View Full Version : The season as a whole...is it really worse than the others?

I thought of this while reading the "eh" thread for "The Cost of Living" and it didn't seem right to post it in there since it wasn't really about that particular episode...

As a whole, why do you think this season seems so choppy and lame (please post only if you think that, this is not a thread about the merits of this season)? Here is why I ask that. I began thinking that maybe I don't have a good feel for the show and how it moves when you only watch one episode a week. I just spent my entire summer watching the first two seasons back to back, multiple episodes at a time. Now that I think about it I remember thinknig a couple of those epidsodes weren't much fun either but maybe I was able to forget about that by watching several at once. You know the good of the others outweighing the bad of the one, or even some good in all taking over the bad in all.

So my point...and I don't have an opinion on this I'm just wondering about everybody else...do you think it's because some of us were used to being able to watch as many as we wanted to feel "satisfied" or do you honestly think the show has gone down? Do you think if we were to get the season three set and watch it like we wanted to that it would seem better? Or do you think the writing/story/acting/you name it is so bad that it wouldn't matter?

Here is all I will say about what I think. I think that it seems choppy and that it doesn't flow well but like I said I have never watched Lost on a week-to-week thing like you're supposed to, I only watched the DVD sets of season one and two. It seems like there are great parts and not so great parts, times when the story is moving and then it seems to stall. I just wanted to hear if anyone else was thinking similar thoughts...

I get where you're coming from with that. I remember watching the BSG 2.5 dvd set and not feeling quite as disappointed as I did with it while watching it live (just the bad run of eps 13-16). That said, I don't think that's the case with this season of Lost. The writing is just so inconsistent and full of holes lately that watching more of it at once isn't going to make it any better.

It is a good point you bring up, though, and one to check on when finally being able to watch as desired.

Back when Season 2 was airing I was one of the many who complained about the show and threatned to stop watching, etc. What changed my mind was the season 2 finale and I could never really stop watching lost anyway. But when I got my Season 2 DVD it seemed like the episodes I thought were bad, were acutally good. Maybe it's because of the wait between episode to episode, maybe it's because there's no commericals, or maybe it's because you see how it pays off in the end but I just thought it was better then I thought-This also had a negative effect as I thought Season 1 wasn't as great as I thought it was when i got the DVD.

I think it seems choppy because you do have to wait instead of just selecting the next episode like you could on the DVD.

Well I'm glad you guys were able to understand what I was saying!! I couldn't quite make it come out just right. I would definitely be interested in hearing someone who didn't watch season three live but watched it when it came out on disc and hear them say what they thought of it but that will still be some time from now eh? ;)

I know how you feel. This is the first season of Lost that I'm watching on TV. I'm tempted to stop watching it, and wait for the DVD's. I'm already in, though. There's no coming out.

Well, I would suggest you watch the show live so that it CAN come out on DVD later.

I think the first six episodes simply focused on one set of Losties, rather than all the Losties as usual. It doesn't mean the drama, action, angst, tension, ect. isn't equally good to the other seasons. I think it just bothers some that other characters haven't been focused on as readily as previous seasons.

To answer the thread: No, the season as a whole (although it's only been six episodes) is not worse than the others.

Regarding the subject of this thread, I think it's a little bit unfair to rate this season as a whole...when we've only seen 6 episodes now. I think it is far too early to be comparing this season to the previous ones.

I too am watching Lost on TV live for the first time after devouring seasons 1 & 2 dvd's this last winter. I am also very disappointed the way season 3 has been developing, or decomposing depending on your point of view ;)

I too have also considered that maybe my prejudice might be coming from my inability to watch eps back to back like I was able to on the dvd's. But you know, the more I think about and the more I rewatch seasons 1 & 2, I don't think it's prejudice at all on my part. I believe that it IS actually just bad writing and planning on behalf of TPTB.

Sure, there were some bad eps in 1 & 2 which had some of the same elements of plot holes, pointless flashback scenes, silly character developments and the goofy love triangle nonsense. But season 3 has just expounded the imperfections of the previous seasons and has made it a means to an end. The overall cohesion of season 3 is practically non-existant and the way TPTB are morphing the main characters is beyond all believability. You know it's sad when some of your favorite characters from the past are now devoid of any of the qualities we came to like about them in the first place. I'm so apathetic about the majority of them at this point, it doesn't matter to me who lives and who dies.

I know that there are people out there that think that all some of us do is piss and moan about this show and that our only entertainment is to rip it to shreds no matter what the writers conjure up. I think that might be true for a very small percentage, but I think overall, the reason most of us are now being so vocal is because we were originally given something that engrossed us, challenged us, and above all, drew us towards characters that we empathized and could understand and possibly relate to on certain levels. That, for me is now all gone. Gone are all the little puzzles and easter eggs that were so entertaining to find and try and make sense of. Now the so-called puzzles we are being spoon feed, which are very few, are lacklustre and forced.

My only hope is that the show does pick up rapidly when it returns. TPTB seriously need to re-evaluate the direction they've now chosen and realise the chemistry that made the show work before. Catering to the lowest common denominator for ratings can only spell certain death for the magic that worked before.

See this is exactly the type of discussion I was hoping to get. Thanks guys for sharing your opinions. :)

I can see why you might think it's because you're now watching one episode at a time instead of a whole season on DVD. If I have the choice, I always prefer watching a series all at once on DVD.

However, I hate to say this, but I've watched each episode of Lost from the beginning as it was shown on television, and if you're finding this season's episodes to be choppy and lame it's not because you're watching them one at a time instead of all at once on DVD; it's because they really are choppy and lame. I don't even feel like I'm watching the same show anymore.

I'm disappointed in season three so far, but I understand that every episode is not going to be a crowd pleaser. I think many of us, myself included, are going to continue watching this season despite our disappointment because we think it's going to get better and because we think the promo's are misleading. I've talked to many that say they watched the "I do" episode because they were hoping that the scene shown in the preview wasn't what it seemed and that they would get a big payoff in the end or a shocker that would leave them eager for the next new episode.

I actually like this season better than the second. In the second season we knew almost right away what one of the big things at the end of the season was going to be, the button. This season is mysterious and we are learning a lot about the others. We found out that the others have a little village, the others don't seem to be doing the things originally done by the DHARMA Initiative guys, the others have a sub and a smaller island, your shoe's untied, and the number one thing we learned about the others is: we don't know what the heck they're doing. Also this season there has been two stories for us to follow. The capturies have been working on escaping and being confused by what the heck the others and the beachies have been going on their own little jungle adventures. So far this season is pretty good in my opinion.

I think it's pretty understandable that people are disappointed in this season thus far, because some of the characters are completely unrecognizable
