I was just thinking about "the sickness", and it seems like it is a form of dementia. I am assuming that it a type of dementia whose symptoms become more apperent over time, and takes hold of some people due to the location of the "Island".

I may be wrong, but I think it was a form of dementia not unlike the kind that Steve Buscemi had in that asteroid movie. Or maybe Ren & Stimpy in one of their cartoons.
