At the scene where Kate and Sawyer are talking at the end, I thought I heard something weird in the background, so I separated it out from the surround channels and found this noise (you might have to turn it up a lot, it's pretty quiet):

Could it be a bear or something? Is there an animal in Hawaii that sounds like this?

Ah! Nice one, gumpy, after the show ended I meant to post a thread on this but totally forgot to. xD

Really don't think it was a bear. And I think TPTB would have edited it out if they didn't want it in there. Kindof sounds like a bird to me but I really have no clue.

I heard it last week too. I think it sounds like a cow. I could be wrong, it's way in the background with talking and other sound on top, but that was my first thought. I grew up on a dairy farm and it just sounded like a cow to me.

yeah I heard this in both episodes as well, I'm guessing that it's supposed to be a way of showing that they are at the zoological station. Though I do wonder if it's just wildlife around the area or is it an animal the others have in captivity.

Hyena.

The males make those sounds usually for courtship.

Are you implying that Sawyer is a hyena? ;)
I'm not sure what it is, but I have to go with Charlie on this. Sounds kinda bird-like.

I thought it was a whale...they are at the Hydra Station are they not?

Jack is. We don't know about Kate and Sawyer. Ben said they were close, but can we trust that statement?

Ooooh, I noticed that as well. No idea what kind of animal it is, but considering that the Hydra is a zoological station, there could still be various kinds of animals there.

I thought it sounded like something mooing... does this mean there are animals still in captivity at the Hydra?

it sounded like whales to me, but it could be baby polar bears:biggrin:

maybe it was the Hurley Bird!

Xero is correct. That was a hyena. And if you listen during the scene in the first episode of this season, when Sawyer and Kate are in the animal cages talking to each other, you can hear it then, too.
So why do we now hear hyenas each time Sawyer and Kate are alone? Are they trying to tell us something about Sawyer and/or Kate? (Hyenas are accomplished scavengers and skilled & powerfull hunters. They are the only natural enemy of lions.)
Or are hyenas one of the animals that Dharma experimented with? If so, are we hearing hyenas that are in pens in another part of the zoo. or is there a population of them loose on the island? Encountering a hyena - or worse, a pack of Dharma-altered hyenas - would be as bad as encountering a polar bear. :eek2:

It could be a monkey. Some of them making crowing and mooing like noises.

Heard a howler monkey one night while out in jungle. Didn't sleep for three nights after that

I think it sounded like the smoke monster from the first season when they saw something moving the trees. I thought it sounded like a dinosaur, even though we know it's not.

I don't know why or where I got this from but, when I heard it, I thought: ostrich. I may not have spelled it right... but I thought it.

All three are at the Hydra. When Sawyer is looking around from his cage, the Hydra Symbol can be seen on the building.

More thoughts on hyenas, the animals we heard in each of the first 2 episodes this season:
Some African tribes believe hyenas to have supernatural powers. 'Witch doctors' who want to freak people out have been known to secretly raise hyenas from pups. When the animals are adults, they let themselves be seen walking with the hyena. People seeing this tend to not doubt the witch doctor's powers.
Keeping this in mind, what organization do we know that likes to mess with people's minds? Dharma!

Source? This is very interesting information even if it doesn't apply to the show.

I've read a lot about East Africa but I don't recall in which specific books I've seen this; more than one, though. An internet search might turn up something.
I visited Kenya a few years ago. At night, in the Masa Mara, I heard hyenas in the wild making their distinctive whooping sound. It's something you never forget, and when I heard it while Sawyer & Kate were talking in "Tale of 2 Cities" I recognized it immediately. Hearing it again in "The Glass Ballerina" makes me think that the producers aren't just putting random wildlife sounds in the background. There are hyenas on the island. The question is why and where.

 Hi, I dont often post so please dont flame me. I lived in Hawaii for a few years and I thought those animal sounds are the Gecko's that are native to the islands. Here is a link to some gecko sounds
http://www.junglewalk.com/sound/Gecko-sounds.htm

Geckos are small to moderately large lizards belonging to the family Gekkonidae and found in warm climates throughout the world.
Geckos are unique among lizards in their vocalizations, making chirping sounds in social interactions with other geckos.

Most geckos are tan to dark grey, subtly patterned, and somewhat rubbery looking. Some species can change color to blend in with their surroundings. However others can be brightly colored. Like most lizards, they eat insects. Some species are parthenogenic, the females capable of reproducing without copulating with a male. This improves the gecko's ability to spread to new islands.

Hi uknowme...

My sister just recently told me about the geckos that can reproduce without males....interesting. The sound in the audio that's being scrutinized is the "moo-ing" sound (possibly the monster?) at the beginning....it's very low so turn the headphones up. I really can't tell if it's the monster or not.

That's awesome... if I could I'd change my name to DharmaGecko.

If you're talking about the noise when Sawyer and Kate are talking about their kiss back in the cages in the background, I'm fairly confident that the noise is exactly the same as the noise the polar bear made when Michael fought it off in Season 1 when it had cornered Walt.

If anyone could get a soundclip of that, I can't remember exactly when it was. It may have been when Walt stabbed it with the knife at the beginning of the fight.

Sounded like one to me too, very-lost. A howler or an orangutan. On the old Hanso page, they had the picture of Joop, the old orangutan that was part of the life extension experiment. I think that call has something to do with him. Or a primate of some sort.
