Simply put: A Ba Gua is one of the tools used in feng shui to help determine preferred locations,in the home or office, for certain functions; such as wealth, health, fame, love and more.

I found this at another "LOST" site. Very interesting, to say the least.

Check it out: http://www.circle-of-light.com/fengshui/bagua.html

Don't know if this has been posted but the logo of the bagua is wrong. Four of the trigrams are upside down. Fairly common mistake but you'd think someone might have caught it. You could make the argument they're in a different order. The trigrams are read from inside to out and on a line they're read from bottom to top, that's usually where the mistake happens.

I think based on a quick search, that the location of the trigrams in the Dharma Logo/bagua is what western culture, at least, accepts as an accurate representation.

Most of the websites I have found (random sampling from Google search) have had Bagua compasses/maps with trigrams identical to that of the Dharma Logo. Of the six below, only one (the last) has a different trigram layout.

http://www.fengshuihelp.com/Bagua_directions.htm NOTE: N<-->S reversed on this one but, relatively speaking (just turn it over and all other trigrams are in correct position), the layout is identical to those above.

http://www.chinapage.com/astronomy/bagua.html Scroll down to Inner World Arrangement. This one is the only one I found that differs from the Dharma Logo.

The placement/location of the trigrams could also be related to the use of the bagua (I haven't checked this out yet). For example is it being used for feng shui, and is that different than a bagua used for navigation? Etc.

This is Huge! The reason the Dharma Station is so well maintained, it is where the Rank (Leaders) stayed acording to the chart. Now, let us see what the other staton's logo looks like. We will find out what was there.

Damn, I was totally convinced there was a binary code in the logo that somehow would translate into the numbers if properly read. But I guess this is the final death knell for the idea that the numbers come from the dharma logo.

The Numbers came onto the show before The Logo did-- so the numbers probably couldn't have been chosen to fit the the logo unless they were really thinking ahead.

AND The bagua/dharma logo was in fact invented hundreds (thousands?) of years before the show ever started. so the logo couldn't have been made to fit the numbers unless the writers had a time-machine.

Interesting you mentioned binary code. The bagua (and Dharma Logo) DO contain binary. Each group of three bars in the bagua compass trigrams represents a different number. A single long bar represents (0) or female/yin and 2 smaller bars represent (1) or male/yang. Reading from the inside of the compass out, the binary code for each,
beginning with the three solid bars and going clockwise, is as follows: 111 (or 7), 010 (2), 100 (4), 001 (1), 110 (6), 101 (5), 000 (0) and 011 (3). Unfortunately, they don't correlate to our numbers, but they could relate to the different stations.
