Please help with this question: Who was manning the hatch while the survivors had their feast on the beach?

Thanks.

I did not see Sayid, so I'm assuming he was the one manning the hatch. Could be wrong though... Im gonna have to watch that again. :)

It didn't show, but it could have been anyone who wasn't on the beach.

Or maybe someone popped the numbers in, pushed execute and ran down to the beach to party for a few minutes and ran back.

Locke??

Sayid and Locke were both shown.

The hatch is a couple miles from the beach I believe, so I doubt Hurley could've walked there, passed out all the food, then walked back in enough time.

I think they either made a continuity error, or they just had a redshirt do it. My money's on Steve. "Sorry dude, it's your turn. We'll all be pigging out on the beach without you if anything goes wrong."

average walking speed for an average man is 3 miles per hour. That makes a 4 mile round trip (which personally I believe is a bit long, since I think the hatch is more like 1 1/2 miles from the beach) about 1 hour and 20 minutes ... well within the 1 hour 48 minute countdown.

I'm going with Shannon...or a redshirt. I assume the two person shifts haven't started yet.

I take that back! She was on the beach with the dog. (Thank God for the Edit button!)

I doubt Hurley could carry the entire contents of the pantry back for the picnic, so whoever was manning the button was probably a) a loner and b) got the run of what was left in the pantry to compensate for missing the party.

Maybe two people each went to half the party? Locke for the first half, Sayid for the second? I wondered the same, myself.

This is a very interesting question.

Shannon was at the party, she gave Vincent a dog cookie.

Jack and Kate were making goo goo eyes at each other.

Sayid was there, smiling, as was Locke, and Hurley was passing out the food.

Rose put the candy bar in her pocket, and Charlie - the only other person whom we know also knows about the hatch was sharing peanut butter with "Little Mama".

So unless they told somebody new about the job - which Jack apparently didn't want to do yet - the hatch is unmanned and the island is doomed!

I wondered this myself when watching the episode. I'm of the opinion that the hatch is close enough that everyone can be on the beach for a while (after JUST pushing the button) and get back in time to push the button.

Does anyone have conclusive evidence from an episode how far the hatch is from the beach? I think all we actually know is how far the hatch is from the caves... did they ever say how far apart the beach and caves are?

For a long while I thought the hatch was four miles from the beach (because that's how far Boone is from camp when Locke ties him up). But upon rewatching that scene, I'm pretty sure he's NOT tied up at the hatch, for two reasons. First, the area doesn't look the same and you can't see the hatch. Second, if they were at the hatch, Locke wouldn't have to tell Boone how to get back, since Boone knows how to get to the hatch (and presumably back).

So really, we don't know much about the hatch's location relative to the beach. Just that Kate can leave the hatch at a run at 85 minutes left in the countdown and show back up there with Sayid and Hurley (who isn't going to be going too fast, most likely), at around 25-30 minutes left in the countdown. That's an hour. If we assume she goes faster on the way to the beach (because of Hurley), we could estimate maybe 25 minutes to the beach and 35 back. If we say Kate goes an average speed as 3 miles an hour, then the hatch is about 1.25 miles from the beach. About.

In that case, someone could theoretically leave the beach in time to get back and push the button, as long as they don't leave too late. Maybe Michael was wrong about the usefulness of a watch on the island. :p

Hey, aren't you supposed to be punching in the numbers? No, we switched shifts, remember? Maybe a temp?

It was Sceve. LOL

No, I think Sceve was hogging all of the chips and dude that is wrong!

The hatch is not close to the beach or the caves. One of the characters made mention of it specifically in one of the episodes this season, but I'm pulling a total brain fart right now.

Maybe Des and Rosseau are taking a turn at it.
