselage.com/Threaded/images/icons/icon5.gif

Oh and the relevance of only some of the clues being related to australia... HELLO :toot: there is one bigger clue LOL *the whole plane originated in Sydney Australia, and every one on board was in Australia to catch that flight back to LA,* and detoured to FIJI but got of course...

anyways, now i'm getting way ahead of us all

hehe
:p

I just noticed this on my second viewing:

Check out the washing machines in these shots:

http://iwontheinternet.com/junk/lostwashers/

They are the exact same model as the Pewter finish of GHW9400P available here

http://www.whirlpool.com/catalog/product.jsp?src=WASHERS&categoryId=115&productId=218

Here's a shot of them in the pewter finish as pictured:

http://www.whirlpool.com/catalog/product_feature_detail.jsp?parentCategoryId=113&categoryId=115&productId=218&featureKey=SF21913

Which means Desmond/whoever can't have been there for 16 years without contact, as this style of washer (particularly with the colored leds / buttons) is very recent for whirlpool.

HOLY SCRAP

The funniest thing was on Saturday night when they replaced Orientation the first commercial was for Sears and it had that washing machine dryer set in it. :)

To the above poster. Well i know something that is very funny. You mentioned Sears in the post which made me check out a few things.

Lo and behold. The machine featured in the episode could be Whirlpool GHW9400 OR a Kenmore Elite 45986. This two machines are the same. Just a little different on some small things, like the buttons doesnīt look exactly the same and so on.

Here in Sweden where i live, they have the Whirlpool one, but with a different number. I dont really understand why. Its kinda good machine, but it vibrates too much. I dont like that.

I also know why they have to be on pedestals. There is a electronic board in the bottom of the machine. If it stands on a cellar, water could leak in. Results: water on electronic board. NOT VERY GOOD

It seems the island has had many plane crashes and boat wrecks, maybe the appliances and supplies were on a ship that crashed there recently.
