This is what Locke said about Eko's death. What could the reason be?

I hope not, but maybe glimpse of Locke past... ala "the island demanded it" type thing.

Yeah this is what I thought too. Locke got the next piece of his puzzle by using the jesus stick for Eko's gravemarker. Boo! I can take Boone as a sacrifice to the island, but not Eko. But it's just like old Locke; it's all about him finding the truth. Like I posted in another thread, why oh why Locke did you not just read the jesus stick when it hit you in the face?

The reason is he wasn't repentant when he should have been. If he confessed his sins to Smokey he probably would still be alive.

I agree with Hoboken. Perhaps when Eko met the Smokey the first time he was still undecided about his past. But after reflecting on his past some more he decided that he wasn't sorry for becoming a drug warlord, he did it to save his brother. Eko was now at piece with his past. And i'm tending to think that Smokey didn't like that or agree with it...

I'm kinda upset to not see anymore impact with Eko and the fake psyhic's (sorry can't spell it) daughter.......

Um, wasn't the reason he died so Locke would see the instructions to "raise your eyes and look North" on Eko's stick so he can find the other Losties???? Sacrifice one to save the rest, perhaps?

Don't worry--the writers will come up with something. Like maybe the whole reason Eko saved his brother and became a warlord then caused his brother's death then took his place as a priest then delivered the village by killing those thugs then went to London then went to Australia then investigated that dead girl then got on a plane to LA was so that Locke could find out he was supposed to look North.

Yeah, that's the ticket.
100%
P.S. Not making fun of your post, True Blue--making fun of the pointless waste of a great character and the desperation of TPTB in trying to pretend it wasn't a pointless waste.

Eko died because Smokey got pissed.

The reason this is important is because it will encourage Locke to try to communicate with Smokey again, as opposed to everyone else who just sorta runs away from it.

I think that eko got killed by "the monster" cause Sun shot Coline. Dani her husband might be able to control it somehow and that was his revenge. I think the others can do with that thing what ever they want to...

Eko died because the actor portraying him was leaving the show. The writers are just trying to make the best of the situation and to weave his death into the show's fabric somehow by using his stick to guide Locke.

Ha ha no offense taken...it would certainly be silly for that to be the only reason he went to the island...but I think that in answer to Locke's quest for a reason for Eko's death, this would be the explanation.

As to his purpose on the island as a whole, well...he tried to keep the button being pushed...he gave spiritual guidance to some losties....he found the missing clip from the Orientation film...with his help, they found the ?...

The fact that you know the rules and still broke them is not a good way to do things here. I suggest not making that a habit.

I don't think it so. Smokey set Eko's tent on fire so he could die. Eko met Smokey again, when Eko's drinking water. It seemed to me that Smokey would have killed Eko right there, but then Locke showed up and Smokey ran away. All those attempts were made before Eko had a chance to repent. So I don't think the reason was that. I think it is much deeper than that.

The only reason why Locke said that is because Lindelof and Cuse wanted to throw in another lame-inside joke/bow to the fans. With everyone complaining last season about how the deaths of Shannon, Libby, and Ana-Lucia were pointless, this was a clear jab at the people who have been questioning their writing.

I'm all for the deaths of characters, but I really didn't like the fact that they threw that line in their for something else other than plot development.

I meant, as in, TPTB have repeatedly denied it. Not like, "I'm breaking the rules and loving it!" I didn't really realize that that sort of talk was explicitly not allowed 'round the forums.

Truly, a simple misunderstanding. Won't hap'n ag'n, boss. ^_^;;;

i think the reason why eko was 'judged and executed' at that point could be as simple as this.
the island was trying to give locke a message using eko's jesus stick.
thats why it dropped on his head when he woke up.
but locke didnt read the message ( although we picked up on it )

so in order to make Locke retrieve the stick and get the message smokey killed eko - knowing that locke would think to bury him with his stick and then would probably see the 'lift up your eyes and look north' inscription.

My God, andylekker! Good theory... and if that is the case, then Locke's ignorance cost everyone a lot!

I agree with kartevlo... AAA wanted to leave, so he had to get killed off... I also feel he was repentant, at least about Yemi's church... hence he tried building a new one.... remember, in TCOL the Nigerian woman says, 'you owe Yemi a church!" I think that's what he was doing...

As for the 'reason'.. I just hope the 'north' clue is substantiated, and gets them somewhere! I'd hate for it to be another red herring... Eko deserves much more!
