View Full Version : Noticed some Desmond things in Adrift
jbdean 10-04-2005, 02:14 AM I'll add these comments to the apropriate boards as I come across them but I found that after rewatching "Adrift" on the encore replaying of it tonight, I saw some things that I didn't notice before.
One is that Desmond doesn't "ask" Locke if the world is still up there, he says it in a statement and with a touch of mocking surprise. Kind of like if he'd said, "So ... the world is still up there ... hmmmm ... that's interesting." It makes for a totally different take on the scene.
Also, while I thought Desmond must have recognized Jack I now don't think so. Locke tells Desmond not only Jack's name but that he's a doctor and Desmond has a very clear view of him on his telescope. Yet there is not even a hint of recognition in his voice or on his face as he's getting this info.
Yet, when we see them at the end, when Desmond has the gun to Locke's head and he peers out at Jack (when Jack has recognized him), he does seem to recognize Jack. I am wondering what did it for him. Does he really now know that it's Jack or not know and the look is only that of having the upper-hand?
And IF Desmond didn't recognize Jack, that shoots a hole in the theories that Desmond had some "bigger plan" to get Jack involved in whatever it is he's involved with.
I also caught 2 things in the preview for next week:We see Desmond working franticly at the computer as sparks fly behind him. Is his bunker exploding? And we see him running through the jungle. Does this mean he's just going to disappear into the woods and might come back later or will something happen to him while he's out there?
I so want to believe that the start of a character section for Desmond is a good sign that, even if it's down the road, he will come back. I am keeping my fingers crossed!
LONG LIVE DESMOND!!!
IamLOST922 10-04-2005, 09:15 AM Thanks so much for that information. I agree with you about him not recognizing Jack. Jack had plenty of reason to remember Desmond because that night was a major moment in Jack's life but for Desmond, he just gave some stranger a bit of advice.
I think Desmond is going to be sticking around. At least, that is what I am hoping!

Yeah, there have been a lot who thought his meeting with Jack was not chance but the more I think about it, I think it was chance ... and that "chance meeting" would play even more into the whole "miracle" belief thing that Desmond touched on. And the "destiny" belief that Locke holds to.
ETA: I can't spell!
edeewildwild 10-04-2005, 02:51 PM Of course there is the remote possiblity that Jack has met Desmond in his past BUT that past is still to happen for Desmond who has not yet met Jack. And will not, until the circumstances are aligned.
Sort of Dr. Who (the British sf show) and sort of like the Twighlight zone....and Maybe the Varley story (novel and movie with Cheryl Ladd and Kristofferson) "Millenium".

Even if the show was about time travel, which it's not, that wouldn't make sense because Desmond met Jack before Jack married Sarah. If he hasn't met Jack yet, then Jack couldn't have been married to Sarah. Their lives intertwined and so they can't be coming and going at different times.
JAZZYJ 10-04-2005, 03:09 PM I think Locke and Desmond will get along just fine.

Yeah, I do too if Desmond will give Locke a chance. While they are on similar plains, Desmond has been holed away for so long that he's leary of strangers. If he won't let Lovke "in" then they're never going to be able to team up. And what a team THAT would be! Yeeehaaa!

I think Desmond didnt recognize Jack at first due to which angles he was seeing him at. If you are totally not expecting to see someone someplace and you see them at an angle its not really surprising that you wouldnt recognize them. It really seemed like a gleam of recognition at the end.
And just how amusing was it to see Jack's face as all his beliefs about fate and coincedence slam to a halt! Fine piece of acting on Foxy's part.
As for the spoiler Im fairly certain he runs off for a while as shown there.
The problem in keeping Desmond around is that as a character he knows to much. It would be to the writer's benefit to incapacitate him somehow. BUT that does not mean he has to die. Having him runaway and hide is also plausible, and certainly leaves the door open for more revelations from Desmond. When the time is right.

I think you're right about why Desmond didn't recognize Jack at first and did seem to when face to face.
One thing I will surely give Matthew is that he is an excellent actor in showing emotion. Few male actors can cry convincingly and Matt is superb at it. I enjoy him the most when he has a lot of emotion to show.
I think that would be an excellent way to handle Desmond ... having him get away somehow but not die. Let him pop up, like Danielle, when there's need for "more information."
LONG LIVE DESMOND!

That is for sure, that scene in exodus part 1 with him and Sawyer, just great when Sawyer is telling him about his father, I was on the edge of my seat. :w00t:
jbdean 10-05-2005, 01:27 PM And speaking of emotions ... when I rewatched eppy 2, I saw a kind of similarity between Henry's acting and Terry's in that they both are really good at rolling emotions. Where you go from one peak to another or one peak to a valley all in a seamless, even flow.
I noticed that mostly when we see Desmond thinking about the world above and then about the people that crashed and the rafters ... it all just goes up and down with no huge changes, very subtle. I loved that!

I think that is one of my top five moments of the show..it shows Sawyer's transformation from isolationalist/antagonist to someone with a heart. Remember...he knew about Jack being the son of the man in the bar long before he told him. The island...it changes people...some for the good...some for the bad...

That scene was great, I almost cried myself. :crybaby:
jbdean 11-03-2005, 06:57 PM That moment when Desmond realizes that he does know Jack and then finds out about Sarah. That was such a touching moment! Desmond just looked so helpless, trying to console Jack and not knowing what to do or say.
