I had that same impression...that it was taken from the book of John so that it'd look like the notation WAS for John.

I thought it was in reference to the plane.
did locke tell boon to look north at the plane?

I looked up the reference in the Bible and it's the part where Nicodemus asks Christ how a man can enter his mother's womb and be born again. And Christ tells him that no one can enter the Kingdom of Heaven unless he is born of water and the Spirit.

Perhaps it was Ecko saying that redemption was the only way...

This passage is not from John but Genesis 13:14, which is carved to the left of the passage.
Gen 13: 13-17 reads:

13 Now the men of Sodom were wicked and were sinning greatly against the LORD.
14 The LORD said to Abram after Lot had parted from him, "Lift up your eyes from where you are and look north and south, east and west. 15 All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring [a] forever. 16 I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone could count the dust, then your offspring could be counted. 17 Go, walk through the length and breadth of the land, for I am giving it to you."

Maybe the Losties have been given this island to live forever with their offspring. Ben & company are prompting them to get started on the offspring making.

Anyone catch the beautul beams of sunlight upwards from the grave site prior to Locke reading that! Locke told Eko he saw a beatiful light. But, I think those are directions to Patchy for lock. The sunlight in sharp contrast to the rest of the jungle.

"Othersville" is north of Locke and friends. Ecko is telling Locke to go North......
