View Full Version : How did Polar Bear get off Hydra Island?
WildCard07 10-26-2006, 01:01 AM If we assume that the bear cages at the hydra station were for the polar bears, how the hell did they get to the main island. I know polar bears can swim but could they really travel to another island with the tide and everything. I mean look how hard it was for Michael to get off the island.
Lost_In_Louisiana 10-26-2006, 01:06 AM I'm assuming they transferred the bears with the Pala Ferry???

Well before we knew about the two islands i assumed the bears escaped. Possibly when dharma disbanded. (assuming dharma is not still around and the others are mearly using what they left behind.)
briar910 10-26-2006, 01:09 AM Polar bears are excellent swimmers. They can swim for miles.
Lost_In_Louisiana 10-26-2006, 01:11 AM I think the real question is, "What did they learn from the animal aggression studies they were using the polar bears for? And did they concoct some sort of medication that counter-acted aggression?"
I've been thinking that the huge needle they were jabbing into Sawyer had a medication in it to make him meek and behave better.
John_Locke 10-26-2006, 01:20 AM Polar bears are excellent swimmers. They can swim for miles. And their broad paws thread water perfectly.
HERMIT 10-26-2006, 02:36 AM Well, these bears are probably super smart. After all, they figured out how to get to the food faster than Sawyer could.
I suppose, rather than swim, the smart bears commandeered a boat off of the dock and figured out how to sail themselves to the other island.
Maybe that's why Desmond's boat was of importance to Ben. The Others still hadn't recovered the boat that was stolen by the bears!
 ok, i'm just being silly.
Polar bears can swim for miles to get to different ice floes in the Arctic, though with recent global warming, some of them have actually had to swim so far between ice that they've just drowned... :frown:

TestMemberSubject 10-26-2006, 02:47 AM "They are the Einstein of Bears". It takes no "time" to get over to the Mainland.;)
sttct 10-26-2006, 03:27 AM I think the REAL question is how did the polar bears get on any ISLAND in the first place. I'm guessing that the Hydra Island is where the scientist observed the Island and it's inhabitants. Notice how the bull horns etc are not hidden on the Hydra Island. I also believed there to be an underwater hatch since the first lady that boone tried to save, the shark and the unknown cable leading to the ocean. No one thought that was wierd? I'm thinking that Ben's "there's no escape" is a ruse and that there is a tunnel that leads to the mainland.

I'm under the impression that the tide carries anything towards the island
JackBauerLost 10-26-2006, 03:48 AM What they have failed to mention thus far is that physically speaking, polar bears are the Summer Sanderses of the bear community. Just not as hot.
NewRave 10-26-2006, 10:26 AM If the polar bears were being kept in cages on Hydra Island, how did they get to the Island that the Losties are on (as seen in the first season and last week's episode)?
boo_boo_cat 10-26-2006, 10:28 AM They do swim.
South Shore 10-26-2006, 10:31 AM They swim like champs!
C_Lost 10-26-2006, 10:33 AM What if there is a land bridge that forms between the 2 islands at low tide..I don't know just guessing.
gusthepolarbear 10-26-2006, 10:35 AM yeah, they can swim really damn far.
South Shore 10-26-2006, 10:37 AM yeah, they can swim really damn far.
And GusThePolarBear would know!
:)
Melikon 10-26-2006, 11:09 AM The Galaga!!!
Dharmatologist 10-26-2006, 11:10 AM That would be my guess as well, they swam over.
However, it's possible that even though they were kept in cages on OTHER island, they may have been given a more free environment on LOST island for observation by the Dharma Initiative. Who knows?
carodeluxe 10-26-2006, 11:10 AM If you're ever in NYC, hit up the Brooklyn Aquarium and see those polar bears swim. They're darned good at it.

Without a doubt.... :)
Fierro 10-26-2006, 11:18 AM I heard polar bears are very good Galaga Drivers
Aphex 10-26-2006, 11:20 AM They probably came from the main island, and were brought to the island that the hydra station is on for testing then brought back...most probably on a boat. but yes they can very well swim.
MadWatch 10-26-2006, 11:42 AM They do swim.
Polar bears are the Einsteins of bears, you know. :hypocrit:

Yup you can see from the village down to the shore and then follow the shore line clear around to a crash site :p
But as far as the body of water shown in this episode, a polar bear would consider that a short swim.

look at where the pieces of the plane land.
that image just shows the settlement, not the hydra station. There's no reason those two locations have to be on the same island.
Polar bears are great swimmers, and who's to say they weren't released onto the main island deliberately. Just because there are cages doesn't mean they would have had to stay in them.
the business 10-28-2006, 02:06 AM polar bears can swim for hundreds of miles at a time. the others dont live on the hydra island.

andylekker 10-28-2006, 11:51 AM polar bears = very strong swimmers
that distance - no problem !
there are records of them swimming 60 miles in 11 hours......
So, either the others released the bears on the island or they broke out and swam to the island? I prefer to think that the others released the polar bears so that they'd attack our losties.
andylekker 10-28-2006, 01:56 PM i would imagine that they had been free on the island well before the losties got there ( years )
but the third scenario is that someone else released them - the other Others ??

Ebdim9th 10-29-2006, 07:27 AM F/Benry told Juliette that the "sub" had arrived (referring to Connie's arrival, so maybe it was a code word for sail boat, but maybe it had a double meaning. Maybe not)
Swimming bears, meet the Dharma shark(s?)
Maybe I interpreted the blast door map in the Swan wrong, but it would appear that the Hydra hatch is on the main island, not on a neighboring one. So either the map is wrong or their playing yet another head game with Sawyer. Or I remembered it wrong, which is also highly likely as well, but in this case, at leas I don't think so...
