i think its either the polar bear or vincent, either of them in some form that we are not familiar with. who knows, though, it could be anything.

I always thought some kind of ghost that came from of all the dead people from the ilsand's past was making up that smoke.

when Locke came out of the sweat lodge, I thought I saw the smoke monster bullrush Locke in the face for like a 1/10th of a second. there was the image of a polar bear in it, but it may have been just the end of the vision warning about the polar bear.

lots of people said the horse, or the shark. but i dont know.

didnt tptb say something about the pilot episode too

i think it takes many forms besides the hostil smoke form. how else can it shred people to bits? Jacks dad, hurlys dino bird kates horse ect ect. though it probably roams about the whole island as it only randomly appears, and as it seems its a f'n big island.

Sometime late in Season 1, my daughter had a theory that the monster could metamorphose itself into objects, animals, or even people. She thought THAT was why some of the Losties acted so differently from epi to epi. I thought that was pretty imaginative for a 10-year-old!!! :biggrin:

But it is a pretty cool idea ...... ;)

Spoilers given by Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse: The smoke monster will definitely be back in Season three. There is a good chance we saw the monster this year and didn't realize we were looking at it. By the end of next year we will realize what it was and when we saw it.

I'm sorry, but I really think your theory is a stretch. It's a SMUDGE. A barely-not-in-focus smudge. Because it's a tree. And the top of a tree. And it is moving.

TPTB have never included a tiny detail such as this -- ENTIRELY forgetable and unnoticeable -- and later been like, "See, it was there, you guys just didn't notice!"

I think it's MUCH more likely that what Damon meant was that the smoke monster will or already has been seen in a form other than smoke.

I heard they didnt want to pay the smoke monster in season 2 and he was thinking of going to the big screen anyway.

They should have given it the private trailer it was asking for.

It's not a theory, it's a screencap, it's evidence.

It's a SMUDGE. Clear, detailed, vibrant color in every other part of the frame except for the top of the pine tree?

A barely-not-in-focus smudge. Everything else in the frame is in focus, from the closest object, ie:Julie, to the furthest, ie:the plane, except for the top of the pine tree? Note: The entire frame is affeceted by motion blur caused by the movement of the camera. Do not confuse motion blur with being out of focus.
Because it's a tree. And the top of a tree. And it is moving. The tree isn't moving, the camera was panning, as noted above. However if you were implying that the top of the pine tree was swaying in the breeze, I'll give you that, but that would make this the first time in history that a breeze, caused an object to actually change color.

i would have to agree and say that it is clear in those screencaps that smoke is in the high boughs of the pine tree! Good catch!!!!! 5 stars!!!!

Guys, the monster is obviously somekind of force that can manifest itself into peoples different fears (and other things who knows) Hence why Jack saw his dad in season one lerking at the treeline, why Echo thought he saw his brother, and Hurley almost tricked into jumping off the cliff.

im pretty sure were suupposed to think the smoke can manifest itself as those who have died on the island, have we seen it become anyone but dave whos body was not on the island, i might be wrong but the smoke definately morphs into some things like ekos brother yemi, prob jacks dad christian, and boone to locke ... thats where weve seen the smoke monster ... this is out there but ... i was thinkin when they burned colleen or w/e her name is, the dead other, maybe they burned her body so the monster cant use her body .... jacks dads body was missing, when eko returned to his brothers body it was also gone ... unless it was animals eating bones it was the monster ... maybe the others know bout the monsters ability ...

^ thats true. Freeze framing just afterwards shows a black object swooping away. :)

It -is- a bit darker, but its just a tree to me. Seems a bit odd to hide it there though..

The thing is that everyone is showing where or what it does, but i haven't seen a decent theory on what it actually is.
