View Full Version : From the Preview: Hurley Down Under
Mr. Find 10-03-2005, 03:26 AM After viewing the preview for "Orientation" I am left wondering how Hurley makes it down into Desmonds's underground dwelling. I am serious. I'm thinking there must be another way to get there, besides the shaft, because there is no way this dude took the old rope drop way.
To be revealed...
TehOther 10-03-2005, 10:15 AM Maybe the monster helped him down with its long extendable arms
lol
other then that I have no clue.
lostscape 10-03-2005, 11:08 AM I was also wondering how Hurley entered the hatch. Clearly there must be another entrance, otherwise how could all the appliances and mainframes get down there? Not to mention that enormous magnetic device that looks like a Tesla coil!!!

Good point. Either there is (or at least was at one time) another entrance so those items could get down there -- that is unless such items could have been assembled on the spot. But then we have Ole Hurley going down there so, unless they dreamed up an ingenious way of lowering him down the shaft other than a rope, things are pointing to there being another entrance.
Is it me, or does Hurley being down there seem to be the most fascinating image from the preview. It's may be just the the lighting and camera angle but he seems scarey looking in this brief image.

Yeah, that was the best image from the preview. Maybe it was the way they slowed the footage down when they got to that part...I don't know. But Hurley was sure looking freaked.
castdownpbj 10-03-2005, 09:58 PM If you notice, Hurley is in the doorway to the room Kate was in, the food closet or whatever. Look around him in the preview. Hurley found the food, now he's gonna steal it all for himself. Hence: Everybody Hates Hugo
Danny 10-04-2005, 12:51 AM Can anyone show me a picture of hurley being down in the hatch? i can't find any.. i know it's from the preview but maybe someone screen captured one? I didn't see the latest preview.
lostscape 10-04-2005, 01:13 AM Here is a screen cap (http://lost-media.com/modules.php?name=coppermine&file=displayimage&album=737&pos=11)of
Hurley in the hatch
Michelle Friday 10-04-2005, 02:34 AM Kate stuffed her pockets with the candy bars and wasn't that cute? now if
Hurley does it, what is it? cute, too? I would hope so. If he has a food
addiction and Charlie has a heroin addiction, which one will be judged
the harshest? I love Hurley, ok?!!! Just don't want to see him trashed if
he eats something!
ShaneR 10-04-2005, 11:59 AM My favorite quote from the show so far (Hurley to Charlie)
"I'm a big guy, it's going to be a while before you'll want to give me any piggyback rides" (or something to that effect).
lostscape 10-04-2005, 12:08 PM You are right, Hurley rocks! Welcome to the 'lage ShaneR!
:hurley:
JAZZYJ 10-04-2005, 12:12 PM Just picture Hurley going down the hatch like Santa going down the chimeny.
Snabbygail 10-04-2005, 12:41 PM I love Hurley, don't get me wrong, I can't picture him going down the hatch. I conjure up more the image of Pooh getting stuck in Rabbit's hole.

Nice analogy....I like that.
Mr. Find 10-04-2005, 12:58 PM Going back to last season, for the moment, it never made sense to me having Hurley as part of the party that trekked out to the hatch. Putting aside the rigors of a two or three mile walk, what were they possibly thinking? That they would open the hatch and find an escalator? All I kept thinking was, "it will be like the Posideon Adventure, and Hurley will have to be coaxed (ala, the Shelly Winters' character) to enter the shaft." Well, it didn't work out that way, apparently.
How Hurley gets down there? This is the real cliffhanger. I can't wait!
Snabbygail 10-04-2005, 01:07 PM Who else was going to recognize the numbers on the side of the hatch and know they were evil? Instead of the hatch resembling Pandora's box it would of seemed innocuous. That's just a boring plot. LOL.

Maybe he takes the elevator down that's hidden behind a tree.
nesta411 10-04-2005, 01:16 PM im pretty sure there was another entranceat one time. if you remember, down in the hatch it looked like he had a bunch of buckets something that looked kinda like concrete and it also looked like there was a doorway that looked to have been sealed at some point. it would make sense that there would be another entrance, otherwise how would "him" get in there or desmond get in there without opening that top hatch.
lostscape 10-04-2005, 01:32 PM I think you can get into the hatch from a few discrete entrances, including underwater.
standing on the beach 10-04-2005, 01:37 PM i don't know why you think hurley couldn't fit through the hatch! the thing is quite large, and i think hurley has mentioned several times that he is spry for a big guy. just because one is overweight doesn't mean that can't make it down a hatch. he managed to cross that rickety bridge in numbers and he made it out of the way of the dynamite in exodus pt. two.
JAZZYJ 10-04-2005, 01:47 PM I would have to guess thats how he gets down, by either lowering himself or by the help of someone else and being lowered.
goddessblue 10-04-2005, 01:50 PM ;) Kate stuffed her pockets with the candy bars and wasn't that cute? now if

I agree. I can't think of one person on that island (except maybe Desmond) who wouldn't go nuts at the sight of all that food.
Ok, maybe "nuts" wasn't the right choice of words....but you know what I mean. ;)
There has got to be another enterance to the hatch. Or more than one. I am sure all the furnishings didn't get there through the only enterance we've seen so far. And, I mean, how did the plumber who did the shower and sink and (I'm assuming) toilet get down there? Unless Desmond is really a Jack of All Trades and installed it himeself. Get it? Jack? OK....haven't had my coffee yet, sorry.....
Danny 10-04-2005, 05:02 PM Hah, yeah, i bet Hurley just goes down the hatch... but there has got to be another entrance. He's not like morbidly obese... just maybe more overweight than average. I too can't wait to see what he does with the food... i wouldn't blame him for eating a bunch. I hope if i were him that i would be able to stand the temptation. It seems that everyone on the island will go through struggles... and food might be just the thing for Hurley. Poor guy.
JAZZYJ 10-04-2005, 05:04 PM Oh have no doubt Hurley will munch out.

He's not wet-rules out underwater entrance. He does look as if he has been sweating a great deal, maybe he does go through another way? (more strenuous, longer route?)
And I hate to say this, but myself having once been "maybe more overweight than average," would mean 50-60 lbs tops...Hurley is pretty obese. Even if he can keep up above ground pretty well, the cable & trees couldn't hold up under Kate's weight...Hurle y would need 1/2 the survivors to lower him so he doesn't get hurt.:stretchr:
sportsphotogirl 10-04-2005, 11:45 PM I am guessing that there is another entrance, but Hurley doesn't take that either. Maybe Hurley "happens" about the hatch after it blows up. Maybe he is just walking through the jungle, being happy go "lucky" Hurley and falls through when it blows up. The only remaining part of the Hatch being the food pantry. Maybe then Hurley feels as though his luck has changed. Maybe the numbers aren't so cursed after all.
EyeAmLost 10-05-2005, 01:46 PM is that the Pharma logo in the forefront, again?

What if Hurley accidentally fell down the hatch? I mean, was the opening big enough for him to accidentally, but graciously, fall into it? I can't remember how wide the opening is...

I dunno Juniebun. The opening was 40-50 feet down. If it were big enough for him to fall through, could he fall that far without breaking an arm or a leg, at least? He didn't look injured in the preview.

That's true. I was wondering if it was WIDE enough to fit him. I suppose falling 40 or 50 feet would be painful and he'd have SOME noticeable injuries. We'll have to wait and see. I'm not a patient person, tho!!!
I bet Jorge reads some of these posts and thinks "jeez, I'm not *that* big"...

Oh, Sier...that makes me feel bad! Well, we all love Hurley/Jorge's portrayal. He's one character that you can't hate or think is boring or even unnecessary. And...he IS a big guy, but a great actor. You can't deny either of those, but well, I suppose talking about his weight all the time isn't fair...however...it is something that they play on in the script...or in the show...
Bradislost 10-05-2005, 03:04 PM Very True!

Jorge is great! I can't imagine the island without Hurley. He always makes me laugh!
Maybe there is another entrance/exit, and Desmond uses it (after all the previews show him running in the jungle). Then maybe Hurley sees him come out of the exit and uses it to get down to the living quarters?
Mr. Find 10-06-2005, 01:05 PM So Hurley walks in through the front door. That was it!!!??? And the for gnoshing out we will have to wait until next week? I'm bummed.:frown:
Looks like our freind, Jack, is going to splash the proverbial cold water on the feast in next week's episode. "Nobody eats anything", he says. Jeez, what a fuddyduddy!!! Stuff looks all right to me, Heck, it's even Dharma-approved! Just gotta remember to boil it first, and not to go swimming for thirty minutes after eating.
