View Full Version : Hurley at the gas station
EmptyJar 10-12-2005, 11:55 PM Hey anyone got screen caps to compare here...
remember the one eppy where jin was delivering the message and hurley was on tv... in a vehicle... surrounded by reporters... etc etc
i'm not 100% because i dont remember what car/van/etc. he was in on the tv but could this be that same scene at the gas station?? haha i know i wouldn't be surprised if it was..
and also... how did the store owner know it was him, i was under the impression hurley did not make the claim yet.. kinda funny that he never really used the numbers to get the money himself, the shopkeeper dude pointed him out as the winner. it fits with him not wanting things to change, and losing his best friend was i guess the start of his bad luck...
Monkey 10-13-2005, 12:03 AM I thought when Hurlley was on Korean TV it was during the day time and he was in a smaller car.
I thought it was bull that the clerk knew he sold that ticket to Hurley...how many tickets does he sell a day?
i_love_dmjgmfna 10-13-2005, 12:08 AM Yeah, that's not the same interview. The interview on Korean TV was during the daytime, and anyway, in that interview, Hurley seemed alot happier.
LuckyMe 10-13-2005, 12:09 AM I thought Hurley was on TV getting arrested. Wasn't it when they thought he was a drug dealer?
Ray66 10-13-2005, 12:12 AM When Jin went to beat up the guy the TV was playing showing Hurley getting into a small blue car. TV had a ticker at the bottome like stock or news but in Korean.
brewmeone 10-13-2005, 12:30 AM I thought it was bull that the clerk knew he sold that ticket to Hurley...how many tickets does he sell a day?
Probably tons... but when a person like Hurley comes in and orders one ticket with a specific set of numbers... it could be memorable. What if Hurley had played the same numbers every week since he was released from the mental hospital? Perhaps the clerk was used to Hurely buying the ticket(s).
eatingt00thpaste 10-13-2005, 12:33 AM I think vendors of lottery tickets have a sort of record of the numbers played, and the date and the time. Maybe he did remember. I'm pretty good with faces and such. I work part-time at a movie theatre and I can remember what certain people order at the concessions stand, particularly if their appearance is, well, memorable. Hurley is pretty memorable, you have to admit.
nicole94 10-13-2005, 01:06 AM Does anyone have a screencap of the license plate of the van as it pulls up to the pump? I can't get my Tivo to stop at the right time when the light hits it. It looks like it starts with 15.......
Michelle Friday 10-13-2005, 01:10 AM I thought is sad that his friend had that look on his face. I would have been
jumping up and down if my friend was pointed out as the winner! I would
have said "why didn't you tell me" but still happy for him.

I thought the same thing! The friend looked mad or something...
wavenest 10-13-2005, 07:16 AM he was probably upset that Hurley would keep it from him.
kanahina 10-13-2005, 07:21 AM okay, but still...I'd be happy if it was my friend... and then I'd be like "Why didn't you tell me?"
MaggieRyanJr 10-13-2005, 08:03 AM I think there were a lot of conflicting emotions in Johnny. Disappointed that Hurley did not confide in him. Fear that his friendship with Hurley would change after this. Jealousy that Hurley had escaped from the cycle of dead end jobs, and maybe a premonition that all would not be well after this point...
ELTaino74 10-13-2005, 08:25 AM Yeah definitely not the same shot. Hurley on TV from last season

DarkTeach 10-13-2005, 08:52 AM I can understand why he was upset - Hurley quit the job at Mr. Clucks knoing he didn't need it anymore... Johnny, on the ohter hand, quit thinking he and Hugo would goof off the day and then go find another job together. I think he was disappointed that Hugo hadn't told him back at Mr. Clucks the reason WHY he'd been able to quit, and encourage him not to. Now Hugo's go all this money and Johnny has nothing.. I'd be a bit disappointed/sad.
heatherblue 10-13-2005, 09:14 AM There was one problem I had with this. Unless the gas attendant only sold 1 lottery ticket (extremely hard to believe) he would have no idea who had the winning ticket. All he would know from the lottery commission is that the winning ticket was sold at his station.

Brilliant observation. It's likely he'd remember selling A ticket to Hurley (he kind of stands out in a crowd), but just how does he know he sold THE ticket to Hurley? Curiouser and curiouser.....
Islandgurl 10-13-2005, 09:44 AM Hurley probably goes to that station everyday and "knows" the clerk. I know I do the same thing during the week I stop and get my coffee at the same station and I know the workers on that shift, we say hi and make small talk. So i think if I was a lottery player one of the girls would proabably know my numbers. Hurley didn't like change so maybe he is a creature of habit like me! I love Hurley!

I agree, I would think that the clerk would remember him coming in there, especially if he was a regular, but there is no way he would know that he had the winning ticket.
I think Hurley said something, in one of the shows past, that he went into the store for a buritto, and decided on a whim to play the numbers. He alluded to the fact that he did it just this once. Tons of people come in and play the lotto, how would the clerk remember that HE played the winning numbers? Please, the clerk would have forgotten the numbers the minute Hurley walked out the door.
In high school, I worked as a mini mart clerk. Some of the clerks even knew the regulars lotto numbers by heart and had their tickets ready for them as soon as they entered the store. I never got to that point but I did know who the regulars were and what they would usually buy. I realize that Hurley bought the ticket on a whim but if he was a regular, it would be memorable for the clerk. If one of your regulars comes in and buys something different, you may remember that more clearly.

Right, so if Hurley was a regular, he would have remembered that Hurley bought a lottery ticket. But so did tons of other people during the course of that week. I just don't see him remembering what numbers Hurley would have picked. He probably didn't even know the store sold a winning lottery ticket until the lottery commision told him.
Baileysdad 10-13-2005, 10:18 AM True...but I do believe Hurley did it on a whim...
His friend's reaction was seeing his normal closed world that you could set a watch by totally change in front of his eyes and made him realize he was no longer in the same world as his burly friend...however...if it were me..I would take care of those closest to me with jobs at my businesses or charities or as an advisor. I think Hurley is so loyal he would have done that...
One more thing I was wondering, did anyone happen to see any of the numbers around the gas station? Perhaps on the signs that show how much the gas costs? Or advertisements in the window of the store? It's something I thought of after I watched the episode and haven't had a chance to rewatch it.
To clear up a little about what I posted earlier, what I recall from being a mini mart clerk was that when one of the regulars came in and bought something different, it always struck me and was something I tended to remember. I do agree that remembering the exact numbers would be awful difficult for the clerk to remember. Maybe Hurley spouted the numbers off so quickly and effortlessly, it struck the clerk as significant. Of course, this is all assuming that Hurley is a regular. He might not be.
I'm just trying to give some suggestions as to why the clerk would remember Hurley being the one who holds the winning ticket because it does seem quite unlikely.
Debisobsessed 10-13-2005, 11:05 AM You got the impression that Hurley was a regular customer at this gas station. If he never bought a lottery ticket in the past, and suddenly bought one with specific numbers, the clerk may remember. Hurley is very memorable. I sold lottery tickets for a while, and I remembered some of the regular's numbers. I still do 15 years later.
