I am sorry to be posting this again, but I thought perhaps if I post this on your board, and instead of the regular VIP board, I will receive an answer =)

I am an aspiring screenwriter, and I hope to one day have the opportunity to do what you all do. I am 17, and my question is this:

What steps should I take in becoming a screenwriter? I would love to follow in the footsteps of all you LOST writers, as well as others, like Joss Whedon, Tim Minear, Drew Goddard, (I grew up watching Buffy/Angel and loved the concept of TV Writing ever since) Javi, JJ Abrams, David Greenwalt, Damon Lindelof, Jennifer Johnson, Dini, and so on.

Does it make a difference in which undergraduate college I attend - or do the grad schools make more of a difference? Or, is it pure talent, that is, if you are born to be a writer, "no school can define you, just help you."

Basically, to all you LOST screenwriters, (and any others who are in the buisness or what not), what should I do to become a screenwriter, and any other advice is greatly appreciated.

I hold a TREMENDOUS respect for the people who write for these characters, so if anyone can help me out, please do

There's no real simple answer to that. But I'll give you my two-cents about writing...

Try working in some local theatres, taking acting/improv classes... Believe it or not, you come away with a strong sense of realistic dialogue and scene construction. Starting short form is a good way to get your feet wet. Write scenes. Hone them. And get others to act in them.

As far as screenplays go, grad schools aren't really necessary. The best lessons come from reading well-regarded screenplays. As many as you can get your hands on. Compare the scripts to way they were shot. See if the director captured the writer's intent.

As far as undergrad schools, you might want to considero USC or UCLA which both have great programs.

In any event, talent will win out no matter what route you take. So just keep at it. And when you feel you're ready, submit scripts to SUNDANCE or AFI or any other professionally recognized independent festival. And if you want to write for television... after you finish school move out to LA and try your luck.

Okay, that'll be two-cents, please...
