View Full Version : Sayids Nails
tmkuroda 11-10-2005, 09:09 AM Anyone else grossed out by the length of Sayids nails? I was so grossed out I had to re watch most of the Shannon scene over again minus the touching her face with those long nasty nails part of course.. Is he thinking about doing a vampire movie. YUCK
Naveen Andrews is a skilled guitar player... Guitar players have long finger nails on their right hand, and short on their left...

I have to say that I definitely noticed those claws right away! I didn't know if it was NA's thing or the character's thing...like they've been on the island for almost two months give or take and there are no nailclippers!
wishiwasfreckles 11-10-2005, 09:27 AM My husband was cracking jokes about that all night...he and I were both pretty grossed out about that though.....yuck.
lostindixie 11-10-2005, 10:01 AM His nails are kinda gross. If you weren't a nail biter before you got to that island, you should be by now.
chellly 11-10-2005, 10:03 AM Glad I wasn't the only one that noticed this and was grossed out. :) I thought it was just me.
Moriquenya 11-10-2005, 10:25 AM Noticed them a couple of weeks ago and that definitely lowered his sex appeal in my eyes. Ick!
LuvMySayid 11-10-2005, 10:26 AM Long nails on the right hand are mandatory in order to play classical guitar correctly. (Try it - you'll see.) Naveen has not been required to cut his nails for the part he's playing. It's that simple.
Alkcalien 11-10-2005, 10:32 AM I love Sayid, and I adore Naveen, but I try not to look at his nails.
They make me cringe! :)
:sayid: :shannon:

That's fine. But people can still find long nails kinda gross. That's fine too.
Noeland 11-10-2005, 10:34 AM Well, his nails look friggin dirty to me, and yeah, that's gross. if I am not mistaken, his nails are long on both hands.
By the way, they do have nail clippers, scissors, and razors on the island folks. Travel supplies. They have shown us the survivors using these a time or two last season, and I believ, once this season.
Njc--------------
rvarzea 11-10-2005, 10:36 AM Ahh the mysteries of the island and of a fabulous show we call Lost... death... disappearing flight attendants... Walt speaking backwards... did Ana-Lucia shoot Shannon??? ... and how about Sayid's fingernails!!!
I most intrigued by that last one there!
;)
ennui108 11-10-2005, 10:40 AM Ha! I know, who notices fingernails?
So long as the guy keeps them clean, I don't see what's so unsexy about it. I'm an artist, so I personally keep my nails cut to the quick (you ever dig charcol or acrylic paint out from under your nails? Not a fun job), but if I were a guitarist, I would keep them long. In a way, it's sort of sexy- it shows he has talent.
generalpropmgr@yahoo.com 11-10-2005, 11:04 AM I noticed them too but didn't think anything of it. common lost on an island weird things happening - I don't think I would care about my nails - I'd be more worried about wiping my butt or that monthly thing!!!!! (which they have never addressed).
jackMEsawyer 11-10-2005, 11:56 AM I noticed his Left Thumbnail was long, did kinda gross me out a bit, but then again he has been putting all his time into trying to please shannon and built her a pretty nice tent. Maybe he just has not had the time to groom ;)
Laurieg 11-10-2005, 12:02 PM My son is a guitar player, and a good one at that. His nails are short. He uses a pick. But then he doesn't play classical, so what do I know?.......lol
Cluck 11-10-2005, 12:12 PM I don't understand... why is it OK for a woman to have long nails, but is gross on a male? Is it just gross because of a stereotype?
They were not dirty, that is just his coloring and yes any accomplished guitar player will have long nails.
So it is OK for Charlie to paint his nails black.. just to look cool... but when a person lets their fingernails grow longer so they can play the guitar better... that is not OK?
Zipdot 11-10-2005, 12:37 PM No, not "any accomplished guitar player will have long nails."
On the fretting hand, nails should be kept short, as long nails can get in the way and injure the wood of the fretboard. By "get in the way," I mean they can make you change the angle that your fingers interact with the fretboard at, altering your fretting style and ultimately harming your fretting accuracy.
As for the picking hand, it just depends on your style. I think the majority of "accomplished" classical guitarists use finger picks for performances - it is better to have a "standard" picking mechanism rather than some kind of ambiguous finger nail length to rely on, especially in consideration of the possibility that nails can break.

Yep!! If you are "grossed out" don't date a guitar player!!
Robinhood56 11-10-2005, 10:35 PM They are neat and well kept. i don't see what's gross about them.

Obviously Naveen's style is to use his nails. From the look of them I'm betting they don't break easily. I wish I could say the same.

Plus...Sayid's not the grooming type. And if SOMEONE hadn't gotten freaking killed, they could've imparted some of her nail grooming tips to him.
Emptyy 11-10-2005, 10:49 PM I didn't catch the nails... does anyone have a screen cap ?
EyeAmLost 11-10-2005, 11:26 PM shallowness. i wonder about some people here. always whining about something petty. what has THE FUSELAGE become?
iamicarus 11-10-2005, 11:32 PM shallowness. i wonder about some people here. always whining about something petty. what has THE FUSELAGE become?
Aww come on! Dirt under long-man-nails is Nasty....admit it! Hillarious!!!
chellly 11-11-2005, 09:36 AM shallowness. i wonder about some people here. always whining about something petty. what has THE FUSELAGE become?
I don't know that I would classify it as whining. Simply an observation. I still think Sayid is cool regardless of the length of his nails. And I'm not a die hard fan, so I didn't know about the classical guitar. I learned something new about a Lostie.
Edit for spelling
SawyerLuv108 11-11-2005, 10:00 AM i was grossed out by his nails too!
I was hoping someone would mention that!
Laurieg 11-11-2005, 10:04 AM I think the nails are gross. Like I said before my son is a guitar player in a band.....blah,blah,blah....His nails are short.
But I did see an interview once with Paul McCarthy and he said his wife turned him on to acrylic nails for playing the guitar. He said they work better then anything he has ever tried.
So maybe there is some merrit to the guitar playing theory.
Cluck 11-11-2005, 11:27 AM Again I ask... why the double standard? Why can a woman have long nails but not a man? And his nails are NOT dirty... that is his coloring.
Laurieg 11-11-2005, 11:35 AM Double standard? Well when I think of long nails I think of a woman. That also goes for make up, high heels and dresses.
Would you say that if it was a woman with a breard?
Cluck 11-11-2005, 01:01 PM A woman with a beard has a high testosterone problem or something. That isn't biologically typical... On the other hand... men and women both have the biological ability to grow their nails... so your comparison isn't valid.
Many men wear make up .. more than you think.. Also in some cultures, men wear dresses. I am not a man so dn't think that I am just saying this because I am a cross dresser or something. I just don't like double standards..
LostFANatic91 11-11-2005, 01:08 PM Anyone else grossed out by the length of Sayids nails? I was so grossed out I had to re watch most of the Shannon scene over again minus the touching her face with those long nasty nails part of course.. Is he thinking about doing a vampire movie. YUCK
1. He has been on an island for quite some time. And has not been able cut his nails because he was too busy fixing a computer or going out into the jungle or hiding from The Others. So I can understand why his finger nails are so long.
2. He plays the guitar in real life, and is quite good at it is I might add.
peepstone 11-11-2005, 01:15 PM on the subject of hygiene- did anyone else cringe when Shannon and Sayid kissed in the tent. No toothbrushes for two months! Dragon breath much?
LostFANatic91 11-11-2005, 01:17 PM They had aloe plant that Sun grew and I am sure they had tooth brushed from the plane.
Hanks 11-11-2005, 01:41 PM .. Also in some cultures, men wear dresses. I am not a man so dn't think that I am just saying this because I am a cross dresser or something. I just don't like double standards..
I believe they are referred to Kilts not dresses. :)
Cluck 11-11-2005, 01:52 PM According to misterpoll, 78% of the responders think it is fine for men to have long nails.

Laurieg 11-11-2005, 02:00 PM Geez it' s personal opinion. No right or wrong answer. I do not like long nails on a man. But then I do like men with hairy chests. A lot of women don't. That doesn't make me or them wrong. Personal preference.
Indydon 11-11-2005, 02:11 PM Locke has long nails too. I wonder if that's something that's supposed to show realism from being on the island so long.
Indydon 11-11-2005, 02:12 PM Oops, forgot...also long nails can be used as tools.
iamicarus 11-11-2005, 02:21 PM Again I ask... why the double standard? Why can a woman have long nails but not a man? And his nails are NOT dirty... that is his coloring.
umm...nope...I see dirt. Even people with dark skin can have dirt under their finger nails. They are long and dirty. It doesn't reflect on his guitar playing, his acting, or the spectacuar person that he could be. It is JUST an observation. I would probably be grossed out if Shannon showed up with a bunch of food stuck in her teeth! It is something that is gross to some and not to others. People do have natural gag relfexes to somethings!! lol
Since this thread is worthless without pictures.

was thinking the same thing unless they came across something to use in the hatch....
Maybe someone should give him a guitar pick???

sydneytheduck 11-11-2005, 03:06 PM This thread is comedy gold! 5 pages about the guy's fingernails - fantastic :biggrin:
I'd never noticed his nails but from now on I bet they are all I can see...
iamicarus 11-11-2005, 03:49 PM :roflmao: *slaps knee and then rolls on the floor* HAHAaaaahhhahah!!
lost_in_thought 11-11-2005, 04:22 PM My mom and I noticed his nails a while back...
And of course there is nothing WRONG with it, for me it is just a huge turn-off - YUCK! It sadly brings down his hotness factor ;)

word.
Debisobsessed 11-11-2005, 04:54 PM I was so not looking at his nails. And, at that point, bad breath would not be a breaking point with respect to tearing each other's clothes off.

And 80% of the people who answered were men... So men think it is ok and women on the other hand think it is not ok... Sorry but there are a lot of reasons why men need to keep their nails trimed and I am not going to go into detail abgout the whys here.:lipsseal:

Word. Word. lol
Cluck 11-23-2005, 12:45 PM Paul McCartney also has long nails. Do you think he is gross too? He actually has to use acrylic nails (suggested by his wife) because his natural nails get so worn down by the end of a tour.
