Looks to me his flashback is immediately after he turned the key, and that he is now in a dream state.

Past-- he went back in time. But I bet you he is going to start jumping forward and back. He will next jump to a possible future of the island-- like Claire getting hit by lightning-- and then he will jump back into his own past again.

I'm thinking maybe it's some kind of hypnotic suggestion, which would be why he's "aware" of being there and it's not a memory. Maybe something along the lines of that movie that Carl was watching before he got rescued.

It's a memory that's been suggested to him via hypnosis. It could even be a false memory or some kind of "wishful thinking" kind of thing.

He's reliving his past in his mind, but not in the real world. Things that happen there don't affect what happens in the present time on the island.

So here's the question... if Desmond is now in the past, with knowledge of the present (the island), can he change the present by what he does in the past? Evidently not, it seems, since he is now in the present ... it think ... but with the lightning rod thing, he seemed to be able to change events in the present based on knowledge he has from the future, so ??? heh, love the time paradoxes ;)

It's the past, but it's in Desmond's mind. Just easing confusion, here. Charlie, like the microwave beeping, are things from his present life making it's way into the interative flashback of Desmond's. It's the past, but not a traditional flashback. It's a flashback that Desmond gets to meddle in.

If Desmond did indeed see Charlie that day in England, he'd remember him when he sees him for the first time on the island. Anywho, take this into consideration to ease confusion. :)

No, people were commenting on the old lady's conversation with Desmond about the red shoe guy. She didn't warn him it was going to happen because he was going to die anyway, if she saved him today, he would die tomorrow, that is his destiny. So people were comparing that with Claire, that he saved her twice, but there is no point, she is bound to die. That is her destiny. So we are speculating that she is the next to go. No hard evidence.

IMO what the flash was telling des was that even though he saved claire or charlie from drowning he can't cheat fate, one way or another charlie will die. Or maybe he is already dead. Just like the guy that got hit.
