View Full Version : pregnancy test was positive, no?
saltspringa 11-09-2006, 02:25 AM Ok what am i missing
Kate's pregnancy test had a line in both boxes. She started crying...I thought she WAS pregnant (line in both boxes, hello...)
then she says to hubby "i almost had a baby..."
so...she wasn't?
or still is?
Steph_Bacon 11-09-2006, 02:28 AM I think that according to the instructions of the test she was pregnant if there was a plus sign in the little box, and there wasn't and she was crying because she was relieved. Someone please correct me if I am wrong
Yep. Fairly certain it was negative too. The pregnancy test scene was shown b/c her just thinking that she was pregnant made her realize that she was not cut out for that kind of life. (and I guess to refer back to when she told Sun that she too had taken one before) But with the two boxes on it, the test was confusing. It's a shame Kate didn't use a Widmore Labs Pregnancy test so that it clearly would have read NEG!!!
saltspringa 11-09-2006, 02:37 AM Seriously!
When I've done a test, it was the (ahem cough cheaper) brand that just has a line in both boxes
Yeah there are the plus ones too. but i didn't have time to tell if it was that brand.
crying out of relief and realization she isn't cut out to settle down , needs to keep on the run, makes more sense.
Lost In My Mind 11-09-2006, 02:40 AM Apparantly, Kate had a little scare (as in Aunt Flo was a little late) by the way she said she almost had a baby.
I was slightly taken aback by the way she reacted to the negative result. It was almost like disappointment, but also relief...I wonder if deep down, she wanted to be pregant--as in, that would force her to change her life for good. Maybe she really was tired of running.
Weeping_Buddha 11-09-2006, 02:49 AM It was negative. It showed that positive would need the lines to be crossed. Kate had only one line straight.
penyours 11-09-2006, 02:55 AM Yup it was negative, the test said right on it that if it was positive there would be a plus sign.
lostlocke 11-09-2006, 08:47 AM At first I thought she was pregnant because I missed the box so I didn't see what it said, so i thought she was crying because she was pregnant and didn't want to be under the circumstances of her crazy life! Then she said I almost had a baby and I figured she was crying from the relief of not being pregnant. She must have been going crazy until she found out it was negative.
lostgurl 11-09-2006, 09:16 AM I think a lot of people are confused because on the test itself they show the symbols for both positive and negative so the user can compare it with their results. If that's what you were looking at, then I can see how some people are seeing the positive sign. I'm pretty sure the result for her test was a straight line, negative.

RodimusBen 11-09-2006, 09:43 AM Seems like they have really pulled back on the easter eggs for that sort of thing this season.
PhillyGirl2873 11-09-2006, 09:50 AM Definitly negative, but I was confused also, so I went back and watched it with Tivo and it was negative.
pinkrose 11-09-2006, 10:02 AM I was confused at first too. I thought she was pregnant until she said I almost had a baby. Then I realized that the straight lines must mean negative. Aren't there tests where if a line shows up on both sides that it's positive? If there's no line, it's negative? Or does that have to do with the color of the line, pink being pregnant and blue being not pregnant? Obviously I don't have much experience with pregnancy tests.
guinsu 11-09-2006, 12:29 PM It was negative. If it had been positive she could have used it as an excuse to never go to Costa Rica and have to get a passport.
hotncmom 11-09-2006, 12:39 PM Let me clear this up. On a home pregnancy test there are two boxes. One is a "control". If the control box does not get a line in it, the test is not working properly. The other box shows the positive or negative result. The box closest to the + or - (on our left) was the box that determined the result.
Of course, this is confusing for people not familiar with pregnancy tests, so I don't see why they didn't just mock up a test with one box for the purposes of the show so as to avoid confusion.
Lost_In_Louisiana 11-09-2006, 12:44 PM .....and was it a Widmore preg. test?
That's EXACTLY what I was wondering! :w00t:
100%
It was negative. If it had been positive she could have used it as an excuse to never go to Costa Rica and have to get a passport.
Yes, I think that was actually her plan! She was trying to figure out a way to avoid going to Costa Rica so she stopped taking the pill (or whatever she was doing) so that a pregnancy would keep her from going. Once she actually took the test though and it was negative I think she realized it was a crazy plan and she was NOT ready to be a mother.
penyours 11-09-2006, 02:02 PM Yup the test said right on it that a positive would be a plus sign.
Oops I didn't type this properly last night  I meant to say that Kate's test wa negative and that if it was positive we would ahve seena plus sign, just like it was indicated on the test.
wanders01 11-09-2006, 02:38 PM But did Ben tell at breakfast she is pregnant? Or did dear Dr. Juliet impregnate her in the lab? Or was the test she took earlier too soon?;)
I thought it said she was pregnant too, but after watching it a second time, it definitely is negative. I think the reason she is crying is due to realization and overwhelming sorrow that she can't be with the guy she loves, have his children and be together forever because she knows she has to run again. It is definitely a mixture of relief and sorrow.
Margalit 11-09-2006, 03:54 PM I don't see how "I almost had a baby" is analogous to "I had a pregnancy scare." That's ridiculous! I believe everyone who has verified that the test was negative, but i had assumed the test was positive and she had an abortion. THAT is certainly a lot closer to "I almost had a baby" than merely being worried is.
TabbyRasa 11-09-2006, 05:19 PM .....and was it a Widmore preg. test?
It sure looks like it could be...look at the box on the counter.

~ as an aside, until I looked at the screen shot - I didn't notice the 4 bottles of prescription medicine sitting on the counter - wonder whose those are, and what they are for...

Yeah, that definitely looks like a Widmore test to me!
chendel 11-09-2006, 05:37 PM The strange thing is, on the pregnancy test's my wife uses.... two lines means positive. They don't use a "+" sign. The urine wicks up the test and the first line that shows is the control line. Then you wait for a second line. If it shows, then you're pregnant.
The reason I'm so sure about this is with our second child, my wife had to take those tests frequently. And on the last test she took it only showed one line and she got upset, started crying, and threw it away. I told her she didn't wait long enough and I picked it up out of the trash can and went in the other room. Sure enough, a couple of minutes later a VERY faint line showed up and she was in fact pregnant.
I am NOT saying that is the way the test works that Kate had. It obviously shows on the test that it has to have a "+" to be positive. I'm only saying this because there are some tests out there that two lines means positive, it doesn't have to be a "+" sign.

i was going to post the same thing, but then I stopped because I thought I was being too nitpicky. :D
paradox 11-09-2006, 09:43 PM Yes, I think that was actually her plan! Now that makes a lot of sense as to why she would say she "almost had a baby." Good thinking there. Although, I think when she was crying, it wasn't just relief. I think she also felt some regret that she wasn't able to be a mother and have a life with Kevin. There was a sorrow and a loss involved in facing up to that.

thats how my pregnancy tested worked too

I caught that too during the original airing of the episode. Since it's sitting alongside items a woman would use, I believe it belongs to her. The reason for it, I don't know, but I do think Kate used some of the prescription medication to drug her husband with. Remember, she put it into his drink.
