"yea i know how to get a fish biscuit"
Him throwing rocks at the cage stimuli is just repetition for him at this point.

Why did he say he kept doing it?

He seemed very bothered and broken at that point.
He doesnt care what happens to him.
He gave up.

He certainly believes there is a point in trying to escape. finding out about the 2 islands thing sure took the steam out fo him. He also knows the one guy wnats to kill him.

By the end of the episode, I think he doesn't want to be used against Kate since it's obvous that's what they are going to do and so would rather die.

He seems broken because he knows they are on a second island and at this time there doesn't seem to be a way off.

but ask yourself this, would you rather be in the others cage getting routine beatings, or , at least be running around looking for a way off the island?

Ironically, Sawyer is the character that has his spirit broken. After being the tough guy, he now seems to not care about living other than for Kate. So there is 2 islands...big deal...there is obviously a mode of transportation. The Others use it, so he should not give up because there are 2 islands.
Sawyer has been terrible these first 6 episodes, and it is a shame because he was a really good character towards the end of season 2.

Sawyer gets routine beatings no matter where he is. He'll come back. He's just waiting for an opportunity.

Well it was obvious he was giving up because there was no way off the Island.

I think women - when he honestly loves them and is not using them - make him vulnerable. Just two weeks ago we see him take his cut of $10M and just put it in a bank account for a baby he doesn't even know is his!!!

He loved Cassidy and I think he just let her "con" him. He loves Kate and I think he just doesn't know how to protect her. But - I think as long as KATE believes in him and he sees that, he might rise to the occasion - at least it looks like he does in February's episode!!!!

I think he was a little irritated for the reasons said above and also, don't forget that in the last episode we saw him in, EMFH, Kate kind of rejected him and didn't escape like he told her to. So I think he was a little snippy with her from what happened before.

There is a way off the island though. There has to be.

I agree, women do make him vulnerable, but as "strong" of a character as he is....he needs to realize he is in a life and death situation and react!

He could also be breaking because Kate seems to still love Jack....and she never really told Sawyer she loves him. but that's just an opinion...it really could go either way right now.

I could be wrong but I believe they exchanged "I love you"s this episode.

I think he was feeling depressed. I don't think it means he wants to die. I think it means that he's lost hope, but no matter what, he wants Kate to live. So if he thinks that his death can prevent Kate from dying somehow, then he'll do it.

The 2 islands thing clearly got to him. And before the love scene tonight, he was probably pretty unclear about whether Kate loves him or not (because she retracted it the other week).

I think Sawyer does care that they are getting to him. But they are getting to him. And he'll bounce back. I know he will. Why? Becuase Kate loves him, and they'll escape. :) Hopefully with Jack in tow.

sawyers line at the begining about throwing rocks at the machine was "Just trying to make me feel like im being productive"

is that the purpose of the machine(other than to reward fish biscuits)

The original purpose of the machine was probably to measure the intelligence of animals by the Dharma Initiative (zoology), Mr. Friendly said the bears figured out the puzzle quicker than sawyer or something like that. (Polar bears maybe)

My take is that Sawyer felt as if all hopes were lost when it was revealed to him that they are on another island; no way of escaping, especially when they do not know if there is a boat available (he's been in the water, so I presume he knows the danger that awaits them). Run on foot? They're on another man's island who probably knows the geographic of the area like the back of their hand, so where can you run? Also, they've been detained on the island with no light of being released in good form (he's taken so much of beating, that must have surely demotivates him too). Lastly, I feel that eventhough previously he wouldn't mind death, now after undergoing so many life changing experiences (and having loved someone), he doesn't think that's what he really want anymore. Just my take :)

Kate is the one who broke Sawyer. Watch the episodes again. He's broken because he let someone into his heart.
