View Full Version : The story from the pilot
thatdog62 11-08-2006, 11:20 PM What was the story that Jack told Kate in the pilot? What was he refering to? I lent my season one dvd's out and haven't gotten them back yet. I have heard that "the powers that be" have hinted that we are all missing something big from the pilot. So, could this be it? The story? Help, anyone?
Halcyon 11-08-2006, 11:25 PM I think the story he was referring to was when Kate was sewing up his wound after the crash. While she was doing that, he said that the best way to control your fear is to slowly count to ten, exhale, and drive your fear from you body..
Ladybug_ocean 11-08-2006, 11:26 PM A surgery while he was in residency, he cut open her epideral (sp) something or other and had to sew her back up.

Yeah I think it's the count from five story.
Drugal97 11-08-2006, 11:28 PM JACK: Well, fear's sort of an odd thing. When I was in residency my first solo procedure was a spinal surgery on a 16 year old kid, a girl. And at the end, after 13 hours, I was closing her up and I, I accidentally ripped her dural sac, shredded the base of the spine where all the nerves come together, membrane as thin as tissue. And so it ripped open and the nerves just spilled out of her like angel hair pasta, spinal fluid flowing out of her and I: and the terror was just so crazy. So real. And I knew I had to deal with it. (He's crying). So I just made a choice. I'd let the fear in, let it take over, let it do its thing, but only for 5 seconds, that's all I was going to give it. So I started to count, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Then it was gone. I went back to work, sewed her up and she was fine.
KATE: If that had been me, I think I would have run for the door.
JACK: No, I don't think that's true. You're not running now.
So... what did he rip on Ben?
Interesting that they had that running reference... who knew... eh?
pinkrose 11-08-2006, 11:30 PM I'm not sure if he was referring to the story about the teenage girl's surgery that he almost messed up along with the "count to 5" story or if there's another story that was shown off air. I'm guessing it's that one, but there may be more that wasn't shown. Given the fact that they've referenced that story several times, it's most likely it.
I guess it's possible that he told her something else that the others used to find out more information on Jack for the file. They may have interrogated Kate after breakfast, but I personally don't think that's the case.
ETA: He cut a small incision in Ben's kidney.
thatdog62 11-08-2006, 11:30 PM Thank you so much. I can go to bed now and it won't drive me crazy all night.

waltisfuture 11-08-2006, 11:37 PM KATE: I might throw up on you.
JACK [shaking his head]: You're doing fine.
KATE: You don't seem afraid at all. I don't understand that.

I think we got to see the drapes that Kate sewed in this eppy.
addicted_2_lost 11-08-2006, 11:55 PM Didn't he ask her if she remembered the story so when she got to a safe place Jack would know it was really her? That was my take on it. Sorry if I put this in the wrong thread :)
Lostie97210 11-09-2006, 12:05 AM Maybe Jack did to Ben what he did on accident in the story.
DharmaChick 11-09-2006, 12:33 AM I think we got to see the drapes that Kate sewed in this eppy.I nearly forgot about that! You're probably right. She most likely made the drapes during the time she was married to Kevin.

I know, Kate was quite the little suburban housewife. Very strange seeing her that way.
jacknkate1 11-09-2006, 12:44 AM Yea the point of using that story is that the Others dont know it...so if Kate radios back in a hour and tells him the wrong story then he knows the Others have caught up to them and are forcing her to tell A story..they dont know its not THE story

Yes, it sure sounds like a similar situation - a ruptured (or incised) sac, but in a different location on the body.
Also, remember when Benry asked Jack if he was nervous going into a surgery? Jack said he used to be, but not anymore. As if he were remembering his first solo surgery.
I tend to think Jack chose this piece of information to verify Kate's safety as both a reminder of their rather emotionally deep first encounter in light of what she just did to in effect betray him.
penyours 11-09-2006, 10:59 PM That's a feather in the writers' cap tying in both the drape reference and Jack's first solo surgery, both from the pilot, nice touch.
so whats the point of the reminding kate of the story with running from the others-land ?
YellowTang 11-09-2006, 11:47 PM so whats the point of the reminding kate of the story with running from the others-land ?
She has been afraid.. maybe she needs to count down and then act?
Maybe she needs to run?
More likely, both.
Wdnesday 11-10-2006, 12:32 AM so whats the point of the reminding kate of the story with running from the others-land ?
If she doesn't get away, she makes up a different story and Jack knows she's not safe.
Or, If she is forced to tell the right story, she can still change a small part of the story (say, 6 seconds instead of 5) and he will know that they aren't safe.

Moonlight Princess 11-10-2006, 06:33 AM I think he chose that story for 2 reasons....
1. No-one else knows the story so Jack will know if Kate is being held somewhere if she changes a part of the story
2. He was giving her courage by saying you've let the fear in now count to 5 and let it go.
very-lost 11-10-2006, 10:05 AM But why didn't he also mention Sawyer? He knew they were both together. Is he also abandoning him to the Others so that only Kate gets free?
