A couple episodes ago Sawyer was reading Of Mice and Men, and the book was referenced throughout the episode. Tonight's episode with the story of Kate and Kevin It struck me as being vaguely similar to one of Steinbeck's other novel's East Of Eden Kate, much like Cathy in the Novel, has committed murders and done many horrible and illegal things. Cathy, gets hurt badly and ends up marrying Adam Trask because he was taking care of her. (similar to Kate and Kevin in this episode) when Cathy finds out she's pregnant, she's desperate to get out of her marriage, leave and get rid of the babies. she shoots Adam so that she can run away and ends up owning a brothel under the alias of Kate. Kate (from LOST), poisons Kevin so that she can get away. Eerily familiar? Any thoughts on this? and did Kate ever go under the alias of Cathy? I somehow remember that, but i could be wrong.

also, east of eden was symbolic. Adam and eve were forced out of the paradise and sent to live east of eden, much like Jack, Kate and Sawyer are now living away from what they knew as peace on their island and are now on the island with Ben and the rest of the others.

sorry. AP English corrupts your mind. we just finished reading East Of Eden and it all seems very fitting.

I hadn't thought of that until now, but I can see a lot of parallels....tho my first thought was Jack and Sawyer as Aron and Cal with Abra being Kate. I think I would just hate to think of our Kate as being as evil as the East of Eden Kate.

i never even thought of bringing abra into this, but potentially couldn't she be like anna lucia? sawyer and jack both had a thing for her, much like aron and cal had a thing for abra. i don't think kate's as evil as cathy was, but the paralells are really sticking to me.

and if abra was anna lucia, jack is definitely aron and sawyer has to be cal because he's sensitive, but overall a bit more militant and not as structured as aron was.

The only Steinbeck I've ever read was The Red Pony, I was just thinking about it because I was going to buy a couple of copies for my kids for Christmas. Now I'm wishing I've read more of his books.

I would have never thought of Ana Lucia as Abra...I think Kate immediately came to mind for me because from almost the first episode, she was torn between the two until tonight. For me, it was more back to Abra knows she should pick Aron because he is the stable one with the good future, but she has the rebellious streak that is attracted to Cal, who while technecally the "bad seed", has the good heart deep down in side.

Did Kate really poison Kevin??? I thought she just slipped a drug in his drink to make him dizzy and fall into unconsciousness for awhile.

I'm not really sure, but it sounded to me like she killed him because she said she didn't want anyone to think that he had known about the fact that she was a fugitive, or answer questions about it because it would ruin his life as an officer. besides, i don't think that there is a poison that erases your memory anything, so she must have just killed him.

whether he's still alive or not, cathy in East Of Eden shot adam in the shoulder to get away, she could potentially have killed him, but he made it through. maybe that will happen with kevin.

I don't think Kate killed him, I think she just drugged him so that people would see that he had not just let her leave. She said something like "people are going to be asking alot of quesetions" which I assumed meant that once he woke up people were going to be asking questions, and her having drugged him makes him appear as if he is a victim, not an accomplice.

However, I think your idea still works, even if she doesnt kill him. The writers would not follow the entire plot, they would just get their inspiration from it.

I noticed alot of similarities in this episode to A Tale of Two Cities. I thought maybe this episode finally explained why the season premiere was titled after the Dicken's novel. (I also posted this in another thread).

The plot of that book involves two men (Charles Darnay and Sydney Carton) who are both in love with the same woman, Lucie Manette. Lucie loves Darnay, but he is taken to prison and awaiting execution. Carton saves his life by switching places with him, and dying for him. He does this because he knows Lucie loves Darnay, and he wants her to be happy.

I see alot of parallels between this story and the Kate, Jack, Sawyer plotline. I think that Jack chose to sacrifice himself so that Kate and Sawyer can escape.
