Did anyone else notice that the body that Mr. Ecko pulled out of the water in the beginning of the ep looked a lot like Jack's dad? Plus the body was quite stiff as it was being pulled out. Hmmmm?

Could be. He was definitely dead, that's for sure.

I thought the same thing, but I couldn't see his face clearly enough to tell.

That's what I thought when I first saw the body.

My wife noticed that. We looked at it about five times and I still wasn't sure. Could be, though.

hmmm, i'll have to go back and watch it again and check that out... i wouldn't be at all surprised, except we never did really find out if the people at the airport let Jack take his dad's body on the plane... i guess we kind of assumed he had to go home with an empty casket?
though i would think if he didn't get the body he would have left the casket behind ... anyway, good catch, i'm definitely going to check it out.
i thought tonight's episode was excellent! i am really looking forward to what happens next.

There is still no certainty that Jack's dad was on the plane. We left off with him being told no to bringing his body on the plane. He could have brought back just the coffin for the funeral.

i think that's the point of this thread--to see if he was, in fact, on the plane.

I believe that his father body was indeen on the plane, because, if not, why would he even mind opening the coffin on that episode? By the way, why do the writers do not clear this out? I agree that Jack should be creeped out if he didn't see the body in the coffin (assuming that it was there), but what else could have possibly happened? Too many questions...

I dont think jack would have gotten on the plane w/o his fathers body. And I doubt even more that he would have taken the body out of the casket & just brought the casket home. They obviously had a reason for showing eko pulling bodies out of the water. Maybe this is it.

i don't think that jack would bring home an empty coffin either. that just seems like quite an expense for a piece of wood he could buy in LA. but to play for both sides, jack was chasing his "father" that episode, and he might have opened the casket to see if his "father" was in there.

Pure speculation, but if there was a coffin and nobody was in it when Jack opened it up, it's not crazy to think that the body came out of the coffin and landed somewhere else on the island after the plane ripped into pieces. Thoughts?

I was just thinking the same thing as I was reading this thread. Thanks for reading my mind!

I remeber thinking that when he was pulling out the body, but he didn't look *that* stiff, not for someone who must have been dead for many days. He also looked pretty peaky. Hard to say since he wasn't a real dead body :)

me too...rigormortis would have set in by the time the crash happened making the position of the man's arms when Ecko is pulling him out difficult to say the least...also, in White Rabbit, I got the impression that when we see Jack's father we are seeing him as he was in the coffin...in so far as how he's dressed that is...he's not wearing a blue shirt...

I believe that rigormortis does eventually go away and the body will soften again. Though I would think that he would have been embalmed by the time he made it on the plane. I don't know what affect that would have on the body.
But his dad being in the water is something cool to think about.

Rigor mortis lasts approximately 72 hours (http://chemistry.about.com/cs/biochemistry/a/aa061903a.htm). I'm not sure whether US regulations require embalming for repatriation of remains--a little too creepy for a Friday afternoon--but my sense is, even if embalmed the body wouldn't necessarily be immobile.

In sum, I think it's entirely possible. Better picture, anyone?

I had always assumed that his father was on the plane. When I watched White Rabbit, from the way I interpreted his facial expression, Jack seemed surprised to find the coffin empty.
