I almost just fell out of my chair whilst rewatching this scene. Go to the very beginning of the scene, when Juliet and the cute Other are flirting. You hear the monster sound 3 times from when the scene starts to when Juliet throws the water to Sawyer.

It's the initial far-away Monster sound, the clicking ch-ch-ch-ch, which TPTB have said is the sound from a NYC taxi cab receipt printing.

I'm not saying it IS something to do with the Monster. But if it's not--what is it?? Am I crazy?

Seriously? That is priceless. I didn't hear it, but I'll have to rewatch.

What....? Ok, will have to go rewatch. Not because I want to see the kiss again. No, of course not....

The clicking sound is the "scouting" Smokey...the wispy one that snoops around and goes zipping by... (but I didn't hear or see it in this epi yet)

Yes, Tabby, exactly! That sound. Just rewatch, please please please and tell me I'm not crazy!

Yes, I heard it too. There are actually a couple of times through the episode where you hear a ch...ch...ch..in the background. At first I thought it might be a tree frog or bird, but it got a bit more obvious, like maybe we're supposed to pick up on it..

I've just gone through that scene a few times on a quality sound system, and I'm pretty sure that's just a tropical bird chirping, and I've heard my share of them. What does seem remarkable to me is the fact that we could actually hear so much wildlife in that scene, compared to much of the rest of the show, where it's not as obvious.

when did they say anything about the NYC taxi thing?

They mentioned it on one of the special features on the S2 DVDs.

hmm, I have the season 2 dvds...i know that the beeping in the hatch was a supermarket checkout scanner, can you be more specific about where on the DVDs it was? thanks.

also, I agree that it was just a bird chirping, i watched it again

Well, I'll buy it being a bird if other people agree.

They said it during the 23rd Psalm commentary of the S2 DVDs, but they had said it earlier in a print interview or something else that I recall reading.

Definately heard the smoke monster sound, I believe right before Juliette handed Sawyer the canteen. Didn't see the origin, but it was THE sound - smokey, Locke's office in S1 - the adding machine/receipt sound. Unmistakable.

Don't know if we heard the sound or not, but it could be simultaneous with other things going on...perhaps on other parts of the island that we don't know about yet or might see in the near future....

Yay, someone agrees! Yes, it is also the sound of Locke's adding machine from Walkabout.

Hey Laura, I thought it was a bird when I relistened. BUT, it did have the same rhythm and repetition as smokey usually does. I'll wait for pen's final report. :)

I pretty much think the same thing. the pitch and length of the sound makes seem more like a bird but the rhythm is very much like the clicking sound from the monster . There's also other bird sounds in the scene, but this sound is the most prominent one, not sure if that's on purpose or random thing.

Speaking of monster sounds, as mentioned in several threads from the last two epi's , there does seem to be many sounds throughout which sound like the monster (when Jack opens the hatch and water comes in, various sounds while jack is locked up) When Sawyer is moving around his wheel barrel the rumbling noises is also slightly reminiscent of the monster. Is this all coincidence? on purpose? Are the sound people just reusing whatever sounds they happen to have laying around?

Also in the scene of Sawyer and Kate back in their cages after the kissing scene, you can hear the roar/moan/cry of something that sounds like a large animal. It starts off kind of muted, and then gets louder and fades away after 3 or 4 times. It is definitely not mechanical in nature, and I would venture to say it's something large, like a bear or lion. I'm almost sure that was the scene I heard it in, but I'll go back this evening and re-watch to be sure. Did anyone else hear what I'm talking about? It especially caught my attention since the entire island seems to be almost void of wildlife and we never hear much of any animal sounds...thoughts?

Well... options.
a) audio technicians are reusing Monster sounds, not realizing that we'll over analyze
b) Monster-esque sounds are being used on purpose to remind us of Smokey. Why?
1) because something going on in the Hyrda involves Smokey, or
2) TPTB are trying to subconsciously make us think about Smokey for some reason that is yet unknown.
c) totally unrelated to Monster sounds and we're just crazy
