Maybe someone has mentioned this already but when Jack is walking around in the hatch the music from the begining just starts up. Then it abruptly stops. Desmond is standing with a gun at Locke so is there someone else there?

Excellent question, and we could tie in the bunkbeds with this theory that there is someone else in the Hatch, besides Desmond, Jack, Locke and Kate.

I think the other bed belonged to Ethan. He got the sickness somehow, so Desmond locked him out of the hatch.

A very shakey theory at best but, I think there's a chance. :)

As for the music randomly stopping and starting, I have no idea. ;)

I was very disoriented during that scene with Jack, Locke and Desmond...it didn't appear to be the same space that had the living quarters in the earlier hatch scenes, especially when I saw the huge reel-to-reel equipment. . So I was very confused about the location of the record player and who would have been within reach.

Did Desmond have the gun on Locke the entire time during this scene? What if he didn't have the gun aimed at Locke because Locke didn't have a gun so Desmond didn't feel threatened. So Desmond starts the music and stops the music. (Good point belshep....where the heck IS the record player in reference to where they are standing??) What if Desmond only drew the gun on Locke because he saw that Jack had his gun out? But I think Desmond turned the music off.

maybe Desmonds not evil, just scared...maybe he's hiding from the others just liek them??

Maybe Desmond is from the tail section of the plane & he found the hatch? I KNOW, this is probably so wrong, but my husband suggested this so blame him!

Well, after watching the opening sequence again, the last thing Desmond does before aiming the mirrors at the hatch is push some buttons on the "hi-fi" system, then the lights go down and he runs over to the telescope-looking thingy. From that, I think the music comes on when Jack goes in because that's the "alarm" system, and his entrance has tripped it. Maybe it just automatically goes off after a minute or two, don't most alarm systems do that? I mean, once the alarm sounds, you have all the information you need (that it's been tripped), so it doesn't need to continue to sound.

anyway, my two cents.

There's definitely someone else living in the hatch. The bottom bunk is clearly neing used, during teh pullups, you can see 2 kinds of detergent on the washer - liquid and powder (not foolproof I realize), and it looks like a freakin tennis racket on teh chair in the den. Who plays tennis alone?

Who plays tennis in the jungle at all? I haven't seen any courts yet.

Ok, if someone else is living in the hatch with him, the he could have definently turned the music off. But then where was this person when we saw Dessy wake up? And when we saw Dessy doing all his daily ritual stuff...there was no one else. Do you think there are more bunks with a lot more people and we've only seen a portion of the underground bunker?

I think that they spilt shifts, cuz Des. was just waking up, and going through the daily waking up routine, so whoever else was with him does the day shift...maybe the other person got back between all the stuff...

Well in one of the shots of his apartment there was a ping pong table. It did look like one half was folded up such that you could play alone. When I get home today I will grab that image and post it.
