View Full Version : A COMPLETE Episode

I think the reason this episode has struck such a nice chord with people, is because it's a complete story. It had Hurley's dilemma with the food, and by the end we had a conclusion. There was no big "cliffhanger" but we still have much to look forward to next week.

Some would say that Hurley's flashback is repetitive, but I'd disagree. We learned about Hurley's life BEFORE the numbers. And even though he had his problems, he was genuinely happy and didn't want things to change. Now I'm wondering what happened with that girl at the record store...

And we return to the more light hearted moments of the show, even the self reference with Sawyer to Jin, "Why don't you pee on it?" and Hurley's constantly genuinely funny moments. Not to mention the smile on Jack's face while talking to the freshly showered Kate. And my new favorite line, "Great, we can all sue Oceanic together..."

THIS is what a good Lost episode is and I think people have forgotten about that since last season. I feel like the first three eps of the season relied too much on a cliffhanger ending for us to tune in next week. This ep just relied on its good storytelling and trusted we'd come back. And the classic montage ending that I missed! Showing what everyone is up to, showing something mysterious that we'll wonder about, and ending with a revelation. In this case, an expected one (Bernard is alive) but hey, it's official!

Kudos to the Lost team! This is the first episode of the season that's made me feel satisfied and whole.

Any other thoughts? Comments? Agree? Disagree?

I thought the flashback worked really well with this ep as well..It tied in a lot with what Hurley was going through on the show - things not changing.

And we got a Charlie/Hurley connection in the record store :)

THIS is what a good Lost episode is

Exactly. As I told someone after watching it, these are the episodes that make me LOVE Lost. Yes, we love the mythology, but I love the characters more than anything. I love knowing that Charlie loves Claire so much he would get upset over a jar of peanut butter. I love knowing that Hurley wants desperately to have everyone like him so much that he'd be willing to blow up a stockroom full of food. I love knowing that Locke knows more than everyone else and even though it sometimes seems like he's doing something "bad", it almost always turns out good (not always, but a lot of the time). I love knowing that Rose would put away her candy bar for her husband because he has a sweettooth and she knows he's okay. I love knowing that, despite her something rough exterior, Shannon would feed Vincent some of her own food.

THAT'S Lost. The characters. That's why I love this show. Because of Hurley and Locke and Jack and Charlie and Sun, etc. etc.

I cracked up when his friend called them DRIVESUCK!

I will probably get hung out to dry, but I must totally agree with them on that one. As if that song would ever make the TOP 40.

I do agree with the original post. I feel as though there was a sense of completeness (if that is a word). It left me feeling warm and bubbly...only makes me scared for next week???

I think they finally returned to the format that made LOST so good last season: character development using an interrelated backstory and frontstory.

I so agree. It had its own mini arc. It seemed like it almost had a nice period mark at the end of the episode...except of course for the tail people.

Plus it was reminscient of season one and Hurley with the cd player. Had the happy go lucky feel at the end those episodes would sometimes have.

Did he call them DRIVESUCK? I could have sworn he said "Driveshaft? More like SUCKshaft!"

I'm probably wrong, since my version sounds almost too dirty for tv!

...and by the end we had a conclusion.

Exactly what made it work so well for me, too! Plus, they episode didn't flashback to moments from the week before for lengthy periods of time... AND, no double dipping for cliff-hangers which I consider to be the lamest and weakest Lost moment of all time... Sure, there was some good stuff...

But, tonight's episode was full... Or as, you've said: "COMPLETE"!

And for some reason, I LOVE Hurley's dream sequence at the beginning. It's just so weird, Jin is speaking so casually, and Hurley's so laid back...and then the giant chicken appears and nobody really even notices...

Have a Cluckity Cluck Day!

Great post!

I, too, came away feeling like this was a really GREAT episode. The classic musical montage at the end... very reminiscent of the early Season 1 episodes that really got me (and no doubt many) people into this amazing series.

So many great moments, but I think my favourite one was Bernard's introduction. His truly genuine and heartful concern for Rose----as displayed on his face and heard in his voice----shows just how warm and caring their relationship is. And knowing what we know about Rose and her unshaken faith that her husband survived the crash means their reunion will be a momentous one.

And how great was it to see Rose again after such a long leave! Truly a great character. The heart and soul of the show, in my opinion.

Well...as I said in other threads...I DO really love this episode, and I personally find these types of Lost episodes to be more fulfilling than the more action packed ones which continue into the next week.

BUT...I don't really think every episode needs to be 'complete' in the sense that the plot is mostly tied up at the end. Raised by Another and All the Best Cowboys were fabulous episodes which were really a continuation of the same crisis.

I think it's just that it seems like a long time since we've had an episode that existed by itself...and we were really missing it ;)

Then why am I constantly singing it (even though the song only has what - 3 lines??) Not much different than some of the other crap out these days. You have to admit it's catchy :)

Yeah, this was a good episode... but every episode of Lost is a good episode to me. The only bad part is when it ends... and you know you have a week to wait for the next one.

Hey, did anyone else hear it sound like Hurley and his friend were singing "You ARE everybody" instead of "You ALL everybody"? That's what it sounded like they were saying to me. Maybe I misheard, but I found it funny because my friends used to always say "ARE" instead of "ALL".

They've been able to get back to a more character-driven storyline. We've spent the past several episodes on information overload with all the hatch-happenings and the introduction of new characters. Now the show can settle back in to a more "leisurely" pace of getting back to individual character's stories, and their backstory influences on their actions and reactions on the island.

Undoubtedly. It was so refreshing to have that back. Those instrumental-no dialogue endings always bring me on the verge of tears. It really makes you realize that even for a single moment, the seemingly worst situation in the world can feel like paradise to them.

Full episode indeed, especially since they didn't spend half the episode recapping. It felt like a mini-movie and I cannot wait for more. They're doing a fabulous job at expanding the storylines and introducing new characters, without losing touch with those that have already been established.

I can breathe a sigh of relief and sleep (somewhat) peacefully tonight. I <3 LOST.

While I enjoyed the change of pace in the last few episodes, I glad we're "home" again too.
I like that the episode came full circle: we found out some more about Hurley, he had some personal growth on the island, the plot got moved forward a bit but there were no huge revelations, and I feel there was a little something for everyone (a PB&J scene here, a Jate scene there, some wise Locke and some sarcastic Sawyer. It was a veritable smorgasbord of tasty character bits! )

Not to mention the fact that I spent the whole time LMAO! Jorge is a genius and the writers write to his strengths, and I love them all to bits! (And even though I knew that scene with Bernard was bound to happen sooner or later, I was really impressed with the emotional impact it still had.)

I, too, appreciated the completeness of this episode as well. We got to see some of the softer sides of people we don't normally see too - such as Shannon helping Claire tell Sun about the bottle and the look on Sawyer's face when he realized who Bernard was was heart-rending. I think we're going to find that Sawyer and Jack end up having much more in common than they (or we) ever thought. He was as disbelieving in what was going on around him this week as Jack was in the past weeks.
Hurley was priceless tonight. It's good to know that he had wisdom before he ever came to the island or even won the lottery for that matter. He knew that it was going to change everything and everyone around him when he cashed in that ticket and just wanted a normal life for a little while before he got the loads of money. How priceless was it that his boss, Randy, ended up working for him later. I wonder if either of them ever even knew that? Hurley and Charlie was one of the best pairs ever on TV and they were great tonight. I just wish that Charlie would believe Hurley about the money. Maybe some day, Hurley will be able to convince him.
My husband and I laughed ourself silly over Jack saying Hey to Kate when he found her in the shower, Sawyer calling Ana "Rambina" and Hurley and his friend singing "You All Everybody". :roflmao:
And Rose was wonderful as usual. I will probably use a whole roll of paper towels to mop the tears that will flow if she's finally reunited with Bernard.
I told my husband as we were watching the ending tonight that it was about time everyone was able to relax and unwind. They all have been needing it for quite some time.Next week's show looks like it will be another great episode too and I can hardly wait!!!

Excuse me, but have you ever heard "I Hate Everything About You" by Three Days Grace? If you have, you'd understand why I ask.

As for thsi episode, by far the best of the season and up there with one of the best LOST episodes of all time. My one nitpick was the Claire/Shannon/Sun stuff with the bottle seemed like the writer's saying, "Hey, we need these three characters in the episode." I mean, are Claire and Shannon even friends that Claire would go to Shannon for advice? Although I suppose at this point Shannon would be the only one around to go to (besides Steve).

I still think the first two episodes should have been the season finale, the third should have been the season premiere, making this episode the second of the season. Of course, the first really good episode of season one was also episode four. Coincidence? I think not.

I think you're right and then they started making up lyrics and I swear I heard Hurley put the word "stupid" in there somewhere. LOL

She'll be back. She's a very talented young actress. There's no way they would have cast her in that role if it were only for that one scene. Of course, I say the same thing about the guy from T2 in Sawyer's second flashback.

Yeah I love the how the show's writers cast actors like Robert Patrick (the guy from T2), and the Peg Bundy actress, Hurley's friend in the flashback (wasn't he in that Hustle and Flow movie?), and the girl Hurley likes (who is a babe!). It's great to see film actors on TV shows.

Guys, JJ helped create this show, but he has very little to do with writing it and guiding its story these days. Better to give credit to the authors of the script (Kitsis and Horowitz) and the showrunners (Lindelof and Cuse.)

I also love the cameos. It really suggests that some solid Hollywood types are anxious to be a part of this show. And it makes you wonder of the cameos to come. DJ Qualls was great and it is quite true that Starla is way damn hot. I liked that she liked Hugo. It meant a lot to know that Hugo was a solid guy in her eyes. I am anxious to know what became of that potential relationship. Hopefully his bad karma didnt injure her but it would seem that she is no longer a part of his life....or is she...? I love the Hurley story. I love that Charlie mocks Hurley for "lying" about his money. It brings more laughs and smiles than the other stoyrylines and to be honest I identify with him the most. Had I been the one that found the golf clubs, I definitely would have forged out that golf course...

I agree there. I think JJ's been busy working on Mission Impossible 3. But who knows, he may have picthed the idea a while ago.

Regardless, Lost is definitely a group effort.

I like what everyone had to say about this episode. It was a nice break from the nail-biting suspense of episodes one through three. One thing I like about the few television shows I've watched {such as Buffy} is that they include those episodes that are vaguely plot-driven but focus more on lighthearted humour and character development. This episode was wonderful with Hurley's 'cluck you', his ladyfriend, and the ending with all the food. The peanut butter moment made me absolutely giddy, as I'd been talking about the idea of it just an hour before the show. Although I would have liked to have seen Hurley in the mental hospital, I'm sure that's coming eventually. Meanwhile, I didn't find the flashbacks repetitive at all. I thought they were really insightful into Hurley's character, to understanding the sort of thing he went through when he won the lottery, and how the food situation on the island was mirroring that. However, I was kind of unimpressed with Locke's reaction to Hurley, as he is usually more intuitive than that. And it was in fact Jack who told Hurley to do what he needed to do. Hmm.

I too, enjoyed this episode. While Hurley may seem to be a simple man, it showed his true wisdom. By distributing the food in this way, he was able to provide the Lostaways with far more enjoyment than if the food had been rationed out. And pleasure is something that is definetely in short supply on the island. Like with the golf course, he seems to have his finger on what is needed to maintain morale. I have a hard time thinking about this episode without getting a happy grin on my face.

Yeah, I loved it when Rose said something along the lines of..."You're the only one on this island that just about everyone likes."

I mean, the guy is even "friends" with Danielle. That takes some doin'.

I thought the scene where Hugo explains to Rose why he has to blow up the food supply was done beautifully. Having him speak words in the present while they show when his buddy found out he had won...those words were really addressing what happened then.

Great episode and I'm looking forward to how Season 2 will unfold!

And though we all knew that guy was going to be Bernard, it was still really moving and heat touching. I say kudos to that actor.
