The dock Sayid, Jin and Sun stop the sail boat at is seen to be titlted Pala Ferry. The Pala Empire was an Indian Dynasty. There origin is unclear, but are rumored to have oceanic lineage. Their religion was Buddhism, and they produced many scholars and breakthroughs( Hello Dharma ). There leader's successor was even named Dharmapala. I'm no scholar and I'm not sure how deep the connections, similarities or correlations go but thought I'd point it out. Thanks.

It's a reference to Aldous Huxley's "The Island". About an ideal society.

Doesn't the fact that there's a ferry imply a larger land-mass nearby? (Maybe not a continent, but possibly another - larger - island?)

Hmm, interesting. Thanks for sharing that. Namaste is Indian too isn't it? Seems like it could be connected.

Michael's little gas burner certainly won't get far if there's not a larger land mass.

I have to agree with you, I think we are dealing with not just this island, but a group of islands. Possibly somewhere near Hawaii?

No I think the same as some other people in this board, Walt and Michael are probably on their way to another island via the coords they were given, and I think that we will see the other islands or one of them in the near future.

The farry could have been used to get passangers from the dock to a boat to large to dock.Cruise boats commonly use farry's when the docks are full.

Couldn't the "ferry" be the submarine that takes you to the underground Hydra hatch?

well it does seem weird to have a fairly elaborate dock, which could hold numerous boats, and yet we havent seen the others have one boat at all yet.

I don't think that the Hydra Station is completely under water. I would say it's partly under water...That would make it easier for Ben and Juliette to go to and from their Island Suburbia homes.

Ferry impies scheduled service between 2 or more places. That would tend to indicate a nearby island or port exists. Possibly the Hydra station or even just around part of the island to another dock. The episode with the Pearl orientation which mentioned the Pala Ferry as being used to take people to another site did not identify whether that site was on or off island..
Cruise boats commonly use farry's when the docks are full. They also are more likely to call those boats a launch or launches not ferries. Although they may use ferry as a verb in describing what they do with the launch.

One possiblity that I have not seen listed in threads about the dock is that one of the Other's may have both a sense of humor and have read Huxley's book "Island". Thus the Pala Ferry sign may have been installed only as a dock workers joke.

We also do not know the depth of the water at that point. Could be shallow up to the end where the boats actually dock.

Was on a cruise once to Mexico. There is a town there with a dock that is over a mile long. Water is too shallow for large cruise ships, so they extended to docks out to where the water is deeper. Same may apply here.

Two things stood out to me in this eppy that I haven't seen mentioned yet (maybe they have and I just missed them - if so, my bad). First one was in the opening scene we see Colleen climb down a ladder to tell Ben about the sailboat, which indicates that they are at least underground if not underwater. Second is when the others took the sailboat, they could not have walked onto the dock without being seen by Sayid or Jin, and they did not appear to be wet. Either they have another small and silent watercraft (I'm hesitant to use the word submarine) or there is a hatch that is hidden just under the dock.

I figured that the Ferry was meant to run to and from Otherville. Didn't the Pearl video say something about barracks? That would explain the communal shower Kate was in.
