I think tonight's episode might have provided more clues into Mister Eko. A lot of people seem to agree that something seems off about him, and they are trying to rearrange the letters in his name to find a message like there was with Ethan Rom (the original infiltrator).

What if you don't rearrange the letters to get the clue, but you listen to what his name sounds like when spoken and compare it to several events in this episode...

Mister Eko ... mis-ter-ek-o ... mis-dir-ect-or ... misdirector

In "Abandoned" he several times was leading the direction of travel, but never gave a clear answer or reason for his choices or instincts. Anytime he was asked, answers sounded like (paraphrasing) 'maybe one day, maybe more' or 'I think it's a penninsula, we should cut through.'

When it was all said and done, he lead his group right into the others when they could have followed the beach and someone ended up getting shot. When you add that up with the fact that he appears to have a heightened sense of awareness and knowledge compared to the others, I think that 'misdirector' seems pretty fitting to me.

But, by running into Shannon and Sayid, he has obviously been leading the group in the right direction.

You could look at it from either angle. It could also be said that Shannon and Sayid were led to the others.

I'm not dead-set on this entire theory, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

I don't think he's a bad guy. I really like him. He's the only one that's willing to help out. If he is a bad guy, the writers are doing a very good job in making me like him.

I don't think Mr. Eko is an other - maybe he is not a survivor of flight 815 but rather the drug runner but he seems like a very kind and trust worthy person. I like him a lot. Either way we will find out next week in their story.

I enjoy the character of Mister Eko as well. I have always seen him as the Locke of their group.

I thought the staement about him finally talking was interesting. Seems Mr. Ecko went through a quiet period on the island. I wonder if maybe he was mute before the crash and was healed like Locke.

I read an interview with Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje. He is in the new Fifty Cent movie. They talked to him about his character "Emeka" in Lost. First time I heard that name. Given some of the spoiler pics, it looks like he got attached to the surviving children. I could see a kid shortening Mr. Emeka to Mr. Eko. His attachment may be why he has been so quiet. He was traumatized with their taking.

Ana said to him " I liked you better when you didn't talk" -- witch to me suggested that perhaps he was a mute before the crash - and the island cured him, ala John Loche.

someone might have said this already but .....

I think that Mr. Eko's shirt is interesting. I looks very vintage, yes? Almost pirate like!

well i know for a fact that eko was on the plane. in the preview from three weeks ago you see him carrying people ashore after the plane crash. he has on black dress pants and i think what looked like a white dresh shirt. this leads me to believe he is just another survivor like the rest of the tail'ers.

The one thing that I have noticed is that AL seems to depend on Eko. She seemed lost without him when he went to help Jin find Mike. He seems to know the island very well (at least more then the other tailies) - how is this?

I do really like Eko's character - can't wait for next week, should shed some light on him.

there's been a lot of speculation that Eko is the "Locke" of his group...always seems to know what to do or how get to where they need to go...in other words, very resourceful. In re-watching past episodes, both Charlie and Sayid say that Locke is their only chance of surviving...from what we've seen so far, Eko seems to be regarded in the same way by his group.

Constant reader, infrequent poster

Perhaps Eko infiltrated the group sort of like Ethan Rom did to the original group? I think he is from the Nigerian plane, not Flight 815

Eko could still be from the Nigerian plane. Maybe he pulled a "Kate" and grabbed some clothes from a dead passenger to make it look like he had been on Flight 815. Who knows? I guess we'll find out soon.

I like that! The kids called him Mr. Eko so he kept it. Very very cute :)

Excellent theory! I can definitely see that as a possibility.
He DID look really sad in those spoiler pix. (Wish I hadn't looked at them now, but oh well.)

I found this interesting, as I am into anagrams. Having searched using mister "eko" and "echo," I decided to try this new info and searched "mister emeka." One interesting (well, more than one, especially since the word "kismet" is buried in there)anagram came up: meek artemis. Since my mythology is rusty at best, I looked up Artemis. Here is a brief synopsis: Artemis was the virgin MOON goddess of the hunt (tracker), wild animals...wilderness (among others), and, interestingly enough, she was the twin sister of APOLLO! I like it!
