i just thought of this, about the ak-47. for those of you who dont know its that gun you see a lot thats an automatic rifle and is brown and black. it is the most common gun i have seen, and is used on both sides. desmond's hatch definitly has smething to do with the others, i just thihnk it was decommishioned or something, but i dont know and thats not what im getting at. the ak-47 is not an american gun. it orginiates from Russia, and is also used in other European countires, and as most of you probly know the middle east. maybe from this we can conclude that this whole project was started by americans, because i think then the guns would have been an m4a1 or m16 rifle. i would think then the people who started this whole thing came from another country, and we know two people who are definitly not american, which are desmond and roussuea, both of which happen to be the "innocent people" who are just as confused as the crash survivors. maybe they are in on it two in some way. post anything else u can think of cuz i might have lost some ppl i dont kno

Well, Alvar Hanso was an European arms dealer. It was the DeGroots that were Americans.

Well, AK-47's are designed to be simple and reliable. They're easy to repair and maintain in anything from jungles to deserts to the polar regions. They're also easy to acquire, at least so far as fully automatic weapons go, and are manufactured world wide. It would make sense to pick this rifle as the standard for the Dharma operation since it was in such a remote and environmentally hostile location.

Ak's are made ansd shipped all over the world now days, including the USA. They are not exclusive to any particular country, haven;t been for many years.
Tom carries a Luger P-08, Pickett carried a Walther P-38. Both German made, both OLD guns.
I don't think the guns have any significance to the others. And guns have been an issue in the show anyway. The gun Sawyer left with on the raft was a Sig 226, it turned into a beretta over the summer break. Michael left the hatch with a Remington bolt action rifle, that became a semi auto out in the jungle.
In "Hunting party" Sawyer left camp with a beretta 92, it turned into a Colt 1911 when he dropped it on the ground for Zeke.

I have a Chinese-made AK-47 that I purchased at my local gun store several years ago. There were several in stock at that time. There have been dozens of versions of this rifle manufactured over the last 50 years.

Its true many of the guns in the hatch are russian (ak-47, durganov, i might even recall an rpg but not sure), but there were also some american guns as well (i think in one scene locke is cleaning a colt 1911 and the remmington rifle mentioned above.)If the island was really started after the cold war as we were led to believe, russian guns would have been a cheap and efficient option for weapons and equipment since russia would have been in the process of de-militarizing. Was it Lord of War that says after the fall of the soviet union, the ak-47 was russias biggest export? It just makes since for the time period the hatch seems to have been created.

AK refers to the name of the creator of this rifle (would spell it out but I'm terrible at spelling). 47 refers to the first year of manufactoring of this weapon 1947. Russia is the primary maunfactor of the AK series but many of the Soviet block nations had versions. The many versions are the 47 which is easy to spot with it's metal magizines, the AK-74 (maufactor in 1974) uses the composted plastic magizine which is a wood color and the flash surpressors where also added on that model (keeps the rifle from climbing when in full-auto, and it does work).
And the sniper rifle is a Dragonov maufactured by the Romainans. Also another interesting weapon, easily hits a taget at 1100 meters.
Yes all of these weapons were massed producted and because of the economic crisses of the soviet block during the Cold War, were being sold off as a export product to anyone with cash. It is easy to believe the DARMHA would have been able to get large caches of these weapons very cheaply. As one Lager noted these weapons were cheap and easy to maintain which made the demand high for fledgling countries, militias and others who needed large amounts of weapons fast without a whole lot of questions.
Thought it was interesting the attention that Noeland had about the weapons changing..chaulk that one up to the contanuity guys not doing their job to well. Good catch!
