When Sayid gave his erason for taking 2 captive Others- so one with make the other do what he wants- I immediately thought of Sun and Jin, the Kate and Sawyer- a good reason for them to be kept together? and does it really make sense?
This make me think Kate really would be dispensible to the, because then they could plair up Jack and Sawyer.

I saw it as Kate will be Sawyer's weakness. Kind of evidenced in tonight's episode when Sawyer tried to fight back then Juliet held a gun to Kate. Sawyer on his own would allow himself to be put through the worst tortures - he's full of self-loathing. But seeing Kate in jeapordy will be his weakness.

That's what I thought of too--Kate and Sawyer. I think the whole two captives thing is so that one captive could be used as bait or collateral. Like how Sawyer got shocked when Kate spoke out asking about Jack. The others know Kate wouldn't want to see Sawyer get hurt and vice-versa, so thats them 'teaching her a lesson'.

I also just thought of Sayid and his fellow Iraq being Kelvin's captives. In that case they gave Sayid the chance to exact revenge on the other guy and get the info in the process. huh- maybe that would be Jack's use.

I thought it was pretty obivous, when Ben ask Kate , why did she ask about Sawyer first. Right there, he knew that sawyer was more important to Kate, which translate that Kate being of the same importants to Sawyer. That was the reason why Ben place Kate in the cage, (all batter, and bruise) next to Sawyer...to be able to use Kate, to control Sawyer. ( although I think Kate is in on the whole thing. Notice , that when sawyer started fighting, Kate didn't react? like she usually would. she just stood there

I think you may be on target wih Ben having Kate to breakfast to determine her biggest weakness, but I don't think she was in on it. Things moved very fast and I think Juliette got to or had her gun on Kate in no time.

Sayid IS the Master torturer. That line totally translated to Sawyer and Kate. Which may explain th Benry/Kate breakfast at the beach. Benry wanted to know where her weakness was Jack or Sawyer? When she said Sawyers name first Benry Knew her weakness and Kate got the cage across from Sawyer. I'm sure if she would have said Jacks name first her and Jack would ber in close quarters where they could see each other. Thats why Sawyer got shocked tonight when Kate became defiante. It would hurt Kate more to see Sawyer shocked/punished than Jack or herself. When Danny shocked him Kate did whatever they wanted. So the Others know complex tourturing tactics, I guess they do have access to the outside world.

Yes! I immediately thought of Kate and Sawyer when Sayid made that comment and I agree with all the stuff about how they would react more to seeing the other person shocked rather than themselves. It was interesting for me though to see how Sayid thinks similarly to the others. Maybe this means that he has a chance of understanding them and their way of thinking.

Sorry, i forgot to mention that I'm not sure that Kate really revealed anything to Ben when she said Sawyer's name first. Someone had to come first when she said it so it could have just been random when she said it. I'm not convinced that if she had said Jack's name first, Sawyer would be the one Ben visited and talked about the outside world.

I thought more along the lines of how he had to torture his commanding officer in Iraq..but it could go either way I guess.

Which I think is the reason Kate made a point of demanding to see Jack before being forced into hard labor in this episode, and in turn why that demand was defused by putting Sawyer in peril again.

Good point! The others could definetly be trying to keep Jack off Kate's mind. If there is some kind of plot to get Jack to join the other side (which is possible i guess) they would probably want to distance him as much as possible from his friends.

I was hoping this was a topic. Agreed, first thing that came to my mind was Sayid and the others have the same military background and training/rules of engagement. One hostage to make the other hotage talk. Brilliant!! Priceless comparison to Jack, Kate, & Sawyer.
