View Full Version : Poor Hurley...
i_love_dmjgmfna 10-12-2005, 11:27 PM He was so stressed out this episode! So now I'm wondering what happened to make people hate Hurley before. Because he said "I'm not gonna let this happen again!". Was it just the fact that he won the lottery? (Did I just answer my own question?) So, what do you guys think?
Sealpupjd 10-12-2005, 11:29 PM I believe it is because he won the money and kept it a secret from everyone. Did you see his friends face when he found out??
Jami
Mr. Wicked 10-12-2005, 11:31 PM Well the impression they left us with is that his buddy and him would end up splitting regardless of the "best buds 4evr" pact.
He knew money would change the people around him and that he would have to start questioning ppls motives....which is why he asked that chick out before he cashed in his ticket -- to see if she would go out with him before he was rich.
latter on I guess the money did change others and strain his relationships.
BrownEyedGrrl 10-12-2005, 11:32 PM I'm thinking that when people found out he had that much money, they started hitting him up for it, and while he may have given out some at first, he soon realized that it wouldn't stop. And some would think that he'd done more for others, and some would resent him for winning in the first place, and on and on. The Have Nots begrudging The Haves. ;)
Mr. Wicked 10-12-2005, 11:36 PM BrownEyedGrrl is right on.
It's the typical LOTTO LUCK story: You get millions and ppl ask for some money ....so you give ...and then they ask for some more...so you give... eventually you have to cut them off and then you're considered a jerk.
i_love_dmjgmfna 10-12-2005, 11:48 PM Thanks guys! So basically I did answer my own question, huh?
elfdream 10-12-2005, 11:53 PM I have heard stories of lottery winners...how after they win every third cousin twice removed comes out of the woodwork looking for money. There is even a self help group for people who suddenly find themselves wealthy either by winning something or an unexpected inheritance. Its called 'Suddenly rich'. Its a real organization...I know we would all like to have that problem but from what I hear it ain't all roses.

I'll bet.
Mr. Wicked 10-12-2005, 11:59 PM Well....I'd rather be rich and miserable than poor and miserable....
davec 10-13-2005, 12:01 AM Yep, I'd get the best friends money could buy! Jes kidding.
Drive Shaft, more like Suck Shaft! lol
i_love_dmjgmfna 10-13-2005, 12:15 AM Drive Shaft, more like Suck Shaft! lol
I thought that was hilarious. I couldn't tell if Hurley liked Driveshaft or not, though. He didn't really say anything.
kanahina 10-13-2005, 07:19 AM They didn't really seem to know all the words to "You All Everybody"
Was that in the "one hit wonders" section?
MaggieRyanJr 10-13-2005, 08:11 AM Hurley knew his life would change when he won the money. He desperately wanted Starla and Johnny to love him for himself, and he knew that the demands placed on him by all the people who wanted something and wouldn't be satisfied were just too great. He seems like a fragile kind of guy to begin with (thanks, in part, to his witchy mother...) All the man wants is some love!
elfdream 10-13-2005, 04:47 PM I thought it was cool how he still wanted to be friends with the guy in his flashback even though his life was going to change big time.. and how despite Charlie's behavior he still wanted to be friends with him as well.
I like Charlie but I think Hurley should have given a bit of whack on the head with that peanut butter jar as he walked by. Not to hurt him...just to make a point.
BurningStar4 10-13-2005, 06:54 PM Lottery winners also have a rather high suicide rate because they can't deal with the new stresses and people begging for money and the new lifestyle all that money brings them. It's a sudden change in their entire life scheme. I bet people around Hurley just kept asking for money, like he said it would start out small "hey can you spot me a couple bucks..." and then turned into bigger things and when Hurley couldn't provide for so many people he was probably considered a jerk and then people started turning their backs on him, or turning their backs on him because they were jealous that he got so lucky and now he didn't have to work, etc.

I was thinking the same thing.
Michelle Friday 10-14-2005, 12:48 AM Some people have this sense of entitlement, they will pick your bones clean
and leave you in a ditch as long as they got what they wanted.
Rich people will be poor if they allowed every one to manipulate them with
guilt over the money they have. Like Charlie with the food; he treated Hurley
the same way someone treated him over the money, give it up or we cut
you off.
Some people can be happy for others and not feel entitled to have what they
have; it's the ones that are filled with envy and resentment that can't see it
as any thing more than "give it to me".
Hurley was not going to go through that again, and he would have blown the
food pantry up which would have more than likely blown the computer that
does the stupid counting, as well.
Only Rose's compassion made him calm down and think of a better way.
He shared all the food with every one, then suddenly he's a hero.
He wanted that off his shoulders, now the food will be gone and he can be
seen as just one of the group again. Unless someone comes back and
says he should have rationed it out. Ya count win!!

That would have been awsome!
I think Johnny was angry and shocked because Hurley didn't confide in him. They seemed like they were pretty close friends.
