View Full Version : The Army Knife
sparks 11-17-2005, 12:40 AM I'm surprised no one is talking about this!
Verrrry interesting that the knife dates back about 20 years. Prior to Danielle's arrival, but on track with the Dharma set up, right?
How did the others get that?
(and kudos to Ana for that observation--way cool!)
wedestroymyths 11-17-2005, 12:49 AM There's a sweet army surplus store in Ann Arbor. Or it's probably a clue or something. sigh.
i_love_dmjgmfna 11-17-2005, 12:52 AM Makes you wonder if or how the others are involved with the DHARMA experiments...
irish77 11-17-2005, 12:53 AM Well the "Peace Corp." reference seems to prove that the Others or whatever group Goodwin belonged too have been on the island for atleast 20 years. Although now that I think of it they could have just scavenged it off of other people who were on the island.
Ray66 11-17-2005, 12:53 AM They stole it from Locke's case of 400 knives....c'mon now.
...Which reminds me, when Micheal, Locke, and Kate are hunting for boar....and Micheal speaks up and get's attacked by the boar...doesn't he drop one of Locke's knives?
I don't recall them picking it back up.
I'll need to check that episode and compare Micheal's knife the Army knife we're talking about...
Eleri 11-18-2005, 06:01 PM AL's assessment of the knife makes me even more convinced that the case of knives Locke found on the beach was never HIS, it was Ana's
skitzsofrenik 11-18-2005, 07:25 PM locke has 7 knives
The knife does strike me as being something very significant but I don't know what yet.
Delta 11-18-2005, 11:41 PM Maybe the knife was left behind during World War II...the island is in the Pacific somewhere between Australia and the US, right?
acp28 11-19-2005, 12:33 AM Maybe the knife was left behind during World War II...the island is in the Pacific somewhere between Australia and the US, right?
But WWII was way more than 20 years ago, and the knife was apparently made around 20 years ago ... so ... probably not. But good thinking ... maybe the island is somewhere near a military base in the Pacific, and the knife washed up onshore? Long shot, but does anyone know of any Army bases in the South Pacific occupied around 1985?
dylan_1200 11-19-2005, 12:53 AM They stole it from Locke's case of 400 knives....c'mon now.
They find a case of knives and choose a pocket knife to steal?
And as I have been trying to say, we do know of a listening post in the pacific approx 16 years ago. Which is why I am theorising if we go down this path, that if a listening post was based in the pacific and close enough to pick up a transmission from the island....2 questions I would like to see answered are:
1) Why a listening post...what were they listening for?
2) What happened prior for them to have one where it was?

Due to their nature, long-wave transmissions can be used for reliable long-range communication. Submarines and naval ships often use long-wave radio signals for communication. With ICBM subs on the prowl, one would like to know if there's any unusual chatter (i.e., orders to attack and such -- coded, of course). Using the 16-years-ago timeframe, this would place us in the Cold War, so obviously monitoring long-wave transmissions would be important. If we go further back, it would be part of an early warning system to prevent another Pearl Harbor.
It just so happened that they heard "Hurley's numbers"...
Veiny Eyeball 11-19-2005, 02:53 PM , and the knife was apparently made around 20 years ago
"Apparently" is the mot juste. Why should we take Ana's opinion as an authority?
getmeouttahere 11-19-2005, 04:17 PM Ana seemed very familiar with Army issued equipment.....knew what the markings on the knife meant and knew that it was not a knife currently in use by the Army.
Psyweb 11-19-2005, 04:34 PM Also, it could be that an army aircraft had crashed on the island and was never heard from again like all others who find themselves trapped on the island. The others could have recovered it from the wreckage.
lostnerd 11-19-2005, 05:37 PM A while back, I slowed down the scene where someone tries to cut into Claire with a knife. I immediately thought of that scene when I saw the army knife. I'll have to go back and check the scene again and see if it was the same knife...if so maybe it was Goodwin who attacked Claire.

Good catch! Please report back
