View Full Version : Thoughts on Desmond
rpwalters 11-07-2005, 04:03 PM Hello everyone, this is my first real post here. I have to say that Desmond is my favorite character, which is hard to say given that he has hardly ever been in the show.
Mainly, I find it intriguing to consider his character's situation down in the hatch and what motivates him. I will never in my entire life forget watching the season opener this season. I would love to hear what some other people thought during the first 3 minutes or so. I thought it was a flashback for Sawyer or something from a long time ago or someone's roommate or something from the Island. I thought the injection was maybe steroids since the guy seemed like quite the exercise enthusiast. Then I heard the kaboom and thought, "Holy Crap, this is the friggin' hatch we're seeing". Never has a TV show or Movie so completely floored me because it created so many questions (how does this guy have running water, a washer and a dryer, a record player, etc.) I knew the minute I heard the boom that it was the hatch, however (as I'm sure many others did).
I have Season One on DVD and I watch various episodes from time-to-time and quite often I think, someone is underground hitting a button every 108 minutes as we speak.
My entire interest in Lost at the moment is pretty much centered around the hatch and how Desmond became associated with it (beyond what Desmond told Jack, at least). I really hope there is some payoff from the writers on this.
Oh... and by the way... The End!
Save The Humans 11-07-2005, 08:45 PM Oh... and by the way... The End!
But not of Desmond! He'll be back!
rpwalters 11-07-2005, 08:53 PM But not of Desmond! He'll be back!
Yes, thankfully the general consensus seems to say so!
barbarella2 11-07-2005, 08:54 PM First of all, rpwalters, welcome to the 'Lage!! You'll find you are in very good company as fan of Desmond, and for a rarely seen character he has a HUGE and wildly enthusiastic following.
I'm right with you as far as the impact of the first show this season. I absolutely loved the original pilot of the show, and watched the first few episodes, then life took over and I missed a few and I figured it was like the show "24" -- I'd missed so much I'd never get caught up. Then I decided I'd pick it up again in the 2nd season. Like you, I was hooked in the first 3 minutes by Desmond's character, and I've become a freakishly loyal fan ever since. (Just bought season 1 on DVD and I'm half way thru it already. What a FANTASTIC show!!!).
Enjoy your journey through the overwhelming number of threads and posts devoted to Season 2, Desmond, Desmond-centric episodes, Henry Ian Cusick (the fine, fine actor who portrays him), and his rabid fans. Don't forget to eat and shower once in a while....;)
See you in another life, yeah?
eehee 11-09-2005, 02:34 PM My entire interest in Lost at the moment is pretty much centered around the hatch and how Desmond became associated with it (beyond what Desmond told Jack, at least). I really hope there is some payoff from the writers on this.
Me too!!! Finding Desmond in the hatch totally overshadowed the revelation that the tailies were alive for me. I was watching them thinking yeah, that's great, but where did Desmond go?
I was disappointed by the finale last year (too long, yet another person got kidnapped, etc) but still couldn't wait to see how this season would start. And I was completely floored. My husband and I were looking at each other like are we sure we turned to the right channel? Then the boom came and all our assumptions about what we were seeing then and everything we'd seen before fell apart. I love having that type of experience!! It felt exactly like when we first saw Neo encased in his battery cell in The Matrix.
Totally amazing :p
Save The Humans 11-10-2005, 12:09 AM LOVE your avatar, barbarella2! :D
Had to come over here and cool off from my  about tonight's eppy at my other sites! Here, there's nothing but Desmond love, and I feel better!
Now, more than ever, he needs to come back! Things will get explosive in eppys to come. The Tailers will NOT be welcomed by Our Castaways! (Well, except for Bernard!) James is at death's door. The Others are out there! There will be little to smile about, much less laugh about. We need Desmond to come and lift us up a bit! Please? All many of us can do right now is  and !
My #1 thought on Desmond tonight is that he was, and would again be, a breath of fresh air on this show! We need POSITIVE things to hold on to, as things get worse and worse this season! Jin/Sun and Bernard/Rose reunions will help. I suppose Charlie/Hurley comic relief will help (though it's questionable how much about Charlie is gonna be funny anymore). But Desmond! He has hopefulness going for him. Even when he ran from what he saw as imminent doom, he hoped he could get far enough away to not get a direct hit! And he was willing to stop, to reach out to Jack--if the stubborn fellow would just have LET him!
Desmond's a drink of water in the desert! BRING HIM BACK!
barbarella2 11-11-2005, 02:32 PM LOVE your avatar, barbarella2! :D
Hey, thanks! It's my first one. I seriously need to brush up on Photoshop, but I enjoyed doing it. It's also one of my favourite Desmond lines.
Yes, I too was lamenting the fact that Abandoned was completely Desmond-free. I still enjoyed it, but I had no trouble sleeping, like before! :wink1: I anxiously await his return to the show. You've got to think the writers are paying attention to the groundswell of support this rather tertiary character has, and they'll develop some decent plot lines for him.
I, myself, am not convinced of the sincerity of Desmond's benevolence towards Jack. There was something odd about their meeting in the stadium, and I think there is MUCH more about this character that has yet to be revealed and the backstory between him and Jack. You've got to believe Desmond is connected to at least one or two other characters. I would have thought Locke, given his miraculous recovery from paralysis (...like Sarah), but neither seemed to recognize each other in the Hatch. Although, maybe Desmond asking Locke "Are you him?" was hinting at some prior connection....?
Can't wait for the story to unravel.
Cheers
gaffa 11-14-2005, 09:24 PM ya, I gotta say, I'm definitely STILL thinking about Desmond. So far I think he is THE most intriguing character. Henry Ian Cusak has a lot to do with it. He was quite convincing and just very human.
I'm really dying to see him make his comeback. I NEED TO KNOW MORE!
Save The Humans 11-15-2005, 01:49 AM If the Creative Team could've had Claire's psychic do a reading for them, they'd have known in advance that HIC was gonna make Desmond the BEST character to come on to LOST since the Pilot eppy! They'd also have known what a disaster Ms. Rodriguez would be as Ana Lucia. Knowing that, HIC would be LOST's newest regular cast member, and MR would be disappearing into the jungle!
So where's the good psychic when you need him? :frown:
SenatorKent 10-12-2006, 03:01 PM It'll be interesting to see how he integrates into the group this season
jbdean 10-13-2006, 07:18 PM It will indeed. I'm really excited to see how he will interact with them sober. ;)

mygoodeye 10-15-2006, 07:08 AM i bet he has a real tought time integrating in the grouop. he's not really been around a huge bunch of people in years. he might hang out with one or two people (maybe Locke) and just remain on the fringe.
well, if i was writing Desmond this season, that's how i'd do it.
who knows. he might be the life of the camp:rolleyes:

He showed really excellent social skills in his FBs so far, so here's to hoping! But as you said, he hasn't been around this many people in years...
jbdean 10-15-2006, 05:21 PM I think he'll want to be part of the group, not having had that in a long time. But I think he might avoid those with relationships (like Sun and Jin, Claire and Charlie) as it might be too painful to watch them being together since his Penny isn't there.
Save The Humans 10-16-2006, 12:38 AM Desmond has shown himself to be both self-contained AND sociable. So it'll probably be a bit of both.
I'd say that large group activity ain't his thing (boot camp and maybe soccer team would be an exception). But the lostaways don't seem to do much as a large group anyway, so that shouldn't be a problem for him. He may have to help rally the group as a whole, though--they'll have to work together to prepare defenses against The Others!

Just to ease the tension, you know? And since Jack and Kate are Otherwise occupied, Hurley has no one to play against. :frown:
Save The Humans 10-16-2006, 03:03 AM Another agree to disagree moment, Jane!
As dense as these lostaways have been during this series, the news that The Others have J/J/K, there's some pretty powerful EMT forces bopping around the Island (even if they HAVE been relieved for the moment), and some other factors we can talk about after Wednesday's eppy (YAY! I've avoided spoiler font!). . .
With all these majorly disturbing factors happening, I think that even these lostaways will be properly cowed and terrified. No one's gonna be trotting off to Hurley's golf course "to let off some steam." No one's gonna be going anywhere. THEY might grab them if they do! Heck, even expeditions to get water from the caves will probably be composed a group of at least a half-dozen people, some armed!
Any "letting off steam" activities--if there are any--will be held at, or very close to, the beach from now on.
Only Locke, Sayid, and Desmond (Charlie & Hurley, maybe, since they'll have D/L/S for protection) are likely to be setting out any distance--and when they do, it'll not be for R & R! Oh, and Eko might join them, if he's fit enough to do so. (All these actors are in opening regular cast credits, so it's safe to acknowledge their presence, thank goodness!)
Sorry, Jane. It'd be nice to have lighthearted moments again, like we did in the first two seasons. But the current situation on the Island simply precludes that! :sob:

FWIW, my thoughts on Desmond and Hurley playing golf were what I'd like to see sometime in S3 ... not in the next few eppys before they begin again after the first 6. ;)
HIMluv 10-18-2006, 03:56 AM Hello.
I'm new here, and figured that, what with my adoration of a particular Scotsman, what better place to start?
I watched the entire season two on DVD this weekend, and halfway through I was saying, "What about Desmond? Where did he go?"
So now I've caught myself up on all things 'Lost' and am counting down until Wednesday's episode!!
I love Desmond; both the more light hearted, sort of whimisical guy we've seen in flashbacks and the super intense, slightly unstable man of the Hatch.
He's become my favorite more quickly than any other character... and I'm not sure I could explain why.....
But perhaps, just perhaps, that has somethin' to do with it, yeah?
Anyway, lookin' forward to posting more here, and elsewhere!
The Fuselage is pretty impressive!

Well it came and went :frown: but my thoughts on Desmond is that he's still fabulous, still wonderful and still a vital asset for the Losties. I think that we're going to see great things from him!
Bella_Harmon 11-27-2006, 02:54 PM Hallo there!
What I could say? I never thought that Not one of the original Losties could be my favourite character before I watch Season 2 finale. I liked Desmond from the first moment I saw him. But I did not know character yet. It was just strange intriguing and charismatic Man who was discovered in the hatch by Losties.
But After I've learned a lot about him during his FB, it just blew me away. Strange feeling of discovering something truly new and unusual! I can not express it well enough, cause English is not my own language :(
And Now I just can't imagine LOST without Desmond. It wouldn't be LOST without him.. :)

Same here. I was very much into Lost before him, but since he came to the show, somehow the whole thing is about him now :) It's like it was a different show I'm watching. S1 sucked me in, turned me into a fan. But S2 and Desmond made a maniac out of me, LOL

And I am also very happy that he's played by Ian. I might never have discovered him otherwise (as I never watched 24 until he was on). And he is, LL, hands down, the Greatest Actor Ever!

I never watched "LOST," until I heard about Ian appearing on the show from another website (I was a fan from GoJo). Likewise, I never watched "24," until I learned via another website that Ian would appear on it. Well, it sounds like six degrees of separation.

I think you are the very first person I know that doesn't know Ian from Lost. So you have seen him in The Film first? I wonder if you have a different way of seeing him than we do? I dunno what I mean, so don't even ask :21:
Bella_Harmon 12-08-2006, 01:52 PM I saw him on Taggart first :)
Alkhara 12-08-2006, 05:29 PM He's done a fair bit of UK TV.
I don't normally 'do' TV all that much (I prefer movies) so most of it passed me by. Going back a few years, I did enjoy the Book Group, although I thought series 1 was better, and HIC was in series 2!
Lost is the only TV shows in years that I watch regularly, or should I say religiously! I can remember seeing the pilot and thinking how good it was - high production values, etc, - but it honestly took me a few eps to really get hooked.

Ah, great to see there are more Des adorers here! I feel at home already!
I'm anxious for Season 3 to return from hiatus because Des was not as prominent in the first 6 episodes as I had expected after the S2 finale.
I don't read spoilers - but I am guessing he will get one of the first flashbacks come 2007. At least, I'm hoping! I love how he is such an integral character now. Indeed, this show is all about him - and I'm loving it!

I don't read spoilers - but I am guessing he will get one of the first flashbacks come 2007. At least, I'm hoping! I love how he is such an integral character now. Indeed, this show is all about him - and I'm loving it!
Hi :wavey:, PennyKnows, welcome to our lovely Desmondite bunch. My guess is you'll love it here
I may be wrong about this ... but I thought that we had been told that Penny would be appearing this season. I think it's more likely to be in a f/b. I don't think we'll see her 'in the flesh' for a loooooonnngg time.
Yes, you may be right. Unless she is already on the island, as some people believe
Bella_Harmon 12-10-2006, 11:23 AM Unless she is already on the island, as some people believe
who knows... May it be that BIG "jump shark" moment we expect in the middle of this season?
Lea_Lost 12-10-2006, 12:18 PM who knows... May it be that BIG "jump shark" moment we expect in the middle of this season?
It would certainly would have my jaw drop alright! Imagine the irony of it!
Alkhara 12-10-2006, 02:01 PM Yes, you may be right. Unless she is already on the island, as some people believe
Yeah, but it's a bit strange for her to be looking for the island if she's already there.
Lea_Lost 12-10-2006, 04:34 PM Yeah, but it's a bit strange for her to be looking for the island if she's already there.
Who's to say she was looking for the island? All they said was "we found it". We don't know what it was.
PennyKnows 12-10-2006, 05:17 PM Already on the island? That's a Penny theory I haven't heard!!!
I suppose its more likely Des's flashback will show Penny as not many days have gone by since the S2 finale. Let's just hope for two Des' flashback epis in the spring - its possible IMHO - especially since so many of the 'old' characters are dead now.
Save The Humans 12-10-2006, 07:17 PM but it honestly took me a few eps to really get hooked.
Better late than never, Ley!

The more Des the better as far as I'm concerned and I am so anxious to learn more about him and Penny. He will, I'll bet, have the best history of all the characters by the time we get to know his.
Desmond David Hume 01-04-2007, 12:33 PM  I can't wait to see another des flashback :desmond:

Hello, DDH! A fan I presume?
:Welcome: to the Desmond board! Hope you'll like it here just as much as we do! ;)
Save The Humans 01-04-2007, 04:27 PM :nono:, MerryMac!
That needs to be spoiler-fonted! ;)
DDH--we have two threads at the Ships board: Despenny (for our fave couple!) and The Desmond Clan. We  new members! (Hint, hint!)
Diesels Blitz 05-27-2007, 01:18 AM Desmond is definitely one of my top 3 favorite characters ever since he was introduced in season 2. I love both scenes from the season 2 opener: 1) the one showing him just going through the motions of a typical day for him, and 2) when Jack realized he knew Desmond from somewhere. Oh yeah, that whole stadium scene was great too!
I must say if I can have one wish for Lost, it would be for Desmond and Penny to be reunited. I want that more than anything.

I must say if I can have one wish for Lost, it would be for Desmond and Penny to be reunited. I want that more than anything.Desmond was fantastic from the very start, wasn't he? I was smitten the moment I saw him with Jack in the stadium. I just knew he had to be vital to the story. Ian is such a fantastic actor that in just those few moments I knew he was a big deal for the storyline and it's proven to be so.
We all want Des and Penny reunited! Theirs is a true love story if ever there was one. So different from the hormonally driven Kate/Jack/Sawyer (now Juliet) love mess. Come on over to the DesPenny Ship! We all want that for them over there! (Link's in my siggy.)
Diesels Blitz 05-28-2007, 01:03 AM Desmond was fantastic from the very start, wasn't he?
He most definitely was! Everytime I listen to "Make Your Own Kind of Music," I always think of Desmond in the Swan hatch.

I agree about Des and Penny being a true love story. I'm glad she knows Desmond is on an island and is doing fine. I want them to be reunited so bad! He better ask her to marry him this time. ;) I'll have to stop by the DesPenny Ship sometime soon.
hakwam 05-29-2007, 12:25 AM Wow, he's now better than Locke, Desmond is moving to be the best character, then again he is the only character with superpowers (something tells me he still can see the future, how did he saw Locke's speech)
Corey Chaos 06-04-2007, 12:43 PM ahhhh Des is so great. so so wonderful. At first Charlie was my favourite character, but nowww Desmond takes the cake.
LostKitty 06-05-2007, 10:47 AM Desmond takes the cake and the whole buffet table!
jbdean 06-05-2007, 11:48 AM Desmond takes the cake and the whole buffet table! With none of the calories! How you gonna' beat that?

LostKitty 06-05-2007, 12:01 PM :24: jane, that's priceless right there.
jbdean 06-05-2007, 12:22 PM :24: jane, that's priceless right there.Glad you liked that. I love that pix! Am I the only one that sees no real resemblance between Des and Ian? I mean the features are all the same ( ) but yet they really look nothing alike. I think it must be Ian's uncanny ability to transform into his characters. He just brings them from the inside out and makes them look totally different. I think an excellent example is Des vs Theo. Both w/long hair, both w/facial hair yet they don't look like the same person. Amazing!!!
LostKitty 06-05-2007, 12:34 PM Oh yes, I agree! Theo and Des are such similar-looking characters, but they look nothing alike! Ian is so amazing!

And like so many of Ian's characters, he has made Desmond so special ... so unique. I just love the torment that he brings to Desmond and the way he can convey his whole heart and soul with a look or a gesture. Desmond is truly a fantastic character. If he were real (be still my heart) he would truly have a lot of people wanting to be close to him. The "specialness" that is Desmond is evident, I think, to anyone with eyes and a heart.

Oh, I couldn't have said it better! I believe you speak for all of us who saw that right in his very first scene in MOSMOF. I knew right there that I never saw a character like him ever! My eternal question is, would I LOVE Desmond this much if it wasn't for Ian? I probably would, but not that religiously as I do now  He rocked my world at first glance. Not only because of his looks, but the warmth that comes across through his delivery of Desmond... is unbeliavable! I can't believe any actor could do that just at this rate. To play him well is one thing, torment, sadness, stuff... but this requires a good amount of warmth of Ian to be able to give...

I can't believe any actor could do that just at this rate. To play him well is one thing, torment, sadness, stuff... but this requires a good amount of warmth of Ian to be able to give...And I think you followed up my post perfectly! I still remember that "first" time I saw him. "Hello? Who is this?" I asked out loud as I sat up on the sofa. LOL Any good actor could play Desmond but bring him to LIFE as Ian has? I doubt that. Desmond needs to be human ... more so, I think, than the average character that needs to be that. He has to be human at all levels and that takes a special talent. It takes someone who can understand Desmond's torment but not make the torment the only face he shows. He has to know when to let a tiny bit of shine show through the sadness or loss or pain and Ian does that perfectly.
Would I still love Desmond if Ian wasn't playing him? Probably not ... or at least no where near as deeply as I do. Des is a fun character but what has been given to us beyond the "fun" part, I strongly believe, has come from Ian and I don't think anyone else could have done it.
Lea_Lost 06-05-2007, 05:21 PM Any good actor could play Desmond but bring him to LIFE as Ian has? I doubt that.
Now THAT was exactly what I meant, thank you!

So, Desmond is special because Ian is special, that's what you are saying, right? He would still be interesting, maybe even sexy played by someone else, but not this intoxicating... Your siggy says "Desmond lives!!!", and I know you wrote that in another context, but ain't it the truth?

:shesaid:
I suppose if they'd have hired another actor from the get go--and I'd never seen Ian portray Desmond on screen--I'd have liked Desmond OK. Like you gals are saying, it wouldn't be the SAME level of liking. But we wouldn't know that, since we'd never seen Ian in the part!
Now that we have, all I can say is:
Desmond = Ian!
Conceiving of ANYONE else playing this role NOW is, well, inconceivable! :no2:

I know there are lots of actors that could do a great job with this character but TPTB knew that they had "Desmond" when Ian auditioned and the growth of the fan base has reinforced their decision ten fold!

Conceiving of ANYONE else playing this role NOW is, well, inconceivable! :no2:Exactly! Once in a lifetime a role comes along that "is" meant for one actor and one actor alone. This, I believe, is the role meant only for Ian. I bet if Des could step out of the TV and meet Ian he'd say, "Thanks, brotha!"
LostKitty 06-06-2007, 12:37 AM I bet if Des could step out of the TV and meet Ian he'd say, "Thanks, brotha!"
:24: I bet you're right.
Save The Humans 06-06-2007, 02:24 AM I think Ian might be a little startled, though! :D

And that's exactly my reason to (sort of) trust TPTB... They knew they found treasure in Ian, and they love him, so they are not totally screwed up

LOL, they both have reasons to be thankful, right? Oh, and so do we!
LostKitty 06-06-2007, 10:58 PM Oh, jane, you just keep cracking me up. "Thanks, brotha." Haha!
jbdean 06-07-2007, 12:13 AM Oh, jane, you just keep cracking me up. "Thanks, brotha." Haha!
You know you're too easily amused, don't you? ;)
LostKitty 06-07-2007, 12:19 AM Yes, I actually do know that. :D But life is so much easier that way.
Save The Humans 06-07-2007, 01:08 AM The second one is Des stepping out of the TV, the first one is Ian's reaction to that, right?
jbdean 06-07-2007, 03:01 AM The second one is Des stepping out of the TV, the first one is Ian's reaction to that, right? :laughing:No the first one is Des and the second one is Ian. I know the Ian one looks like a TV but I just picked a brush affect that I liked. Sorry to confuse you. ;)
Save The Humans 06-07-2007, 03:51 AM Well, the second guy seemed happy, like he was saying, "Thanks, brutha!"
The first guy looked like he'd taken a look at the second guy, and was saying, "Oh, no! What have I created?" :D
That's why I thought #2 = Des and #1 = Ian! ;)
Hinnie 11-28-2007, 02:30 PM Thoughts on Des?
Well...
he's real
- in his reactions, spontaneity, emotions and addictions
he's got a talent to make me laugh, thrill, cry...
he's credible and incredible
he's intruiging
he's mad
he also can be responsible, he learn this on the Island
-> when he's mad I want hold him (at least), when he's so responsible - I would go with him everywhere
he's got a roguish charm
- love men with that kind of charm, with that blink in the eye
he's totally sexy
he's a man - man and human
he's original - in look and in character
he's moving really sexy
his story is - for me - the most original and involving story in Lost
It will be developing.
