In rethinking the episode, I realize I have a hard time placing the two stories in terms of what day they happened. The Jin/Sun/Sayid story took place mostly at night--the Sawyer/Kate story happened during a single day. If these two stories were happening at the same time, does that mean one side of the island is day and the other night? Or am I just really bad at following transition clues? :confused:

yeah, now that you mention it, what the heck is that all about?? I'll have to watch again for sure now.

I'm trying to make a timeline but I have a little problem lining it up. I think this is right:

Day One: J/K/S hike out with Michael and Hurley. Sayid/Sun/Jin sail to Yurtville and start the first signal fire. J/K/S are captured and taken to the docks. Hurley sent home. J/K/S are drugged and taken to the Others' real home and kept in cells/cages. Kate told by Tom to "wash the day off and start fresh". I assume this was all the same day.

Night One: S/S/J wait for Jack's team to show up.

Day Two: S/S/J are still waiting. They decide to move the signal fire around the mountains. They sail until they find the docks and come ashore. Ben visits Jack and is told about the sailboat from Colleen. Sawyer and Kate are forced to work.

Night Two: Sayid starts another fire to attract the Others. They come and take the boat. Sawyer and Kate are returned to their cages after a day of work. Ben introduces himself to Jack.

Day Three: Sayid/Sun/Jin agree they need to start walking back to base camp.

That seems to be the chronological order, but that's not the way it seems to be happening in the show. If I'm remembering correctly, some things that happen at night are happening while other things are going on during the day--it seems like the boat attack and the day breaking rocks are simultaneous.

i would have to agree. If you think about it Colleen tells Ben about the boat before sawyer and kate are taken to work and then we see them discussing it. Now surely if she can get a team together in under an hour, it wouldnt take them the whole day to find the boat and Sayid, Jin and Sun. It is rather weird and does point to the time being different I think anyway. Bizarre

I dont see any problems. When Colleen tells Ben about the sailboat, its day. She tells Picket about the new mission while they are assembling Sawyer and Kate for their work detail. Meanwhile, Sun, Jin, Sayid are building a fire and preparing for a faceoff. The Others obviously waited until night to infiltrate the boat. At the sametime, Sawyer and Kate are returned to their cages, and Ben makes his offer to Jack. Pretty simple, I think.

But if they waited until nightfall then why was Ben soo eager for them to get out there and get the boat. Surely he would have said have a group ready by tonight.

Yeah. You're right. I was thinking that as I was watching. The switch between night and day was weird. It just kept going back and forth.

And remember in one of the final episodes of the 2nd season, I think it was when Libby was shot, there was another incident of day changing to night in the blink of an eye. Sorry I can't be more specific, but I'm at work and can't rewatch my DVDs. There is also the issue of the weather on the island and it's relationship to the events on the island, IE: it starts raining and someone gets attacked.

On the other hand, I'm sure if the time change was something the production staff is doing purposely, someone in the Fuse group would've mentioned it by now. "Hey, how come it got dark all of a sudden?"

The OTHERS always attack at Dark except for the following when Ethan kills Scott/Steve, then Charlie Kills Ethan, Anna killed Goodwin. I think that maybe thy thought it would be safer to go get it at dark or maybe they had to go a long ways to get it
