Help! I'm totally blanking out - what was in the bottle that Claire found? I didn't understand why Sun was so upset. I recall everyone putting personal messages in the bottle, but not the specifics.

Yeah, the raftaways were taking the messages in the bottle back to civilization. The bottle washing up suggested that something had happened to the raft, and therefore Jin. It was so sad when Sun buried the bottle :(

The bottle was on the raft. If the bottle washed back to shore, it most likely means something bad happened to the raft. But the folks on the island don't know what happened. They'll probably assume the worst, unless Rose can check on other people's husbands, too. :)

Now she knows the raft was lost at sea. She buried it, I assume, so the other survivors wouldn't lose faith.

because there were personal messages in the bottle, and the bottle went on the raft.
Ergo, if the bottle washes up on shore...something bad must have happened to the raft.

Remember, the lostaways don't know that walt was kidnapped, that Jin, Sawyer, and Michael are prisoners, they have been incommunicado since the raft pushed off.
