I think I'm not alone when I say THIS EPISODE ROCKED! I know some people will be jeeved that there wasn't any beach, but for Murphy's sake they revealed so much stuff it's overwhelming! AHHH!

I don't mind that there was no beach. This episode made up for it. It wasn't quite worth a three month hiatus, but it was still terrific.

The most 'different' LOST episode by far, and you guys did freaking fantastic with the goggle video scene. Brilliantly filmed and atmosphered! Give the film/editing crew my high-five!

Okay, I may have missed the beachies, but I loved it. Loved Alex and Karl (awwww) loved Juliet and how trapped she felt, loved the mystery of Mittlos and what they had done, I loved the parallel between Edmund and Ben. A true redemption story and to find that she had been promised the same thing Jack was really brought them to the same place. Wonderful.

WOW!!! This was a GREAT episode to kick this Second Half off!!! SCORE!!!

I think Alex is becoming my new Shero!!

And what an interesting kick off (sorry for all the football references...) for JullietB]! Her story is so intriguing! I know she wasn't there 3 years because she wanted to be - but I'm very intrigued to know how she got there and why she couldn't leave and what all has happened to her while there!!!

And please may I say this - and I apologize to Pickett lovers in advance - [B]YEA PICKETT"S DEAD!!!!! And I'm so glad Sawyer bounced his head in the cage!!! WOOHOO!!!!

I loved the episode - it showed a whole new light on the Others. From the brainwashing, to who Alex is, to how Juliet got to the island and why she's still there. Lots of info to think about - my brain is buzzing... like Carl's.

I liked this episode a lot. I even got teary about Juliet's story, creeped about by Alpert and Ethan. I was a little overly spoiled, but thank goodness, not as spoiled as I thought I was. Very good episode.

man, that was quite an episode! I had read spoilers before hand so i pretty much new what was going to happen, but it was still powerfull for me. Loved the clockwork orange scene. the movie is my all time favorite and i thought it was just such an awsome homage to it! Loved Elizibith Mitchell. Loved how she played flashback juliet much more mousey and insecure parrallel to cool confident island juliet. Take that complainers! Cant wait till next week!

I missed Lost so much! Great episode to start off with. My favorite part was the scene near the end with Jack/Kate.. very moving! Alex bores me, glad Picket is gone.. the bus scene was great.

I thought it was a very good transition episode, to say the least. Now at least they can start focusing more on all the Losties rather than just Sawyer, Kate, and Jack. And I loved the Juliet flashback! Finally I cared about the flashback as well as what was going on on the island. The first half of the flashbacks were pretty weak.

Wow. Awesome episode. I was so psyched for it and it didn't disappoint - although I was way too spoiled for it. The hiatus was just so long, I couldn't help myself. Gonna try to stay away from the spoilers now that we have a new epi every week.

Loved Juliet's story and I want to know more. Like why after what they did, did she agree to go to work for them?? I'd have been running for the hills! I want to know more about her sister and what was going on with that situation.
Lots of great stuff here in this episode. Loved seeing Nestor Carbonell.
Oh, and Tom is now the King of the "jaw-on-the-floor face". In "I Do" I absolutely laughed at his expression when Jack took over the OR situation - just that dumb-founded, slack-mouthed stare. He did it again tonight and it was freakin' great! Too funny. Oh, and loved his funny little self-introduction to Jack, lol. What was that??!! lol.
Can't wait for next week!!

I'd read the summary and knew everything that was going to happen and still was blown away. Elizabeth Mitchell's got the acting chops they've needed so long for their female characters. The timing of the bus was perfect, even when I knew it was coming I jumped.

I think Juliet joins them because after they show how they can get to anyone, and they know about her sister, she's afraid not to go. I wonder if the X-rays are of one of the infertile Others.

I was spoiled for this episode, but I still really liked it. They did a good job cramming a lot of story into 42 minutes (or however long). So many things to compliment. Mitchell's acting. The writing and filming. I thought the final walkie-talkie scene between Kate and Jack (and the parallel situation between Karl and Alex) was well done, and I usually don't like the sad-inducing scenes of Lost. I also liked the way that Juliet was recruited--the way that her husband was removed from being an impediment was also a signal to Juliet that these are not people to be trifled with, and don't like to hear the word, "no." And the way Alpert (?) put the whole bus thing back on her, "Don't blame yourself." Twisted, in a Ben sort of way.

It was great having Lost back on the tube, and especially sweet having such a good episode to start off the second half of the season. Kudos. Now, back to the beach....

It was a great way to come back from the break! :)

Hopefully next year there won't be a break at all...they'll just do all their episodes in a row like 24.

Anyway...it was action-packed and every moment counted. I loved Alex...it's too bad she has to stay with the others :(. I think what really interests me the most though is the video that Carl was watching. How very Clockwork Orange! WHAT was the point of that? hmm....it's very, very puzzling.

Elizabeth Mitchell delivered a killer performance. I really felt for Juliet for the first time. I think now that Jack realizes he's sort of in the same position as her...they'll finally start to connect more...in whatever way. It's interesting how she seems so weak...and at many points in her life has let others run her over (what was the deal with Edmund) and yet she is also very cold and calculating. Her icy stare is really quite frightening. And she shot Danny with pretty much no remorse.

Excellent episode. I thought I had been a little too spoiled (my own fault), but when that bus hit Edmund, I almost jumped out of the chair. And the questions that that raises like whether or not Juliet's new boss arranged for that accident to happen.

If you leave off the Alex part, I echo your thoughts. Did the bus scene remind anyone else of Final Destination lol? Overall I thought it was a good episode. I stayed away from the episode spoilers and I had a much more pleasurable viewing experience. :)

I just wanted to chime in on this thread too and say how much I loved, loved, loved, loved it! I loved every minute of it. I was also spoiled, but it didn't seem to matter, I was still sitting on the edge of my seat through out nearly the whole thing! I can't wait to watch it another dozen times. Thank goodness for recording devices!

And isn't it awesome how the only villian left on the island was killed. It's hard to think of any of the Others as bad guys as they all had very clear motivations. I can't wait to see what happens next!!!

Ditto. I didn't want to read the summary but "half-caved" but the ACTING in this just blew me away. It jumped right off the screen for me. (Cardie, I jumped at the bus *and* firing at Pickett!)

I think Juliet joins them because after they show how they can get to anyone, and they know about her sister, she's afraid not to go. I wonder if the X-rays are of one of the infertile Others.
I'll bet that's it; the island somehow speeds up the female reproductive life cycle? I wonder if it does something different for men or if women are the only ones affected?

so much good SKATE!!!

Loved the way Alex and Karl so closely paralleled Kate and Sawyer during What Kate Did. That was outstanding. And Kate with her arms around Sawyer's chest, how wonderful was that...

Not to mention the wookie line...best thing ever!!! Almost as good as I Do!!!

Great Show!!!

Great Show!!!

That was great, wasn't it! And I was thrilled to see that Sawyer didn't look jealous (like all of the speculation we had heard) during Jack and Kate's walkie-talkie conversation. Sawyer didn't seem threatened at all by Kate's tears for Jack, but rather he seemed concerned about Kate as he realized that she does still care a lot about Jack. Great moment all around!!!

Fantastic return.

Elizabeth Mitchell brought it home by basically portraying two different characters. Wow. Lots of tension, great interactions with Sawyer and "Sheba", Sawyer and Kate, Kate and Jack, Tom and Jack (TACK anyone?)

Does this mean we are going to see the creepy Dr. Alpert again??

Pretty dang good episode. Elizabeth Mitchell totally rocks. Her acting was so fantastic, and I think for the first time, I felt empathy for one of the Others.

Karl and Alex = awwww :inlove:
Kate and Jack = almost shed a tear
Star Wars bit = AWESOME. Nice to seem some vintage Sawyer

Tom = continues to crack me up. "I'm Tom BTW" lol

Best episode of the season by a country mile. Loved the FBs. Now thats how you write a sympathetic character without taking the mystery or danger away from them. We still really don't know if Juliet is on Jack's side or not, or what shes really capable of.

Favorite moment actually might have been Sawyer bashing Pickett's head into the fishbiscuit button. Big stand up and yell at the TV moment for me.

Awesome ep. I loved it!!!!, I can't wait til next week. What was the deal with the thirty thousand commercials?

Jack was awesome, as always. The end scene between him and Kate was wonderfully done.
Carl is intriguing me, can't wait to see the interaction between him and the other lostaways. Probably a lot of interrogation and glaring.

I hope this ep restored faith to the naysayers. If the rest of the season is like Not In Portland, I don't think we'll be hearing a whole lot of complaints in the future. I hope. I guess it all depends on the beach ep next week.

Jack was great in tonight's episode. I am looking forward to him spending a good amount of time with the Others as he really seems to be in his element. And I am sure we were all wondering what was going through Sawyer's head as Kate was relaying the story to Jack over the walkie-talkie on the beach. A couple of things I thought Sawyer might be noodling about were whether Kate really repricates his feelings for her, and the realization of Jack's sacrifice for Kate and Sawyer on an emotional level.

Kate was great in this episode, too. I have been pretty annoyed with her throughout season 3, but her take charge attitude was really good in this episode.

The best thing has to be the overall creepiness of this episode, though. Ben's character has always been creepy and tonight's epi showed Ben at his creepiest - the drugged face, the slow and deliberate speech, and of course the director's framing of the whole thing within the operating table's headrest opening. When they cut to a commercial after Jack accidentally severed an artery I was pretty stressed. I haven't been that involved in an epi for some time :).

I won't even bother to go into the brainwashing stuff as enough space has been dedicated to that already. Suffice it to say, it was good stuff.

The writing in this episode was solid. The writers have always done a good job with parallels between the lives of their characters in each episode, and I thought tonight's episode was especially good in this regard.

I saw two obvious character parallels tonight. The first was Jack and Juliet being manipulated for their medical skills, their entrapment and desire to get off the island, and Ben's promise to both of them to help them out. The second is the Alex/Carl Jack/Kate stories. Carl is now part of a foreign encampment on another island, just as Jack is now trapped in the Other's camp on "Alcatraz". Both Alex and Kate have similar motivations to take an invasion party over to the other island to save Carl/Jack. And on another level, Jack and Alex both had to sacrifice themselves and send their love interests away to safety while they stayed behind.

I thought NIP was very well done, likely the best ep of the season. I love the return of the mythology component, ala Karl's brainwashing. Great to see one of our losties finally get one over on the Others, as Jack played his hand masterfully to ensure the survival of his cohorts. Loved the pacing and the action, and of course, Elizabeth Mitchell is just exquisite as Juliet. Bravo!

banshee
02-08-2007, 02:42 AM
I thought it was good....I think I need to see several more episodes though before I can feel the show has bounced back from ID. None the less NIP was of quality.

I enjoyed the continuation of the surgery scenario. Best line of the night was "I'm Tom by the way" lol.

I also noted the similarities of the voodoo mind control machine to the X Files episode "KillSwitch" where a computer with a sentient being takes ppl that enter its domain prisoner & subjects them to brainwashing.

I was glad to see the writers carrying Jack's momentum over from the arc. He continues to be one of the highlights of this season for me.

Lastly, I was concerned the walkie talkie exchange wouldn't do the original Pilot surgery story justice, but this is twice now a Jate moment (along w/the Hydra) has managed to be, imo, one of the most powerful of the season if not the series. Great stuff, especially with how well it paralleled what was going on w/Ben.

Fantastic episode! It really picked up with Ep 6 left off!
A funny thing happened while we were watching the ep though. When Danny catches up with them again at the beach, I said, "Man, someone needs to just kill that guy!" Boom! Juliet lets him have it! Then, when Juliet and Edmund are talking, I said, "He'd better be careful!" Boom! Edmund gets hit by the bus. I looked up and said, "I want a million dollars!" Nothing..
The only complaint I have about the whole thing is it was never explained by Danny Pickett hated Sawyer so much. Other than that, it was great and has left us with some intriguing questions for the future. :74happy: :75happy:

It's so nice to post in this thread again, rather than the other.

Lost did come roaring back, with easily their best episode of the season.

I think the writers "got it", and realized that the first six episodes really lacked something. They realized the show needed a shot in the arm, that they were on thin ice with lots of faithful fans at the break, and they responded magnificently.

This may go down as the episode that saved the show. Two thumbs up.

I was completely spoiled for the episode, but was still blown away. Just reading about it doesn't do it justice, you have to SEE it, see the performances and hear the words.

Elizabeth Mitchell was fantastic! I loved Alex's snappy comebacks to Sawyer, the overall creepiness of the episode, the Jack/Kate scene at the end was the emotional highlight and finally Kate is back in full force.

What a great season it will be!

The brain washing was done really well very creepy. Alex stuff was definitly cool quite the warrior on the island surprised she let herself stay thought her freedom would be more important.

Wondering if Kate will keep jack's promise my guess is not because people on island need jack as he is only doctor. Missed the beach but the content and the info was great.

Good to see how Juliet joined the island and that she has so much in common with Jack. Wondering if Ben will let Jack go like he promised my guess is not. Looking forward to the next epi

Correct me if I'm wrong, but they didn't take a break after I Do was shot. Didn't they work right through till near Xmas? This was in the can well before the hiatus set in. I forgot to mention also that I loved classic Kate. The shoot him in the knee thing was great because we know she'd done that before. Sawyer thought she was bluffing. The two of them pulling a scam together with Alex to get into the hatch and rescue Karl was great. They make a great team.

ETA: I also wanted to say this was the best ep of the season becasue the island story and the backstory were both strong. I like TOTC second best but the Jackback made me insane. Juliet's story was truly heartbreaking.

Okay I loved this episode.

The Kate/Sawyer/Alex to save Karl adventure was great to watch. All the wit and snark being tossed back and forth between Sawyer and Alex was funny. Karl being hypnotized in that room is like wtf is going on!

All the Juliet scenes were great. I'm so glad she got a FB eppy. Her ex being hit by the bus was totally shocking. I was shocked when she shot Pickett, but not too much. She looked like she didn't like him much anyway lol.

Jack was soooo good last night. Well he is all the time. He didn't take any lip from anyone and he tried his best to take charge of things. He's just trying to understand what in the world is going on!

Great eppy, so glad there's a new one next week.

This was absolutely one of the best LOST episodes ever. I loved it! It had all the classic elements of LOST: suspense, choices between good and evil, character development and relationships, and that scene in which they rescue Karl from the brainwashing room was soooooooooooooooo "Clockwork Orange"/Dharma Initiative/Otherly and, for me anyway, it answered one thing with complete clarity: no matter how the Others try to spin it and/or really believe is true about themselves, they are NOT "good people"...or, more accurately, even if some of them are good people, as a group, they are engaged in doing very, VERY evil things. It doesn't get much more intentionally evil than that brainwashing scene! Someone or several someones at the top is/are NOT good people!!! And it was so well done, SOOOO chilling. Like I said, very "Clockwork Orange".

It was great to see Alex again, as I just love this character. She is so heroic, I think. I can't wait for she and Danielle to find each other someday...I really hope that will happen. When she looked towards the main island with such longing in her eyes to go with her boyfriend, I could almost feel Danielle's eyes looking out in the other direction, with such longing for her daughter and thinking she will never, ever find the baby that was taken from her so long ago...POWERFUL! Sawyer was at his best with nicknaming people, being quite heroic himself, even though he hopes no one will notice that (lol), and of course being gorgeous and hilarious somehow even in terrifying situations. Jack was heroic, Kate was heroic, in fact, all our core characters were heroic last night, definitely in "live together, die alone" mode.

I just thought this episode had it all: great writing, great acting, great casting (I can never get over how splendid the casting is for LOST), great directing, great story and character development--omg! The ABC advertising slogan in the recent promos says "This season delivers..." and they weren't kidding! This episode delivered. There aren't enough superlatives to heap onto this episode, so I'll just end with: this better get an Emmy or several. If not, there is simply no justice in this world.

LOVED IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I liked the episode a lot. I think it is going to lead to a major confrontation in the next couple weeks like the teaser showed. I am very interested in Alex. Juliet called Ben 'her father.' That could mean that Ben is posing as her father and Alex doesn't know her mother exists, or that Ben and Danielle were on the doomed expedition together and Ben is her actual father, or Alex knows Ben isn't her father and longs for her Mother on island 1. If the 3rd is true, why would have she been compelled to stay behind? I've seen all the episodes and I don't remember a clue to this mystery. Anyone have anythoughts?

I was wondering about the Ben-as-Alex's-Dad thing, too. My understanding was that Alex's biological dad was Danielle's love and fellow science expedition member. Danielle, imho, is apparently NOT an "Other", thus I do not believe that the "science expedition" they were on had anything to do with the Dharma Initiative science experimentation--at least not as far as Danielle knew. The rest of her team were all killed by "the sickness". Ben is not the person Danielle loved because, remember, she caught him in the forest and was sure he was an "Other". It didn't seem that she knew him and it certainly didn't seem that she loved him. If he had been her lost love, even if for some reason she detested him now, she would have questioned him relentlessly about Alex's whereabouts. No, I don't think he is--to Danielle's knowledge--Alex's biological father. However, perhaps--since the Others obviously do experimentation that has to do with reproduction, as we learned definitively in this episode, maybe Danielle was unwittingly impregnated by Ben and was not carrying her lover's child, as she thought. Maybe that is why the Others took Alex, because they just view Danielle as a breeding station for Ben's child? But I think their reasons for taking most of the children they take is different, so I don't know. I think it is likely that Alex is the child of Danielle and her lover, but that Ben has just raised her as his own...still, it is an intriguing notion that maybe she is his biological daughter and it would fit in neatly with the reproductive experimentation. I'm glad you brought up this Q about Alex's paternity, as I was wondering about it, too. This episode solved a few mysteries for me, yet brought up several others (get it, "brought up several others"??? Pun alert! ...moving along). Yet another way it was a classic, vintage LOST episode! Man, it rocked!

Holy mother of public transportation, Batman! :jawdrop: I nearly dumped by little doggy off my lap when that bus hit the deliciously, pompous now very dead ex Mr. Juliet Burke. Talk about well deserved deaths in this episode. ;)

What a fantastic episode to mark the return of Lost. Well written, well paced, well performed...and it threw the audience right back into the thick of things by actually putting the story that needed to be told on the screen. I saw no traces of the very questionable...no, flat out hack job of editing that plagued far too many episodes last season (think of the season finale...a crime) and unfortunately during the mini-arc (think, 'FI' and 'TCOL'...heinous crimes)

My brain is still trying to process everything for a proper review. But in the meanwhile, I'll touch a few things that I have taken in.

First off...Elizabeth Mitchell. I must applaud her performance last night because it was nothing short of brilliant and flawless. She commanded that episode like the professional she is, and she didn't allow her spotlight in no way to be robbed. Even in Juliet's weaker moments, Elizabeth let it be known (quietly, but not selfishly) she was definitely driving this train. Not Emerson, Fox, Holloway or Lilly could touch her last night. So, bravo Ms.Mitchell...and welcome. May you stick around for a long while...you are quite a delight, and an absolute joy to watch.

Ethan...oh, how fabulously sinister and creepy, you are. I'm so glad the writers aren't giving that character an out on being evil. None of this, "Oh, he's just misunderstood" mess. Not every character deserves, or needs to be shown in that light. He's creepily wondeful, and that's just the way I like it. ;)

I've never seen 'Clockwork Orange', but I've read several posts across the forms making reference to it when we Sawyer/Kate and Alex find Karl being brainwashed. I may be off base here, but I thought Sawyer's reaction was rather interesting. His expression almost registered recognition. Whether this was something that's happened to him at some point, or the messages that flashed across the screen especially "We're the cause of our own suffering" could have struck a cord with him. It's hard to tell, and ultimately, it may not mean anything more than him trying to figure out what was going on and simply got caught up. We'll see.

Tom: I want to dislike him, but I can't. Maybe it's MC Rainey (I think) playing a gay man--and the fact he's so ridiculously genius in the way he goes about portraying his character that gets me. Whatever it is...I really like it.

Kate reciting the story Jack told her on the beach in the pilot was really a moving, beautiful scene. I enjoyed the way that was portrayed--and the quiet way Sawyer told Kate they had to go and she nodded. Isn't it great when grown folks act like mature adults? It makes for wonderful cinema.

Ah, but the final scene when Juliet told Jack what Benry said...priceless. I have to admit, I chuckled inwardly at the irony when Jack told Juliet that ever everything he's gone through, he deserves to know. Images of fruit plates, cheeseburgers, soup, bottled water, grilled cheese sandwiches and a nifty new outfit to attend a funeral came to mind in comparison to daily beating, slave labor, fishbuits and water out of a rusty pipe. (channeling 'Battle Star Galactica and an ever so presumptuous Gaius Baltar moment) However, in an effort to avoid a mental argument with myself, I pushed the comment aside and concentrated on Juliet who was ever so graciously (and quietly) putting all her broken, emotional pieces back in their rightful places. Her words may as well have been another well-placed punch, because she absolutely floored Jack when she counted off the years, months and days that she's been a prisoner on that island...just like he is now.

Excellent!

The best part of this episode, in my opinion, was in her flashback when she told Mittelos in tears that she wasn't a leader, she was a helper, and then it immediately changed to real time Juliet with such a leadership stride and intimidating look on her face that it made me gawk in awe. Perfect performance by Elizabeth.

Honestly, this is (IMO) the best flashback since season 1. Other then desmond's of course. Elizabeth Mitchell did an amazing job, she made me love Juliet even more. Her story is so sad, and I felt really bad for the character. In the flashback of course. The others made her into a killer, really, and I love how different she was before she came to the island. I really hope all of the episodes are like this from no on because this made the mini-season worth it. Definitely worth the wait, and the only episode I haven't posted in the"Didn't Like" section for this season.

Woohoo! Our castaways and their adversaries are back in style!!!

This episode was just great. Elizabeth Mitchell is amazing !!! kudos! that kind of acting you dont get to do in normal shows. I now understand Julie/Juliet ten times better.

She was a weak, loyalty torn, unsecure woman before life on the island. During her stay there..she has changed. Shes now asserted herself and the killing of the late Pickett, proves it. She choose sides then. And it might be this will affect a future episode...im almost certain it will. Her sisters disease and pregnancy gave her the opportunity to work with Ben's people...

Mr.Alpert/Albert and Ethan, although they may have forced her to make such a descision, i felt they was there to recruit her in a friendly manner.

And since that moment, up untill she tell Jack about her years on island, she has been changing...very good tv, taking the viewer so close to her change, with such clarity.

The thing Ben told her could just be a lie she told Jack to hide the real thing Ben said.
We should learn more sometime in the near future.

And then there was Kate and Sawyer...Cage Fight 3000!

Action-Kate... is so powerful and tough.. so much better then the Hurt-in-Life-and-Love-Kate. Sawyer's remarks sits like a bullet... calling Alex Sheena, queen of the jungle...had me laughing hard. Tom puzzles me...

They're all back... good as ever! hooray for Lost!!!

I'll go as far as saying that this was the best Lost episode ever.
For my liking, at least.

I read spoilers. Yes. I couldn't resist. I read the whole episode summary. And still - I was blown away. I knew most of the twists, but I was still shocked by each of them.

Actually, I think it's safe to say: the episode lived up the hype. It's a rare thing! Not only for Lost - for 24, Prison Break, Heroes, House, whatever. Every show or movie.

Despite all of the spoilery lost moments, the uncountable amount of promos, the episode was still punching me all over my couch. I was thrilled, I was on the edge of my seat, I was blown away. Completetly.

Okay, now it's not the action that made the episode for me. Because Lost is my favorite show - and there's not much action in it usually. But I gotta admit; the action was a nice, enjoyable addition.

The drama was golden. All of the scenes in the surgery room were brilliant. I loved Tom - which is funny. 'Cause just think: ~2-3 weeks ago(island time) he was threatening to kill the 'losties' if they cross a borderline. Now he's saying he can't stand blood, and tries to make friends with Jack.

Obviously, Ben's awaking was one of the best parts of the episode. I thought he was really fair there by letting Sawyer and Kate get away... and basically Juliet.

Yes, Juliet, well, her story was really interesting. I believe that the XRay she was shown is someone from the island - but this might be a little far fetched. However, in her past, she was a contrast of her present self.

the ending gave me goosebumps. Bla bla. I could go on and describe every scene, but why? Everything was good.

Kudos to :

Elizabeth Mitchell, Matthew Fox, Josh Holloway, Evangeline Lilly, Michael Emerson, Zjelko Ivanek, MC Gainey... and every actor starring in the episode

also to the great writing: Carlton Cuse and Drew Goddard, and the great directing: Jack Bender.

Keep this work up.

As unsatisfying as the mini-season was (I thought it could have said a lot more and killing Eko so pointlessly was dumb), Not in Portland was really, really good. I'm totally hooked again. I'm just hoping that we keep up this kind of quality, as some of the episodes from the mini-season really did feel like filler.

I loved it too. Even though I am a bit tired of the Trio, it was really nice to see how the whole Ben surgery/ Kate and Sawyer escape played out. It was so cool to see an Other fb. I was shocked for the first time in awhile when we were led to believe that Juliette and her sister were on the island only to learn they werer in Miami. It answered questions and raised a few more (like what is the association with Dharma?). I was really impressed. I hope the rest of the season is just like this. Plus this eppy made me like Jack even a bit more.

I always get a little concerned when the critics start talking up an episode of "Lost", especially an episode that serves as a premiere. It's hard for the writers to live up to the expectations of the audience as it is, even if they have gained credibility for wanting to set an endgame in place. But when the expectations are raised so high? It's tough. That's why I was happy to find that the praise was warranted. It may not have been a perfect episode, or even likely to be the best of the season, but it was definitely worth the wait.

Here's my review for Lost 3.7: "Not in Portland":

http://www.entil2001.com/series/lost/season3/lost3-7.html

Overall, this episode provided a neat conclusion to the introductory phase of the season arc by bringing many issues to a head through exploration of a single character. More information is revealed about the goals and scope of the Others and the parent organization behind them, which is always welcome. The stage is set for some serious complications in the near future.

For so many of the above mentioned reasons, I thoroughly enjoyed this episode! But what really made me LOVE it was that our team scored. . .FINALLY!! I was so tired of our peeps getting whipped and outsmarted epi after epi...I went to sleep feeling quite satisfied! And woke up wanting to rewatch it.
As for all of the commercials...bring 'em on! The fact that advertisers want to be part of this show is a testament to its popularity and will give it staying power. I can live with that;)

Thoroughly enjoyed the weird stuff. Ethan = creepy goodness. Ethan + new MITTELOS guy = creepily fantastic. Bus "accident" was jarring and awesome. Juliet is interesting now because on the one hand she is essentially in the same boat as Jack, but on the other she has way to much expertise wielding a firearm. Keep the "weird factor" on high and I'm going to keep watching.

Not the best episode ever, but finally a good one!
Alex rocks,I'm waiting for her to meet Danielle, will that happen one day?!
The Karl brainwashing was...scary,but very interesting. (especially the 'God loves you as he loves Jacob' thing)
Juliet is just great.I've always loved her character and I love it even more now.I can't wait to see what's gonna happen to her after the bang bang into Pikett's chest.
Needless to say , the walkie talkie scene between J/K owned me. Beautiful, intense and emotional.I cried. He. Great thing make Kate choose certain words and hiding behind the story of the 16 years old girl Jack operated, while she was actually talking about herself.Brilliant.

What an amazing episode!! Juliet's backstory was great! Elizabeth Mitchell did a wonderful job! Ok and her ex getting hit by a bus?? That kinda rocked.

I absolutely loved the interaction between Tom and Jack...that's going to be fun to watch! Tom is kind of hilarious. And Jack of course was awesome. I still don't think the full weight of what he did for Sawyer and Kate has hit them yet. I mean almost with Kate when she was telling the story but I think when/if they get back to the beach is when we are truly going to see it hit home.

Speaking of the walkie talkie scene a lot of people have mentioned it already and I have to join it. Such an emotional scene. It was beautifully done. The parallel between Kate and Jack and Alex and Karl and of course the surgery crisis with ben! That was emotionally intense. Kate almost broke my heart with that. Well done Evi....well done.

And onto Kate, it was so great to see her back in action mode. The mini-arc was so disconcerting for Kate lovers because instead of the Kate we all know and love, we had a submissive almost zombie-like Kate. She had been broken. So I'm really glad to see her come back from that!

Sawyer was funny and definitely gave Pickett a much needed beat down, though I was wondering why he seemed to so quickly be mesmorized by the creepy brainwashing movie....any chance he saw it before he was put in a cage? Hmmm...

We very much enjoyed it, but we've been enjoying this season quite a bit anyway. What I liked about it the most was there were a lot of interactions and a lot of action, but I didn't think that it answered too many questions. There's still so much territory to cover this season...and next..and next? (A girl can hope!)
My favorite part was the awkward introduction by Tom! Too funny!

Trance.....males....beta waves... it induces a sort of hypnosis. Hell, I sat there like a turnip after 8 bars of it it was so thumping. Perhaps there was some deep subliminal stuff in the visuals too, or maybe we just got to see what Sawyer looks like when fast forwarding adverts.

I watched this episode with my brother and some friends, and bro declared the walkie scene "melodramatic". I enjoyed it, though. ;)

Juliet is fast becoming a favorite for me. Elizabeth Mitchell brings so much to an already intriguing role. The flashbacks were well done, the island action great fun, and I felt that overall it was a very solid episode.

Why is Juliet there? Is the island population unable to conceive? Could it all tie into the larger goals of the Others? Repopulation under certain conditions to further the human race in the event of a global disaster?

Lots to chew on. I'm looking forward to the remainder of the season.

He is frequently cast as political or business middlemen of corrupt, shady natures who often end up stabbing somebody in the back.

I think this would have been a better fall cliffhanger than the one we got -- which actually wasn't much of a cliffhanger.

One thing that made this episode so much more enjoyable than the previous six was the flashback. The flashbacks in the first six episodes were utterly redundant and unnecessary. This flashback with Juliet gave us new info which was actually relevant to the current island story.

After the disappointment of the mini-series, I'd nearly given up on Lost (and I know people who did stop watching it). But now my faith has been restored. I just pray that after the brilliance of this episode, they don't veer back into the "romance" storyline again, and really keep the action moving.

Well, flashbacks for a new character or a first-time character are always the best because we know absolutely nothing about them. I'm guessing Ben's flashback (if there ever is one) will be just as intriguing. I think we all remember the very first flashbacks for each of the Lost characters, and loved them. I am not yet tired of the flashbacks, but I do think the writers need to move on from what we already know about them and shorten the length of the flashback. Just because a new Jack or Hurley or Locke flashback is coming up, doesn't mean it will be redundant. (I'm hoping.) If it's a flashback that provides new insights or information, I'll be happy.

I don't mind the romance at all, but I agree that it has to be distributed evenly on the show. To me, Lost is first and foremost a character show, not a mystery show, which means that romance, angst, and drama will always play a central role. I enjoy Lost because it's everything in one hour: drama, romance, action, mystery, and some humor.

I personally loved 'Not in Portland'. Elizabeth Mitchell did a stunning preformance as Juliet in the flashbacks and on the island as well. I really look foward to her flashbacks she could have in the future. (As some of them might have a few answers stashed in 'em ;)). The Tom and Jack interaction was really great as well. The "My name's Tom by the way" made me chuckle. Sawyer's lines ("Don't get mad at me, just 'cause you were dumb enough to fall for the old Wookiee prisoner gag.") were hilarous in the episode and the interaction between him and Alex were awesome as well.

The only thing I can complain about is the fact that the beach characters were not in it. But that doesn't take away any of the awesomeness from the episode. None of it.

I also loved this episode! It was a long wait, but worth it. I loved how Pickett was shot (about time!).. Carl's brainwashing sequence was eerie and fascinating.. the conversation between Kate and Jack at the end was heartwrenching and so real (and not from a shipping POV; just two characters who care about each other and want to look out for one another)...

Juliet was also very intriguing in this..the scene between her and Rachel where she disclosed her pregnancy was so emotional... Edmund's death was heart-stopping! I screamed when that bus ran him over!!

Great episode.. can't wait for the next one, y'all!

I'm a week late in posting this, but I LOVED this episode. So much to think about.

I loved the first 6 episodes but the pace had slowed and I was ready for a change. And what a change it was! This last episode was a rollercoaster. I can't believe how much ground was covered. How much was revealed. It seemed like it lasted much longer than one hour. Now I understand Juliet's response in front of the mirror and her actions during the book club meeting. In fact I was able to watch Juliet's scenes in all 6 episodes with new eyes.
