my boyfriend and i the other day were waxing philisophical (sort of kidding) but we were talking about deja vu. and i was saying that i beleive that we live our lives over and over again and when nwe have dejavu we're remembering something from before. maybe we trade lives, maybe we stay in the same body, but all the same, I mentioned desmond's catch phrase, "see you in another life, brother" as evidence to my theory and LOOK WHAT HAPPENED!!

Loved it, loved it, loved it!

It will require at least one more viewing to take it in, but wow! I loved the whole solid flashback with just the opening and ending on the island. I wouldn't want the island to get short shrift regularly, but it worked really well for this episode.

It will be really interesting to see where they go with Des in the coming weeks... this ability of his can stand to be a help or a hindrance, and I wonder which side TPTB will fall on?

Damon Lindelof, Drew Goddard (Buffy alumni, woohoo!)
Directed by Jack Bender

^^^ You all outdid yourselves with this one. GREAT episode, I'm gonna be singing its praises for a while. THIS is what Lost is supposed to be.

Continuity porn indeed!

**edit** oh yeah, and a tip of the hat to all the actors and everyone else as well! I need to watch this again.

I think this may be my favorite episode of Lost so far. There was really a lot to love about it. First, there was Penny. Love. her. This episode made Des and Penny's love story much more relatable. It was great before, but it just makes so much sense now. It makes sense that Desmond loved her, and she him. It makes sense that he didn't feel worthy, and that the blasted solo race around the world in a sailboat would make him worthy, at least in his own eyes. And finally, it wasn't Widmore's calling him a coward that broke Desmond's heart, but the fact that Penny said it. That's why that word hits home.

How great was it that Charlie was injected into Desmond's flashback? This makes for one of the most meaningful crosses we have seen to date. It was all about Charlie the whole time, we just couldn't see it. It seemed that Desmond was trying to save Claire or Aaron, but it was always Charlie. Still, we are left with the question, can Desmond change it? When he first regained consciousness, he believed that he could. He begged to go back for another chance to change things. It's after his drinking binge that he loses faith again. He recalls the old jeweler lady's (his subconscious') words, stating that the universe has a way of righting itself. Despite our attempts to change the future, our paths are predetermined. But we are left with the question, are they really?

This brings the discussion of Eko's death at the beginning of the episode into the story in a meaningful way. Was it just his time to die? Even though Locke was able to save him from the polar bears, he couldn't save him from his destiny, which was to die. I think the point is that Locke could only do what Locke could do. The rest was up to Eko. Eko had choices to make as well, which Locke had no power to influence. Eko made a choice, and as we saw young Eko and young Yemi walk away from the camera at the end, I couldn't help wondering if he hadn't made the choice that would ultimately bring him peace.

This was just really tight writing imo. Everything tied together just beautifully. I loved everything about it, right down to that crazy photograph.

What a wonderful and weird episode of Lost--bringing back Penny for Valentine's Day and presenting the most mind-bending flashback of the series. I thought it was entirely off the wall before the ring lady told Desmond that he wasn't supposed to buy the ring. Talk about brain matter on the wall, shapeshifter.

I can't, at this time, wrap my brain around the ramifications of what we saw tonight. I do think, however, that the universe's order can be thwarted--Charlie will live and Desmond will get with Penny again.

I applaud the writers of this episode as well as the actors that play Desmond, Penny, and her father. It was great to see them on the screen again, even though I was a little disappointed because I really wanted to see more of the original cast. However, I enjoyed this episode so much that I can't complain about the lack of screen time for the once-regulars. This was a really strong episode.

It was a risky episode, but the Lost gang pulled it off. I'll be interested in reading other posters' reviews of the episode. Last fall's mini-series was enjoyable, but not quite up to Lost standards IMO. These past two episodes, however, have been particularly good. I hope that the quality of Lost stays at this level. Job well done.

Just read your review, shootfire. It was interesting the way you tied Locke's rescue of Eko and Eko's eventual death into tonight's episode. More to think about.

Charlie's gonna die. Best episode ever. :D

But seriously, it was a great change of pace. Mindblowing, but it still made sense in the end. It was really interesting to see Desmond look at things that reminded him of the Island in his life before getting there.

I'm so surprised by how much better Lost after the hiatus. It was pretty meh before that, but it came back awesome.

I LOVED this episode and am even more in love with HIC and Desmond; my heart just broke for both him and Penny. Sigh......and the end? I was near tears for Desmond AND Charlie. I don't think this means that Charlie has to die; I personally think that predestination is a pretty miserable concept. Why are we even walking this Earth if nothing we do makes a difference or our choices have already been made for us? I can't imagine that TPTB have created this show just to tell us that nothing we do makes any difference, that our fates are already written in the stars. I do think the old woman was wrong. First, if she was his subconscious, of course she's going to say that the man in the red sneaks was basically a dead man walking. She's rationalizing her choice NOT to try and save a fellow human being - that is, why should she put herself at risk for someone she doesn't know? In essence, she is speaking for every human being's subconcious. Fortunately, people also have the ability to be compassionate and it's that part of us that does run into burning buildings to save strangers, etc... Desmond, on the island, rejected this notion by trying again and again to save Charlie. I think that if he keeps trying, eventually the future is going to change and Charlie will not die. It's all about the human spirit not giving up - the future is not written, we can change it. Desmond's humanity DOES have an effect- we are not at the mercy of a cold cosmic fate as long as there is love and compassion in the world.I think this is the central message. I think Charlie will be fine.

I'm confused about the 2nd scene in the pub- can anyone explain why all of a sudden Desmond thought he could change things? I know he mixed up the dates that the soccer team miraculously came back and that guy walked into the pub demanding $, but how does that mean that fate can be changed? Thanks!

Wow, shootfire, you know I hadn't even thought about that, but you're right! Eko's fate may have been to die, no matter what. Although I've questioned in other threads that perhaps there really is a way for the Losties (and Charlie in particular) to cheat death, to alter their own fate; however, the Eko story is compelling evidence that this may not be the case. I feel bad for Charlie if that's true.

OMG! My head most definitely did explode during the jewelry store scene. It rendered me a stammering, stuttering, bamboozled mess. Holy smokes!! I can't wrap my brain around it. And the ending scene - WOW.

Brilliant episode. This sure was the "game changer" that Damon and Carlton had been referring to. Just so well done. I loved seeing that much DesPenny time. I love them and they break my little heart to pieces. The mythology was rocking. Huge Charlie plot coming up. Huge questions that now need to be answered.

Oh, I do think there is a way to change it. My point was that no man is an island. The choices one man makes can only have so much reach. If you keep trying to save someone who is determined to die by the choices he makes, you will just exhaust yourself and accomplish nothing. Charlie has some choices ahead too, I believe, that will either mean his death or his salvation. Desmond can only do so much, just like Locke could only do so much for Eko. I think Betsy was exactly right when she said earlier...

Desmond's humanity DOES have an effect- we are not at the mercy of a cold cosmic fate as long as there is love and compassion in the world. I think this is the central message.

It's just that one person can't do it alone, at least that's what I took away from it.YMMV;)

That's what's so great about Desmond and Penny imo. There's this really epic story with them, and getting to know them a little bit more didn't demystify them. It just made them better. You get this sense that anything is possible for them because of their love, if Des stays away from the liquor! Every time he resorts to the bottle he seems to lose faith in their future, and sabotages himself subconsciously.

Best episode this season, really made me think and choked me up! My head is still spinning from all the twists and turns. I'm pulling for Lost to rise above all the critism, some justified, and make a big comeback! If they continue with interesting, quirky episodes like Flashes and give us some answers to Season's 1 & 2 Island mysteries ratings will go up. I'd like closure to important questions from the past before they add on too many more unanswered ones now.

FINALLY! I get to post in the "Loved It" thread, instead of "Hated it"!

The "old" Lost is back and I'm thrilled. I lived Desmond's flashback with him, agonized over what was happening, and was again on the edge of my seat - which hasn't happened for me since season one.

The final scene of Des with Charlie was a mindblower and I commend the writers for getting Lost back on track. It was good to see more of the original Losties as I was getting thoroughly tired of the "Others". Hopefully it will continue throughout season 3.

Good on ya boys!!

Loved it. What a performance on Ian's part. Fabulous. Mind-blowing story I'm still trying to work through. I liked Penny a lot more than I did before. Loved the Charlie scenes (of course), the puppy faced look he gave Desmond at the end when the big reveal came. i am stunned by how awesome this episode is! I had read spoilers (i know its bad but i can't help it) and thought i knew everything, but even though i knew things, i had no idea how it would come together -- for example, how cool was it that desmond took charlie into the jungle at the beginning to stop him from saving claire. that is so rad. my head still hurts from the implications of this episode (it seems like this is a good version of that hurley episode where they toyed with us by making it seem like there was a big reveal but alas was nothing) so if desmond knows where things are going, does that mean that he knowingly crashed the plane? when he saw jack at the stadium was that like when he saw charlie on the street? 'see you in another life brotha' sounds way different now!

I am so happy. I feel like this was the defining episode for me... After this week, I was either going to quit on LOST forever, or keep on watching. And because of this episode, I am still a fan of LOST.

I agree with AnalogKid--this was the LOST I know and love.

I've been so sick of the show lately, with the extensive Jack/Kate/Sawyer drama and too much of the Others. I just didn't like the direction the show was taking, and how it seemed to be just playing up the love triangle, and everything else was suffering because of it.

But with the return to the beach, I felt a return to what LOST has been for me--a character-focused drama. I saw more ensemble interaction...still not quite where it used to be, but I LOVED the whole Desmond-Charlie-Hurley grouping. It was just a really nice change of pace.

I felt like the whole tone shifted--it resembled more early last season than the beginning of this one, which was a welcome change.

And plus, I am a total Desmond fan.

I think there's an interesting observation to be made. This thread is much longer than the "didn't love it" thread... :-) LOST is back!!

morning, hoping everyone is keeping warm.
this was good epi.. good humor, surprise, and obvious issues many people, if not all of have to face. co worker said it was boring, but when we started to discuss some things, she changed her mind. Desmond, obvious a man of great courage and wisdom, bogged down by wanting other to accept his choices.
again, issues that he has to come to terms with.. I felt sorry for Penny, because she knew what she wanted, ready to face any road block..
it will good to see desmond face these issues again..that the island will give him a chance to make things right.

i enjuyed theshow but I ama bit confused with all that happened. Did he really go back in time and relive the past? When he was knocked out at the end of the show did DHARMA retrive him and place him on the island at the point in time he left? That would explain his head wound and the lack of clothing.

The whole Desmond/Penny relationship is just beautiful and heartbreaking, and I always love a bit of surreal weirdness. And I love time travel stories, so anything remotely resembling it is okay in my book.

When it comes right down to it, I don't care if TPTB ever answer another question about the mythology as long as they give me characters I can love and feel for. Which they did. Finally.

This was what Lost should be, entirely unpredictable with a great storyline. It had me hooked all the way through.

Okay, I did my share of complaining at the end of s3e6, but I want to give TPTB a pat on the back for 2 great episodes. FINALLY SOME ANSWERS! I didn't think I was goign to be happy with an episode that didn't focus on the Dharma stuff, or the hatch, but they did a great job with the Desmond flashbacks, and a little back history on what the heck is going on. Kudos team~!

I enjoyed this ep more than any, at least since Dave, probably back to some of the Season one eps.

So deep with references, easter eggs, plot relevance, philsophical quandry, symbolism, color choices, etc. It wasn't perfect, but it was enjoyable at every level.

The epi wasn't bad...but I wouldn't necessarily call it good (especially when considering that it practically comes out of nowhere--story/plot progression-wise)...risky...but hey I'm optimistic so I'll stick with the majority of the peeps here that said they loved it...acting and writing were good...I think the whole concept could've worked better if it would've been filmed and organized differently.

Lost ratings are taking a hit...should ABC be scared?

i don't have time to get into it, but this was an incredible episode and possibly the best ever, but it doesn't make up for the first six and nothing ever will (whatever events happen in the narrative don't make up for sloppy writing episodically) other than staying on this level of quality.

I've just seen the epi..I'm speechless, it's INCREDIBLE!!! Damon was so right saying that it would blow up the audience's minds! I feel that exact way.

Last night was one of the best yet. It kind of reminded me of Numbers and Raised By Another in the way that it made my head explode. I loved the long flash-back thingy. I also loved the reveal at the end.

This episode affected me in some archetypal way which is difficult to shake. I don't remember being this level of response to any TV episode. The X-files had great episodes, as did Buffy/Angel--but I don't think there was a single episode which hit me this hard. I don't know why. The only one I can think of is the last episode of Twin Peaks which really scared me as much as TV can scare me. One of my favorite books is Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut--maybe it's the sense of alienation, the sense of being "unstuck in time" that's being described. It's also like Lynch's Mullholland Drive--it's the wierd feeling of knowing that you don't know what the hell is going on, and yet it's important and emotional.

So, I loved it--if love means being reminded of my existential alienation.

I love it when the writers take a chance and break format like this. I thought it worked well with "The Other 48 Hours", and this time around, they pull off something even more intriguing. This is one of those episodes like "Numbers" that will have fans talking for quite some time about the implications. More than anything, I love the fact that there's still more than half the season left!

Here's my review of Lost 3.8: "Flashes Before Your Eyes":

http://www.entil2001.com/series/lost/season3/lost3-8.html

Overall, this episode was an unusual look at a character’s past history, this time with more than just a metaphorical link to the action on the island. The writers play with the familiar format in a way that is unexpected and thought-provoking. The implications of this episode are fairly complex, and if handled properly, this should delve into the heart of the meaning behind the series.

I really loved this episode. As entil2001 said, I really love when the writers take a chance and break the usual format of and storyline of the show. This was an amazing episode in my opinion. I really enjoyed the fresh way that they showed Desmond's back story. It was very confusing and made you think. At least to my tired brain yesterday it was confusing :D It was quite enjoyable to me though.

Just refreshing, that's the best I can describe how I seen it.

WOW An episode that tells us what the storyline is about! Wow, a TV show that has a storyline! Not that I understand it at this point (making progress!) but I can tell you my college professor for "physics for the biological science major" would be very happy to see me reading Hawking. Especially given the fact the class was really a dumb down version of physics despite the impressive sounding title. The real name of the class was "physics 101-103 for people too stupid to major in math or physics so they major in biology instead". Now Lost has gone and changed all that. I'm reading physics' books on black holes and bending time. Who'd thunk it? A TV show doing what a college professor was unable to do -ignite the imagination.

I'm revising my theory -Pen and Des are Adam and Eve.

Well written, ambiguous (leaves us all talking) and intelligently themed. Great job.

I've been telling myself that I wouldn't post here until I could wrap my mind around this episode a little better, but after two days and two viewings, I'm still lost in regards to what it all means, or how it will apply not only for Desmond but the rest of the castaways from this point forward. Wait, watch and see, as the saying goes, I suppose. ;)

Having said that, I really did enjoy this episode. The writers really took a chance in switching up their format in utilizing the flashbacks, not only explaining what happened to Desmond after the implosion, but giving us a glimpse of what may be in store for other characters. I will say that I'm finding Charlie increasingly annoying in his whininess. His insistence that Desmond tell him what happened to him after the explosion seemed a bit forced given the fact that Charlie didn't seem all that concerned about what had happened to either Locke, Eko or Desmond right after the explosion when he wondered out to the beach to snuggle up to Claire. In fact, he seemed more concerned about justifying raiding Sawyer's tent for a couple of creature comforts. Delayed reaction, I guess. Eh...just a nitpick of mines.

Anyways, I just hope the writers will be able to tie all the running themes they have going together in a logical, satisfying manner before the series ends.

All and all...fantastic episode...and a wonderful momentum changer.

We truly enjoy it when the show takes an abrupt turn, and this episode did just that. It was unique, as promised and as everyone has said in previous postings, but it was nice to get back to some of the characters on the beach, dig into their backstory and current issues at the same time, and toy with the issues of time, reality, and destiny.
My favorite type of episode is one that leaves me with more questions than answers; I'm a happy camper.

Well, Damon Lindelof & Drew Goddard has done it.
They made my jaw drop, and unfortunately, I still cant find it.:eek2::biggrin:

This was the most confusing Lost episode for me - up to this point. And unlike the other 'confusing' eppies(Numbers, Dave) I think this one is closely connected to the main plot which is just amazing.

Strong dialogues, excellent acting, alot of phenomenal character moments... etc etc :)

I must mention Michael Giacchino, he was incredible... again. Without his score, Lost wouldn't be this suspensful and unique.

And, Henry Ian Cusick really did his best in this episode. I was really amazed. His acting skills are beyond excellent.

This episode was excellent, and is my favorite, so far, this season. It was very well-written and directed.
I was so caught up in the whole flashback thing that I had trouble analysing it....I just wanted to sit back and enjoy it. It reminded me of the first season.

I've got to say firstly that Cusick is a bloody terrific actor. 100% believable.

I felt truly unnerved and disorientated....just like Desmond. Brilliant when the narrative and visuals can convey just what the character is feeling so accurately. It reminded me of the film Jacob's ladder in its "to the left of reality" feel.

I posted this in another topic but I will repeat it here. I thought this episode was great. One of its primary strengths was that it took the flashback format and turned it on its head. Even though we saw a fractured version of Desmond and Penny's story, we saw the story nonetheless. It could have been a straight flashback and show us the "real" events but instead they took a risk and incorporated the ideas of time and/or visions (not sure what it actually was). I really liked that along with the writing of the Desmond character. He acts like I would expect someone in that situation would act. Plus the episode was creepy and brought about tons of discussion which all the best episodes have done.

As to my own idea of what is going on, I think Desmond always had some precognative ability (eg Jack in the stadium) but maybe the fail safe amplified it. I also think the Island ensured his and Locke's survival from the hatch explosion/implosion. Not sure about Eko since he may have been exiting the hatch when it blew. As far as the often brought up question about why was Desmond was naked ... not really sure. Someone on this board brought up the homage to The Terminator movies - when they time travelled, they did so naked. Either that or his clothes flew off when he was ejected from the hatch.

Anyway, a great episode and a great first third of the third season.

Brilliant episode! Cusick's acting was fantastic; really made an impact on me! The scenes between him and Penny were beautifully executed, and very moving especially the breakup. Then the fascinating concepts of going back and reliving; Appointment in Sammarra touch with the whole idea of universe course-correcting and inevitability of fate. Loved it!

Best Episode of season 3. Maybe one of the best 3 or 4 of the series.

I''l tell you how great it was: I've been having a serious problem at home with a recovering drug addict in my family who had a suicide attempt, almost burned my place down, literally tried to kill me, and went on a tirade of destruction forcing me to move out all in the space of a few days and this episode took me away from that pain and lifted me up. It was that great.

The writing, the acting, the production, all note perfect. This definitely makes up for the meandering of the show as of late and propels it into the realm of mythic storytelling. (Not that it wasn't already) And this definitely cements the notion put forth at the end of season 2 that this is actually Desmond & Penelope's tale and the crash survivors are merely peripheral characters in a larger story arc.

This is my first post.

I loved the entire episode from the start to the finish. I'm hoping for the time-travel aspect as I'm a huge lover of Time Travel and find it fascinating.

It was great to see more of Penny and her relationship to Des prior to their meeting in the stadium. It was also good to see that Daddy Widmore was not misunderstood when we first met him in the car w/Desmond but that he really is the jerk that we thought he was. I think that scene between Des and Widmore with the booze was one of the best written scenes I've viewed in a very long time. I was totally not expecting that ... not even from Widmore!

But that scene with Des and Charlie on the street ... when Des begins to get all these flashes of the island and London, Charlie there and on the island, Penny, his tie ... etc, TOTALLY blew me away! It was amazing to watch and I think Ian did one of his finest performances ever in that scene. I could watch it over and over.

I also loved how Dom acted in the last scene when Des tells him he's going to die. I thought it was a really, really good scene for him and he did a great job with his reactions.

I just loved the whole eppy!!
