View Full Version : A subtle plothole...

Where was the signal fire that the Others/Danielle lit in Exodus Part 1 (on day 44, I believe)? A small detail overlooked by the writers, or something intentionally left out for reasons unbeknownst to us at the moment?

The tailies were still in the jungle. I doubt they could have seen it.

Maybe the mountain was in the way. They didn't even pick up Danielle's signal...

I agree with PosseGal and Peach...they were in the jungle surrounded by mountains.

Further more, maybe I'm remembering this incorrectly... but didn't the original Castaways only notice the smoke after Danielle showed up and mentioned what had happened with her? Not saying that they wouldn't have noticed it eventually, but I would hardly say this was a "plot hole".

Now that I think about it...would they have run into Charlie and Sayid as they made their way through the jungle? Or would they have just missed each other? Or come across Danielle?

Or would they have heard the monster when it was Chasing Jack and Company....

Nice. I never thought about that.

No..scratch that idea. The baby stealing monster chasing happened the same day the raft launched. So the various teams would not have intersected.

It looks like a pretty huge island and the grroups were on opposite ends for alot of that time, seperated by mountains. And when the black smoke happened, they were in a dense jungle to boot.

keep in mind, shannon had been trekked across the jungle looking for walt for quite a while. so the two places were probably quite far from each other.

I am going with plothole, hopefully intentional. There's no way they miss all of that
smoke even if they are separated by 30 miles.

It's very possible the tailies were hunkered down in their hatch on the day the pillar of smoke was up.

Have you ever been in a thick forest? There is no way you can see a fire unless you step on it. Even if you are in a clearing the trees will block your view of the horizon, so that you can only look up.

I would have considered it very unbelievable had they seen any of the fireworks that took place on the other side of the island.

Let me just say as kindly as I can that I am in very strong disagreement with you on
this one.

No problem, I'm feeling quite the same ;)

I'm also feeling sorry for the writers, they just had to choose which one of us to disappoint ;)

If the tailies did see the smoke they obviously didn't think anything of it, or possibly thought it was another tactic "to draw them out". I can't imagine they would attempt to find the source of it.

What about the fact that both parties started fires the first few days on the island. They were both on the beaches then so why didnt they see each others smoke? Of course you could use the same logic with this loophole. Doesnt ruin the show for me though...

There's nothing that says they must have seen it, the island is huge with a tall range across it. Smoke hundreds of feet high could easily not be seen, or be missed, by people on another part of the island. It's possible that they could have seen it for sure, but it's also possible they couldn't.

there's also a comment on another thread about the "taillies" not seeing the fireworks sayid, sawyer and shannon fired....seems to me they're on a reeeeally big island with reeeeally tall mountains between them (or, they're just spending their time searching for ships in the ocean).

But if there are big tall mountains between them, why didn't we see the tailies climbing or otherwise crossing those mountains to get to the other side of them?

Just going off the diary, the smoke was mentioned in the Day 43 entry. I don't remember if the episode even covered the tailies activities that day.
