View Full Version : Who'll stop the rain?

Did anyone catch the freaky rain tonight? In the scene where Kate climbs out of the cage, it is sunny and dry. Then, just as she emerges from the top of the cage, the rain starts. Not a sprinkle, or a downpour, but a good rain. Immediately as she reaches Sawyers cage, the rain stops abruptly. The sun appears to be shining possibly the whole time.

Immediately after this scene, we see Ben sitting at his console flipping 2 of the 3 switches.

Is he controling the rain? If so, why did it start and stop at the times it did?

I was trying to see if the top cage bars looked wet when she returned to the cage, but my tv is from prehistoric times and the picture is lacking in quality. Kate herself appeared to be dry when she returned, when I expected her hair to be at least a bit damp.

Any thoughts on this?

In the previous seasons, sudden rainfall always seemed to appear right before something freaky happened, so I was expecting the monster to appear at any moment!!! :D

1. Perhaps it would be she could get hurt climbing wet bars.

2. I noted last week the strange rain stopping before the police pulled Locke over.

I havent watched the HDTV version yet, but it was raining in Kate's area harder than Sawyers, if at all. When showing Kate, before she climed out of the bars, it started to rain, then cut to Sawyer - no rain. It was almost as if it rained over her cage alone, but again, I have not seen the HDTV version. I am sure it means nothing, but I noticed it.

And what is the purpose of this rain?

I don't know what it means but it is definitely being used as a tool by the writers to express some type of symbolism. The sudden starting and stopping of rainshowers (which also occasionally precede weird, freaky events) has been a part of the show ever since the Pilot.

If we could figure out the greater meaning of the rain, we'd probably have our biggest clue to the mystery of LOST.

I'm still wondering what happened to the Monsoon season that Arzt was talking about. I can't belive that they just dropped it. It could have been interesting.

For some reason, last night, I was wondering about the monsoon season too as I watched Kate in the sudden rain and then the downpour on the beach. Maybe Benry knows a secret about the weather patterns in and around the island(s)! I'll bet the rest of the South Pacific islands were experiencing the monsoon season! Happens every year...

Unless they're not in the South Pacific;)

I like this Ben-controls-the-weather (to some degree) theory. I know tropical environments often have funny rain patterns, but really; the rain on the island for this whole show has been a little too sketchy!

The only purpose I see for the rain so far is that it's dramatic, unless it's somehow connected to Smokie - perhaps something to do with the electric and magnetic field generated by a lightening bolt, although we've seen no lightning on the island. Just something to throw out there...

Well now we have, on the beach. That's what was going on with Desmond and that golf club -- he was grounding the lightning.

oh SHUCKS, sorry! Yes, how could I forget, I loved that! I suppose I'll ban myself from posting in the wee hours from now on (why was I up at 6am? my first class is at 11. sigh)

Lol. Well maybe you just second-guess yourself too much in the early hours. I like your theory on a possible connection to Smokey.

I don't understand or have an explanation for some of the weird rain. I do think its primarily for dramatic effect, and emergence of theories about the rain foreshadowing events led to TPTB including more rain. Yeah, tropical island have funny weather patterns (at least in the South Pacific) - I've actually been caught in a quick little burst of rain like Kate's in EMFH. Its the random times when it starts/stops pouring that seem more out of place to me.

I'm still wondering what happened to the Monsoon season that Arzt was talking about. I can't belive that they just dropped it. It could have been interesting.I think "monsoon season" is generally misunderstood. Its about a shifting in the prevailing winds. The reason monsoon season was mentioned was in reference to which direction the winds would take the raft. People tend just to think of the heavy rains brought to the Indian subcontinent by the winds to be a "monsoon" but its more about the wind patterns. In the S. Pacific, such a change in winds would create a wet season and dry season, but the weather is actually influenced much more by the size and geography of the island, particularly the location on the island. So, the idea of the monsoon season wasn't really dropped; it just isn't playing a relevant part in the storyline right now.
