View Full Version : Taking shifts and the Button
nonyabizwaz 10-12-2005, 11:19 PM I was thinking...now that more people know about the hatch and more will find out about the button, they will be taking their shifts. So...
First...do you guys think the writers will have someone NOT push the button on time? Whether it's because they refuse, or say...just happened to miss it...asleep, using the bathroom...whatever.
Second...if so...who do you think will mess it up? As of this minute, my money's on Charlie.
i_love_dmjgmfna 10-12-2005, 11:22 PM Yeah, I think eventually that someone is gonna mess up, but I'm really not sure who it would be.
nixxy311 10-12-2005, 11:26 PM Could be Charlie - he did say he thought the whole thing was nuts.
Zipdot 10-12-2005, 11:28 PM I think it'll be Locke, and he'll purposely avoid pushing the button. QUOTE ME ON THAT.

Okay, I will. But first I want to know why you say that!
darkpiranha 10-12-2005, 11:39 PM Shannon... because dripping Zombie Walt told her the button was bad.
Peach 10-12-2005, 11:42 PM I would say Charlie too, except that I don't think the island leadership is going to trust him with a shift of his own. He tends to act unpredictably, kind of dictated by his feelings at the moment...which is a problem if your feelings suggest you should see if the island really will blow up :)
I'm not sure if I agree with Zip or not about Locke, but I can see it if he thinks the island is asking it of him.
Vanda 10-12-2005, 11:43 PM I don't know who will mess it up, but I would almost bet that we'll be spending the summer of 2006 debating what is going to happen now that <insert name here> forgot about the button and there's only a few seconds left till <insert disaster here>. ;)

Good Call. I'm buying that theory.
nonyabizwaz 10-12-2005, 11:47 PM I don't know who will mess it up, but I would almost bet that we'll be spending the summer of 2006 debating what is going to happen now that <insert name here> forgot about the button and there's only a few seconds left till <insert disaster here>. ;)
I think you may be the only one who gets this one right!

Don't say that...arggh...cuz that seems exactly what they'd do
Mr. Wicked 10-12-2005, 11:50 PM I vote Charlie will screw it up.
I think there willl be something going on where he'll be alone down there and he'll be back on the heroin -- so he'll nod off like the junkie he is and miss the countdown.
Just as claire walks in.

I see that coming too.
redemption 10-13-2005, 12:07 AM I am glad they are taking shifts...every six hours as Locke has set up for them. Remember Dr. Jack is off with Sayid on another venture....and left the "details" to the Locke and Hurley to figure out. Locke will feel the need to continue Desmond's plea to keep pressing the button until more information is available to disqualify the need. Locke is practical man....with life experience.
jocko 10-13-2005, 12:09 AM I'm 99.99% certain someone will screw it up...
my money's on Charlie (drugs) or Hurley (total revulsion to the numbers).
KyleSBeaver 10-13-2005, 12:10 AM There's no way they can drag the button pushing for the whooole season. Probably til mid-season and we have that huge hiatus over the holidays.

Sure they can. All they have to do is show us someone different pusing the button every two or three episodes just to remind us it's there. It's basically the same thing they did with the hatch last season: show it every few episodes to remind us it's there but it's not a major plot piece until it needs to be.
That said, they could certainly do it over the Christmas hiatus too, and I hope they do. Less time until the big moment, and less time to wait to find out whether or not the island goes boom.
sickotriz 10-13-2005, 12:39 AM Yeah, well, the hatch didn't show up until about midway through the first season.
I don't think the button pushing is going to be the cliff-hanger for this season, I think it will be something that we haven't been shown yet. If anything, the button-push thing may be a hiatus cliff-hanger.
darkpiranha 10-13-2005, 02:14 AM How about Charlie, but listening to music at full blast, forgets about the countdown, and can't hear the alarm. (and maybe stoned, too). I can just imagine the scene, as we cut back and forth from Charlie in the music room to the numbers counting down... flip... flip... flip.... we can barely hear the alarm over the booming of the music. When we are on Charlie, we can't hear the alarm at all.... And I'm sure it will be some really peppy song. Or maybe even You All Everybody. That would be clever.
radical_lost 10-13-2005, 02:15 AM Good Call. I'm buying that theory.
same here, shannon'll probably 'decode' what walt said (in maybe a dream) and freak out and wont wanna push the button.
Quiksilver13oi 10-13-2005, 02:42 AM nah i dont think anyone will screw up. Boone died so the screw-up character is officially gone
gutsdozer 10-13-2005, 03:16 AM Speaking of "taking shifts and the button", who was on button duty while everyone was having Hurley's Island Luau Food Bash?
The beach camp is quite a hike away from the hatch, and all the main characters were shown eating at the beach.
Maybe they put Steve in charge.
artnphotogirl 10-13-2005, 03:56 AM I am starting to wonder why Locke feels he has to "recruit" people to push the button. That strikes me as very odd and unsettling. Sort of like "Come and join my cult of button pushing. It's the cool thing to do. We have a record player. Come on." I have no idea why people listen to him when he is coming off as being a bit cracked in the head and creepy.
I really wanted Hurley to tell him to stuff it when Locke told Hurley that he could not quit his job of rationing the food. Who died and made Locke "Island God"? I actually talked back to the tv right then and said "Ohhh man, Hurley, tell him where to go!"
Yes, I would not be totally trusting Locke and though I find him a fascinating character...I am really questioning his motives.
Nay815 10-13-2005, 04:46 AM Ok, so now that everyone agrees that someone will screw up and not push the button.....what happens when they don't push it?
My guess........zelch.

I think you are on to something with your train of thought..
I've long thought that Locke has a Messiah complex. It became evident when he took Boone through his Shannon experience, Charlie through his withdrawal, and when he gained Walt's trust... he was working hard at drawing others into a position to have to trust him or feel allegiance to him in some way...I've seen this behavior show up in many different ways and I think we will see more of it as time goes on.
Think about that scene when Desmond asked Locke "are you him?"....the look on Locke's face was priceless...
blondefilmgirl 10-13-2005, 05:04 AM I think it'll be Locke, and he'll purposely avoid pushing the button. QUOTE ME ON THAT.
Zip
I'm writing that into TV Guide right now with your name, Zipdot, on the signature. Please stand by. Fame will begin momentarily.

My guess........zelch.
OR....something WILL happen that is actually totally unrelated, or a coincidence, but they all THINK it's because they didn't push the button! Nah, that's lame.
Think about that scene when Desmond asked Locke "are you him?"....the look on Locke's face was priceless...
I agree! Locke was so sure and proud of himself...that he was "him". And his face said, "Finally, you get to meet me. Please bow down and pay homage!"
EllsBells1960 10-13-2005, 07:49 AM I thought Locke said he was going to set up 6 hour shifts of 2 people each - so I would say if one person didn't push the button, then the other person would. (or did I hear him incorrectly - it was when he was talking to Hurley).
wavenest 10-13-2005, 08:17 AM who was pushing the button???????????
I bet Locke misses the button, due to paralysis or Charlie will be there strung out on herion and won't know/remember the numbers!
angra 10-13-2005, 09:17 AM It's going to have to be boone.
yes, I know he's dead. no, I can't guess how. But, come on. If there is a button pushing screwup to be done, it has to be Boone. Who else?
