View Full Version : Why they are needed
LockeLove 10-25-2006, 11:13 PM In today's episode Jack realizes that he is needed on the island in order to "fix" someone.
Towards the end of the epi, Ben tells Sawyer that he is needed. (or something to that effect)
I think Ben is the person with the tumor and obviously needs Jack to heal him. However, he needs Sawyer since he is a good conman to continue the mission of the Others. Kate would then take the role of Juliette.
As an aside, why would this person still have a tumor? The island healed Locke from paralysis and Rose from cancer, so why not heal that person from a tumor?
MinnieVanMommie 10-25-2006, 11:17 PM The Losties are going to be conned...by Sawyer....
They losties must have something that the Others want and need. The only way the others are going to get it is by being conned by a person thedy trust. The others will play Sawyer...gain his respect in the con game...give something to Sawyer (His ability to see his daughter???) and than have Sawyer con the losties...
Amber 10-25-2006, 11:19 PM True, true. I really don't have any idea why Benry would have a tumor. I think it would be a nice twist if they took x-rays of Jack while he was still all drugged up, and it was his tumor. Jack is in his late 30's afterall. Oooooh.

I ilke the way you think
SLAVEMOM 10-25-2006, 11:32 PM He needs Sawyer and Kate for the reasons that Sayid explained. To make Jack operate and care for Henry.
jennylee27 10-25-2006, 11:41 PM Interesting thought on Sawyer conning the Losties. I can't figure out what they would need from them though. A specific person, like Aaron? Golf clubs?
Do they need anything from Kate, or is she just a weapon to soften up Jack and Sawyer? Is the fertility doctor going to try to get her pregnant with one of their children?
Diesels Blitz 10-25-2006, 11:54 PM If Ben has the tumor, he isn't healed by the effects of the Losties island because the Others are on a separate island.

I guess they don't know much about that other island then.

I originally thought this, but now I'm not so sure. They've hardly said anything about Sawyer and Kate to Jack, other than to tell him they're safe. Ben's already thrown a very enticing offer on the table - the offer to go home. Are Sawyer and Kate just insurance - if Jack doesn't take Ben's offer, then he will threaten to hurt them if Jack doesn't cooperate? I don't know if you caught it in tonight's episode, but as Jack was eavesdropping using the speaker, I definitely heard someone say "It was a mistake to bring those two." (I believe this is the scene - I know I heard it!) I'm really confused as to what purpose Kate and Sawyer are really supposed to serve. They've just been treated like slaves so far.

Wow, that would be really interesting if that was said. I really hope Kate and Sawyer get to go "home" next week.

Ummmm, decent theory but Sawyer doesnt want to see his daughter. He didnt want her to know where the money came from. Furthermore, I think Sawyer needs a much better reason to get on board with the others. What has happened in the past when people have tried "tough love" with Sawyer and after that he didnt just fall in line with whatever people wanted. It hasnt happened yet, and I certainly dont think it will happen here.
FishBiscuit 10-26-2006, 12:14 PM Yeah, I was thinking...Jack's there to be a doctor and prhaps save who's in the X-Ray, Sawyer's there because he's street-smart and can manipulate people the same way Ben can, and Kate's there for coersion because both Jack and Sawyer care for her.

I agree with you, but what if there is an even more simple explanation. Jack is there to operate on the person in the X-ray (maybe Ben or someone else). Both Sawyer and Kate are to be blood donors, both have type O blood and Sawyer is a super-healer.
nerdomatic 10-26-2006, 12:36 PM Perhaps the island is only keeping the person with the tumor alive... if he wanted to leave the island he'd need treatment.
Didn't Ben say he wanted to take Jack off the island and take hime home?
darwindog 10-26-2006, 04:21 PM If Ben has been on the island his whole life, then the tumor grew amongst the island's healing powers.
Think of it like an infection. If you proactivley take an antibiotic every day of your life, and then develop an infection, the antibiotic will not cure that infection. It devleoped despite the antibiotic's presence..
C_Lost 10-26-2006, 04:27 PM If Ben has the tumor, he isn't healed by the effects of the Losties island because the Others are on a separate island.
How about becasue he was born on the island is used to / immune to the effects of the island.
cdhughes4358 10-26-2006, 04:31 PM These are all very interesting posts. I thought the same thing, were those x-rays one of the others, or were they Jack or Sawyers. I hope neither, espically Jack's. I don't want the to kill Matthew off, but I have had this suspiscion they are going to kill one of the main characters off this season.
Now Juliette, she is becoming more interesting. I think she "hates" it there, and hates Ben, but she is just doing what she is told to stay alive. :)
I agree, what purpose is Sawyer and Kate serving? But you know, LOST, it will turn a twist around and around as to "peek" our curosity. :drowsy:

Locke talks of the island like it's alive... antibiotics don't choose which infections to cure... but it seems that island might choose and maybe the island can only work so much magic.
Several have been shot and die on the island without any magical healing. The island supposedly wanted a sacrafice and Boone died but it's healed lock and preserved Rose.
Who is to say the island isn't keeping the tumor from killing this person, but not healing it. At this point can you really say no for sure?

I agree with your theory and would just like to add what Isaac of Uluru said in "S.O.S.", that there are certain areas of the Earth that hold healing properties, but you have to find your spot. After all, Uluru didn't work for Rose, but the island did.
